spyinthesky Posted 10 March, 2010 Share Posted 10 March, 2010 Any rumours? Some suggestion there won't be any shirt sponsors but think this may be a misinterpretation based on the possibility of a special anniversary shirt without any advertising. If true this is a shame as there is a warm feeling towards NC and Markus which needs to be built upon not eroded

CWD Posted 10 March, 2010 Share Posted 10 March, 2010 Yeah, NC already stated that "we're minted, flybe can **** off". im not sure if thats his exact words. I'd actually quite like to see us have a charity on the shirt ala barca and villa, maybe not next season with the anniversary, but something like naomi house or some other local charity would be a nice touch. Glasgow_Saint Posted 10 March, 2010 Share Posted 10 March, 2010 I heard that NC had agreed a deal with Thomas Cook and that we were going to have "Going Places" splashed across the shirt. Danny Posted 10 March, 2010 Share Posted 10 March, 2010 It's confirmed that there will be no shirt sponsors next year. That's just on home replica shirts according to the club. There does seem room for the club to have a sponsor on players' shirts as well as away replica shirts. Although I'd be surprised if any firm would be willing to pay too much for shirt sponsorship without home replica shirts being included, which would surely play a huge part in brand awareness. As such, I wouldn't be surprised to see the players' shirts sponsor free too. That's just speculation on my part though, so don't read too much into it. sambosa75 Posted 10 March, 2010 Share Posted 10 March, 2010 My nephew plays in the same academy side as the son of someone involved in the commercial side of things with the club. The guy was talking to my brother in law about next seasons lack of sponsor and basically said Cortese is intent on waiting for as long as it takes in order to secure a proper blue-chip sponsor such as a Samsung, Sony or Vodafone, something of that ilk. He genuinely sees Southampton FC as a desirable brand for someone like that to align themselves with. Good luck to him I say... Don't say the Echo feud as no-one knows the full picture what went on there. Matt, as often happens you have to take a view on information provided. The feedback I have had is that he is a very sharp and intelligent man, which is something the club needs. However he doesn't appear to be keen to forge good relations with staff or business contacts, which is a shame, if true. NC certainly appears to have fallen out with Frannie Benali (on a house rental arrangement), the Echo (rightly or wrongly) a business occupying offices in St Marys and has told a well respected local business man (& Saints fan) that he has no interest in improving relationships with local businesses. With regard to the latter some people may say ..'so what'.. but with 47 Boxes and approx 1,000 Hospitality places to fill to maximise revenue, you would think any senior exec would not want to adopt such a cavalier attitude. Of course most of us don't really mind how the club is run if the playing side is successful. However should the tide turn then the knives get sharpened. FLYBE are restructuring completly all & this includes sponorships & other advertising methods. So the pull out wasn't really a shock. & It's been openly stated I believe by club, that no shirt sponsorship next year. I actually think there's 2 reasons for this, & that when a deal for 2011/12 is done they are hoping a far better deal for Saints as have improved who we are as a club. Badger Posted 11 March, 2010 Share Posted 11 March, 2010 I thought Flybe's decision to cease sponsorship at the end of the existing deal was revealed at some stage during last season. It was said they were dissatisfied with various issues including not being told when the club went into administration. In my view the decision pre-dates Cortese's involvement with the club and it is mischievous to try and pin this on him. As for sponsors,my preference might be Dell Computers. If we must have a name emblazoned accross our shirts 'Dell' at least appears Saints related. I think the point is more Liebherr is pumping a lot of money in to finance the club and isnt willing to associate the club with someone he doesnt believe "becomes" the Southampton FC brand. These people havent bought the club on a whim. They see the genuine potential this club has as a money making entity and the best way for that to start is be aligning ourselves with companies that befit such an image. Not some god-awful airline that sponsor half the clubs in the football league. I really cant see anyones problems with at least attempting the make the Southampton FC shirt a coveted advertising space. Sponsors like we've had previously are ten a penny and certainly not worth agreeing now when we've got over a year before another new sponsor is needed. We are in a position of stength and quite rightly the commercial department of the club are aware of this and aiming to make full use of it. Of course, and assuming they still have a club (which they shouldn't) next season, it would be only right and proper for the phew to give over their shirt sponsorship to the landmine charity as a cathartic act of mea culpa. It is so nice to have a proper sponsor rather than the awful S, which looked like a market job. I wouldn't be surpised if we started getting a continental like Kappa soon It was 5 years with Umbro from when it started in 2008/9, with the intention being to change both home and away kit every season. We've already been spared one home kit change by flybe's decision to extend sponsorship for another season in 2009 (expiring at the end of this season). Prior to that they were going to need a new sponsor for this season. I suspect the need to flog off lots of Umbro stock while we were in administration was behind the original one season kit from becoming for two seasons. Markus can afford to buy it out if he wants, but at the moment Umbro's classic Tailored By... range as used by England and Man City, and broadening to numerous other clubs for 2010/11, fits in with the rumoured classic retro kit perfectly. Other clubs such as palace, fulham & Southend for example have a supply deal with a third party uk distributor which means they get 2-3 year old designs straight out of a nike teamwear range - basically a old pub team kit & leisurewear. I think the umbro relationship is strong & they provide us with quality bespoke kit. They have always been top 3 or 4 manufacturers I world football and with the tailored range many conosiours believe umbro are now producing the best kits.
