Funniest Rumours of summer signings from days gone by

Turkish

Recommended Posts

All these summer rumours made me think of great rumours on here from summers gone by. Particularly amusing ones were Javier De Pedro, some spanish guy that Javi, former poster and all round Spanish nutcase kept banging on we were signing. I also remember us being rumoured on the old saintsforever site to be close to signing Joe Cole, just before he joined Chelsea. Anyone remember the Gaizika Mendieta rumour? Barcelona player signed for £25m or something and we were rumoured on here to be signing for £10m after the cup final, pure internet fabrication but denied by the club in the echo at the time.:lol::lol::lol:

oliver beirhoff rumour always made me smile, i remember the daily echo getting carried away with full back page 'exclusive'

That was a good one, remember a debate on SF about would his wages upset the other players, some people getting really upset about it, i remember one poster saying "if Beattie is p*ssed off that OB is on that money then ask Beattie to get out his world cup winners medals":lol:

IIRC, that deal was actually a genuine possibility. I seem to remember Lowe coming out with something after it all broke down like: "He has to realise that we are not Manchester United and he is not 28 anymore"

I was delighted when we go Uwe Rosler instead

I remember during the Sounness era we were linked with signing Turkilymaz (the Switzerland international) and Pavel Kuka (Czech Republic player) and a Portugese striker who was even in the crowd when we lost 3-1 away at Wimbledon in 96 live on Sky but after seeing that perfomance i think he changed his mind lol

Here is the Bierhoff link

Weren't some people absolutely adamant we had been offered Drogba before he went to Chelski?

or did I dream that

(Sorry phil took me a while to post)

This one was true as well, Drogba before he went to Marseille, for £3m apparantly, malouda was also linked at the same time, also in Strachans autobiography as is the story he wanted to sign Saha and Malbranque from Fulham for £11m but Lowe said he didn't want to make our competitors financially stronger and us financially weaker so wouldn't do the deal.

Absolutely true - which is why GS left as he was not allowed by Lowe to take us to the next level ! Just imagine where we might have been if even half the transfers GS had agreed (not rumoured) had gone through - we would have been much wealthier (due to massive profit on selling these players - sadly would have moved to the mega clubs), and better as we could then afford decent replacements.

Still RL paid the ultimate price for error in judgement - just goes to show how narrow the margin between success and failure in life (not just football) - will the present lot get it right - possibly, hope so, but certainly not guranteed. I would be much happier if ML was personally more involved - fact that he is not means it is not that importnat to him - if it suceeds (what ever his criteria for successs), all well and good, if not what the f*#k it was only £12M and the publicity was more than worth it (assuming he can sell the club to cover the rest of his expenditure, which I am sure is easliy possible).

Lol. A prime example of how a football club can't be run the same as a business.

I think Eboue was also linked but someone at the club didn't like his attitude. Mido was reportedly close to signing too at one point. Oh, and nobody has mentioned Paul Allen.
Paul Allen did sign.......but he dislocated his shoulder in a pre-season friendly and never recovered.

Didn't the Echo report on Lineker sightings around Southampton when he was playing for Grampas 8?

Yes, it was during the time we were managed by Bally and Lawrie was DoF.

Story afterwards was that Lineker had attended a charity function down here where AB and LM were also present. Lawrie replied to the speculation saying that David Gower had also been there so were we going to sign him as well.

I would not be surprised if we tapped "Line-acre" up about returning to the Premiership but he was intent on retiring .

Tore Andre Flo
Didn't he have a trial at the same time as Egil Ostenstad? We were supposed to sign both - cannot remember why Flo fell through but he definitely played in a trial match.

EDIT: I think his club would not release him because they wanted to keep him for some European games

Re bierhoff, yes that was true I spoke to lowe about it - fell through due to personal terms, we tried hard to broker the deal.

I don't think we could agree a fee for flo after the trial.

Have been told by a well known member of this forum that he takes full credit for spreading false stories about lineker!

Always remeber reading Oakley to Rotheram in the bbc gossip colum in 05.

An Newcastle to offer Shearer and money for Beattie. along with all the other silly ones.

That Beattie to Newcastle one seemed to last for years. A uni coursemate used to taunt me with it and was sick when he went to Everton... as was I.

We always used to be linked to Jason Euell too.... and then it happened.
