Crab Lungs Posted 23 January, 2011 Share Posted 23 January, 2011 Ah, perfect timing as always Lawrie. Yes, you did alot for Southampton, we know that but quite frankly, you've taken and taken some more and whilst you should get "free tickets", I suspect you're not short of a few bob if you really want to see us play. WokingSaint Posted 23 January, 2011 Share Posted 23 January, 2011 Some may have seen my post in the MLT thread. It would not cost the club a fortune to at the very least give LM, MLT, MC and a few others complimentary tickets. We might have a great future but we also have a great past. Lets remember it and treat those that acheived so much with respect. LM is 74 and despite the fact that he did so much he is not allowed in the front door for f*** sake - disgraceful! (and please do not start harping on about what he took from the club - there has never been any evidence that he was paid the vast sums that some have claimed!). um pahars Posted 23 January, 2011 Share Posted 23 January, 2011 I can think of 75,000 reasons why he could afford to buy one himself. Of course he can buy one himself and his presence at SMS this season would suggest he is doing just that, but it is more to do with recognition and honour. Some of course would argue that he is a walking ego who wants to be the centre of attention, whilst others would say we should recognise and honour our greatest ever manager. Once again I struggle to understand why this has to be bleated to in the press (maybe that's the ego side of him coming out), but at the same IMHO time greats such as Lawrie, Matty and a few others should be honoured as front row guests on days like these. It is thanks to our past legends that we have such a great history, in terms of memories if not abundant silverware, and it is thanks to Liebherr and Cortese that we have a future. Someone needs to knock a few heads together.

Would that be like the complimentary tickets Cortese/the club gave McMenemy and others for the JPT Final ? Terry Paine for instance was offered a ticket but couldn't get over from South Africa. I totally agree with what you say about honouring the past and treating those who have gone before with great respect. Nick Holmes and Peter Rodrigues were at the Blackpool Cup game so its not as if the history of the club began the day Markus bought the club. The trouble is when the local paper splashes great headlines about Le Tiss or Lawrie having a go about the Pardew situation etc etc.

John B Posted 23 January, 2011 Share Posted 23 January, 2011 I expect the Daily Mail contacted Lawrie regarding the game against Man U because lets face it in our 125 year history the win in 1976 at Wembley was probably our finest hour. Although Lawrie had further achievements in the subsequent years which will unlikely to be bettered for years to come if he does not feel welcome at the club I don’t think that is a good thing. It is a shame that past present and future cannot be celebrated at our club like it is done so well at many others but that I feel that is down to Cortese. It would have been nice to get the surviving members of the 1976 team to the Man U game which would have got good publicity and perhaps a good feeling within the club and its fanbase Cortese runs the club answers apparently to no one and can do what he wants whether that is good for the club we will see in the next few weeks - I was fairly confident of success this season but I am not so sure with so many away games to come
dronskisaint Posted 23 January, 2011 Share Posted 23 January, 2011 I've got huge respect for Lawrie & the happiness his teams provided in that amazing era. I also agree that legends should get a lifelong club membership that allows them to see any game they wish to...not that they couldn't afford to buy them as our club and the game have made most of them wealthier than most supporters. But...& it's a big but...Lawrie decided his career would be be furthered better elsewhere & in some cases you could argue that it was but my point is that he moved on - voluntarily - nobody shoved & that was his decision. In terms of Saints - we have also moved on...we've had a far bumpier ride than Big L in many ways but we are the only club that he does get welcomed to...Sunderland don't exactly hang out flags when he visits! That welcome from the 2011 version is probably proportionate given 30 odd years have passed- I'll be at the Mayflower for the 125th do partly to see him & wallow in the nostalgia of the era he was part of & I'll always revere him for the part he played in it but in this article he sounds like a slightly sad old grandad whose kids don't come & see him any more despite the fact he took them to Disneyland when they were 12. Just **** off MacMenemy if you can't support the club like everyone else. I guess tht you actually didn't read the article, or perhaps only the bits you wanted to read. If you had you would have read that Lawrie does still support the club, goes to games (presumably pays for tickets) and still chats with fans and so on, and will be watching (on TV) on Saturday. His primary dig was at Lowe, quite rightly. He is not too chuffed about the way he is treated by the current owners, does not really come across as bitter about it, understands it and moves on. Just trying to get a point over, which is perfectly valid, that the current team can learn from the past that it is teamwork and togetherness that can win games against the odds and bring success. All seems perfectly reasonable to me, I didn't read anywhere that he was asking for free tickets, or 10 tickets so his non-Saints supporting mates could attend. Its good to see that papers, even rags like the Mail, recognise the historical significance of Saturday for Saints and lok to get an angle on it, quite refreshing in these days of so-called sports journos who know nothing and think that football did not exist before the Premier League, somewhat like some of our supporters. Some people just enjoy having a pop without really knowing what they are talking about, still I guess its probably about people from different eras, who were probably not around in 76? or even 79? aintforever Posted 23 January, 2011 Share Posted 23 January, 2011 While this is not a big issue I do fail to see SFC's logic behind this airbrushing out of former greats. Surely the 125 thing shows the value of history and traditions within football. Whenever I have been in the corporate at SMS one of the highlights is chatting and having a laugh with ex pros, listening to their stories and opinions on the game. Saints v Man U is on the TV mainly because it's a replay of 1976 - a traditional romantic FA Cup giant killing - surely it would be beneficial for the club to embrace that? Also I expect the current players look at how ex players (people they admire and look up to) are treated - are they part of a club or just commodities to be bought and sold? There's also a PR issue - the media are always in touch with ex pros like Le Tiss, Big Mac, Shearer, Keegan etc, why is it our interests for them to dislike the club? The whole thing is dumb - what exactly does SFC gain though freezing out these people?

Cortese was very clear that the gravy train was ending when the Swiss took over. No free tickets, from the top down is what was said. Personally I'd expect everyone who is there for the day out, as opposed to do something, should pay their own way. The only exception is if the club expect someone to go pitchside to be interviewed etc. then I think there's a case for a free ticket. We are not talking a £24 ticket in the family stand here, this is corporate nosh and comfy cushions. If Lawrie is sat in one of those seats in preference to a paying customer then it is costing us twice, once for the food and champagne he consumes etc. and once for the lost revenue from the unsold ticket. The fact that he is bleating about having to go in a different entrance shows this is not about the football, it's about a sense of entitlement. I do have sympathy with the greats argument, but then you have to draw a line somewhere (eg. should Lowe be entitled to a seat on the 10th anniversary of the move to St Mary's?). Better then, IMHO, to have a blanket rule - no freebies.

Perhaps it's because they are genuinely concerned by the way the club we all love is being run? That's nothing new, Kenny Dalglish had plenty to say about Liverpool in the years he wasn't there. People who are so happy to fawn over NC at every chance, need to bear in mind who gave us the greatest day in the history of the club, and the bed rock for success that was established there after. Lawrie Mac and Matt Le Tissier have done more for this club than any others in the last 40 years and are more than entitled to have there say. Winning the FA Cup , dont think we will see this happen in the next 10 years , signing european player of the year at his peak , never going to happen , finish second in the top flight to Liverpool, never going to happen. He deserves recognition for what he did for us they were great times that we will be hard pushed to ever get back and im only 42 and can remember the day we signed Keegan like it was yesterday, a day i couldnt forget , my dad collected me from to school and told me we had signed him i thought it was a big joke amazing times and memories that never fade . EastleighSoulBoy Posted 23 January, 2011 Share Posted 23 January, 2011 I like what Lawrie brought to the club but he has to move on. He did it once, when Sunderland came calling in 1985 (I know he'd left us 5 days earlier, but pull the other one if you think the events were unconnected). So it was easy to drop us. As quoted in the article, someone at the club has told him that times have moved on. He shouldn't be resurrecting this whenever a suitable opportunity arises. It's cynical muckraking and not befitting his tenure or achievements and the respect we still have for him. Don't diminish that respect Lawrie, drop it now and enjoy the present. I quite agree that the hangers on should be made to pay, but I think you could come up with a list of those who we should happily invite along on these "big" occasions without it running in to much past double figures. Matty should always be welcomed (as should Lawrie IMHO - and yes I know he can be an egotistical blighter at times)and on big FA Cup days I would always be more than happy to give prode of place to any of the Cup winning side. By all means make them sing for their supper i.e. walk and talk in the corporates, pitchside, to the press, down in the Itchen afterwards.
