Guly

Turned out to be a pretty good signing then. I thought he was class yesterday and has really come on since the turn of the year. I think he will do a good job in the CCC, always gets in good goalscoring positions and seems to be on the same wavelength as the better players in the team.

Must have ended up with 12 or 13 goals this season, often playing from midfield.

Gotta love Do Prado. He is the very definition of 'surprise and delight.'

At times he looks like a total dogs dinner, then he pops up with something utterly wonderful.

Olé olé olé olé........ Gulllllayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy, Gulllayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

Did we ever call off that Taxi for him?

He took time to settle down and find his feet here, he still has the odd dumb moment, but what a player. We will rely on him next season, one of the few players who can make something out of nothing.

VERY frustrating to sit and watch for a full 90 minutes, but he played well yesterday. I'm still not truly convinced as I've seen him in quite a few away games this season, and not being in the game at all. But when he's on form, he looks a cut above this league and maybe even the NPC. Interested to see how he gets on next season. I think he much rather prefers to play at home when we're on top than when we have to dig in.

I seem to remember several tight games where we have been fumbling around for the key and Guly has come along and picked the lock. The biggest difference Guly has brought to the team is the ability to unlock a stubborn defence, even when we have not been playing at our best.

We have a core of players in Fonte, Lallana, Guly, Oxo and Connolley that will have no trouble cutting it in the Championship and the rest are not that far behind. Guly has issues, but if you just play him about the front with limited defensive responsibilities, he is a gem. If we can bring in 3-4 real quality players, goalie, centre back, midfield and #9, there would be enough fill to get us straight to the Premier.

Guly has been getting better and better ever since he came here, so while he does still need to improve, grow and mature in some areas, if he carries on in the way he has been, we don't have a problem.

I get the feeling he would only be better if he played alongside more talented, athletic and quicker players. Sometimes in midfield he slips through so many through balls which Rickie and Barnard dont get on to. As much as I like Lambert and Barnard it would be interesting to have someone with a quicker speed of thought/better understanding of Guly's game and see if they were able to click with Guly's interplay.

He's not scared to run at his marker with the ball, I love to see that in a striker. I think he'll be a key player for us next season, possibly like this:

-------------LAMBERT-----BARNARD/NEW ST-----

LALLANA-------------GULY---------------CHAMBO

-----------------SCHNEIDERLIN------------------

Quite adventurous - how would you ensure we still won the midfield battle with five attack-minded players?

Morgan was playing quite deep yesterday - almost in front of the back 4.

It's just a possibility, I don't think he's entirely comfortable with playing as an out-and-out striker and prefers to float around in the final third like he did yesterday.

Agree - I guess its a matter of opinion about how many CMs you need - Schneiderlin probably needs a partner but somebody more roving than Hammond (jury's still out on Chaplow who, at times, has seemed ideal for the role but, at others, a bit short).

Also agree that Guly is not an out-and-out striker - nor is he a winger. With Oxo injured, Guly has been played on the right but has been given license to come inside (its taken time for Guly to adjust to the responsibilities and freedoms of the role). Will be interesting to see what happens to Guly when Oxo is back in contention.

NA appears reluctant to play anyone in the hole per se. In part, NA is committed to width; in part, Lambert fills that role by default given his instinct to drop deep. And if anyone was going to have a team built around them, it would probably be Lallana. Again it will be interesting to see what all this means for Guly - out-and-out centre forward (arguably there are better options there, especially if we strengthen in the summer)?

Either way, Guly's an important player for us and we will get more out of him the more the team passes and moves the ball and the more the league is conducive to this kind of football. People have observed how Guly has interchanged well with Connolly since he's come back into the team. Yesterday it was also interesting to see Guly clapping one one of the balls Morgan attempted to ping to him (I don't think I've ever seen Guly clap a pass like that), suggesting Morgan's return will also be beneficial. The unresolved question is simply where and how we play him.

I'm glad that NA plays him on every occasion he is fit. His place is as the motor in the middle of midfield, or "in the hole" if you so will. We must retain width as well, which creates the eternal numbers problem: We have one too many players on the pitch with that kind of formation unless we sacrifice one of the strikers, and that doesn't seem to be something that NA is really prepared to consider. To get the best our of Guly on a consistent basis we need preferably to play 4-2-1-3, allowing us the flexibility which a fundamental 4-3-3 gives.

A continental team close to my heart appointed a new manager last week after 5 consecutive defeats. The first thing he did was to change the half hearted 4-4-1-1/4-4-2to a 4-2-1-3. They won 2-0 yesterday. We need to accept that younger, forward looking managers have given up on 4-4-2, mainly for the flexibility involved and also for relying more and more on playmakers.

This season NA has had to get on with the squad the way it was, but it will be interesting to see were it takes him if he can select a few new signings of quality.

Against better class opposition, as in Manure and Blackpool he looked class. Against some of the cr@p kick and rush bully boys of league 1 he struggled. I can see him being a revelation in the CCC.

his best game by far was away at Dagenham & Redbridge- you couldn't find a more kick and rush side if you tried.

I stood and applauded Guly off the field on Saturday after a fine display - but in all honesty I applauded even louder when AOC came on to replace him.

I see many on here talking about 'class' - now Guly is a certainly a good player (on his day) but Chamberlain is what I call real class.

All just a fans opinion of course.

I know it was only a friendly today but Guly scored a peach from 40 yards today and a nice little finish past Niemi, his workrate has improved no end as well. I think:

-------CORK--MORGAN------

OXO-------GULY----LALLANA

---------LAMBERT----------

Would work very well, with Alex making runs inside as he did a lot yesterday to get onto Rickie and Guly's through balls.

Perhaps it reminded him of training then bearing in mind a most esteemed manager down the coast thinks we play like them

This^^^ at times he looks a class above other times..........not so much. Good player to have in the team although I don't like him on the wing he always looks a bit lost there.
