Greatest Ever Import?

Golac without a shadow of doubt.

I'll exclude KK as an "import" although he was signed from a foreign club. After Golac it would be Michael Svennson.

Ekelund might have been in the running if only he had stayed and fulfilled his potential.Great shame.

Does Niemi really count as an import... we signed him from Hearts... hardly foreign

The question posed was : Simple best player you have seen either signed from foreign club or best foreigner signed

Golac is nearly untouchable except Pahars was so good he would have to run him close. Then Niemi, Michael Svennson, Lundekvam, Berkovic, Kachloul, Tessem and Ostenstad with a special mention for Ekelund. Agree 100% with Badger, he was potentially a superb signing. I was gutted when he got injured. In fact we could have a whole team and damned good it would be as well :D

Niemi

Golac, Claus, Killer, Colleter

Tessem , Ekelund, Berkovic Kachloul

Pahars, Ostenstad

Subs : Grobbelar, A Svennson, Soltvedt, Van Gobbel, Fernandes, Morgan, El Khalej

Would probably end up with Ivan on the right wing and Tessem at right back but never mind !

Oh, Dani Rodrigues was another potentially very good player, shame he broke his ankle twice:(

Biggest disappointments were probably Kanchelskis and Delgado.

golac was a class player his understanding with mick channon for a season or so was amazing i was behind the net at the archers when he scored that goal against wba i ducked when it hit the net brilliant. but for me marian was the greatest foreign player a true legend who gave everything for the cause sad finish to his career here but for me will never be forgotten! my mums favourite aswell and shes been a saints fan 76 years!

For me it has to be Marian. We plucked him from total obscurity and he instantly became a top class premiership player. He had pace, courage, skill, two good feet (was he right or left footed?) and a killer instinct in front of goal. He could light up a game by himself.

Such a shame that it ended so ignominiously.

Pahars was one of the most technically gifted players i've ever seen at Saints - his turning and trickery always caught defenders out. Too young to have seen Golac, but Killer and Claus were a quality CB pairing, a force to be reckoned with. Probably those 3 would be my top picks, although Niemi was absolute quality as well, one of the best keepers in Europe when he was playing for us imo.

It's got to be Golac, steel, class and charisma - I think we paid about £50K for him which is incredible! Like StVince1966 one of my best memories is the absolute net buster he scored against WBA which I was lucky enough to see from the middle right of the Milton. When I got home I couldn't wait to see it again on Match of the Day (we didn't have a video at that point), and in the post match interview Motty asked Lawrie Mac what he thought of the goal he replied "I thought that my right winger had a storming game, the only problem was he should have been playing right back!" - classic! Another favourite was Ivan sorting out Alan Gowling (who looked terrified) after he had decided to spend a first half picking on the pint sized Austin Hayes, no room for bullies on a pitch with Golac.

After Ivan, for sheer joy it has to be Ronnie Ekeland, I shudder to think what we might have done to sides over a full season with him and Le Tissier in the same side!...

Ivan Golac without a doubt. Superb player. Remember the goal he scored against I think WBA, absolute screamer. Think he was the first overseas player to play in a cup final, League Cup vrs Notts Forrest in '79, beat the two agries in Spurs team by a couple of months......

What about the Robledo brothers, (George; 1951 & 52, and Edwardo, 1952) both Chilean-born internationals who played for Newcastle Utd

Bill Perry, left winger for Blackpool in the 'Matthews Final' think he was Australian. and there are bound to be others. !
