saintscottofthenortham Posted 7 February, 2011 Share Posted 7 February, 2011 6 or 7 penalties helps though. When everyone was creaming over him last season, I didn't see "oh wait, 13 of them are penalties and they don't count."

I am very constant in this, I always divide goals scored into open play and other.I have even had numerous disputes over this on this very forum. A striker who scores 15 goals from open play cannot be compared to one who scores 7 penalties and 8 from open play. All goals count but individual tallies are doped by penalties. buctootim Posted 7 February, 2011 Share Posted 7 February, 2011 (edited) Mackail-Smith has 14 goals from open play, RL has 6 (I think). If Mackail-Smith took Posh's penalties he'd probably have over 20 goals. Edited 7 February, 2011 by buctootim

Still has to put them away though !! I can see your logic, sort of, but to take it further you can get into which forwards have the bottle to take penalties against ones who dont, and does having the guts to take a penalty make them a better striker than one who bottles it etc etc

Patrick Bateman Posted 7 February, 2011 Share Posted 7 February, 2011 Considering the amoun of goals we've scored, surprised not to see a few more names in this list http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_div_2/top_scorers/default.stm But then, perhaps it's a good thing as it shows we have plenty of goals coming from all different sources!? It also explains why Barnard is not very prolific, he took all the pens for Southend.

paulwantsapint Posted 7 February, 2011 Share Posted 7 February, 2011 I sort of agree over open play & set play goals Rickie as a cf doesn't seem to score many if any from under 2 yards How many of MLT goals came from pens, free kicks, or direct from corners

SouthportSaint Posted 7 February, 2011 Share Posted 7 February, 2011 Not sure that you can 'down grade' goals scored from the spot. The logic would then be to separate out 'tap ins' and deflections. What about when a player has a pen saved but scores from the rebound? Goals are goals. Lambert makes pens look much easier than they are. Which games was it at SMS where we missed 2 pens in the first 10 minutes?
Littlelat17 Posted 7 February, 2011 Share Posted 7 February, 2011 Which games was it at SMS where we missed 2 pens in the first 10 minutes? A couple of seasons ago you mean? McGoldrick and Wotton both had pens saves by Richard Lee wasnt it? so home to Watford?

dubai_phil Posted 7 February, 2011 Share Posted 7 February, 2011 I wasn't aware penalties don't count as goals. Must have a word with FIFA and get them to recheck all those Golden Boot awards. I assume they no longer count towards the result then? Hell L1 leading scorer 2 seasons in a row is in his grasp. I ain't gonna tell him not to make any effort 'cos some Saints fans don't reckon he deserves it 'cos he cheated. The thread is Leading Scorer The penalty debate is for a different thread - who is best striker - very different questions

Saint Samuel Posted 7 February, 2011 Share Posted 7 February, 2011 Its great to have such a prolific penalty taker, was watching the game on Saturday with non Saints fans when Rickie stepped up I could confidently say he would score. I did also say before that Kelvin would save both though, so was only half right.

SaintBobby Posted 8 February, 2011 Share Posted 8 February, 2011 I'm sure I read somewhere that Saints penalty conversion rate was the best of all 92 team since 1992 or something. Rickie has every chance of being top scorer. Hope so I have 50 quid on him at 4/1....

doddisalegend Posted 8 February, 2011 Share Posted 8 February, 2011 We should just get Oxo to run into the oppo box very fast with the ball and then fall over at the slightest touch we should get lots more penos and Lambert would shoot up the table. Penalty and Lambert = goal . It's a shame Lamberts free kick taking has gone done hill this season end of last season it felt like every free kick he took would bring a goal this season he can't seem to put one in. Maybe if we play 4-4-2 with N'guessan and Oxo chucking crosses into the box and Lambert in the box rather than out on the wing we'd see more goals from rickie like we saw against Exeter. Secret Site Agent Posted 9 February, 2011 Share Posted 9 February, 2011 Thing is, it takes a different mind set to be able to take a penalty, compared to scoring in open play. Therefore should penalties not count for more? In open play there are many chances that come a little easier because the goalie is distracted elsewhere and isn't given you his full attention, and he may also be looking for you to pass rather than shoot. In penalties you are stood one to one, you're going to shoot and you have his FULL attention.
Wade Garrett Posted 9 February, 2011 Share Posted 9 February, 2011 He doesn't look the player we signed last season though. I remember his debut, he dominated their defence and looked a real handful. Something is definitely missing from his game at the moment. I'm hoping Lallana's return will spur him on a bit.
