Saints "best passing team in the league"

"The former-Fulham manager Chris Coleman said, "Southampton passed the

ball around as well as anyone in the league. You can see the Dutch

mentality that has been brought to them by their manager. They play

without fear. For the first 15 minutes at the Ricoh we couldn't

get the ball off them. I admire Southampton for how they try to

play. A lot of the football in this division is physical and

it's all about long balls and second balls, but they're not

like that and for me they are the best passing team in the

league."

Surely even TSW can't turn that one into a negative.....can we....?

Unfortunately the only negative is we don't pass the ball into the goal.

Oh, and we can't defend either :(

Arsenal are the best in the world, but last night showed that there is more to pro. football than just good passing.

That just shows that even at the highest level young players are naive.

Someone should have fouled Jenas rather than let him run 40 yards in the Arsenal half. Clichy should just put his laces through the ball rather than **** about in his own half and Fabregas should have gone for the corner at 4-3 rather than play in Adebayor.

They where superb, easily the better team. It was just those three naive mistakes that cost them imo.

Does passing gain points in the League? No

While its a great complement it does us no good whatsoever. The rules of football are still basically simple. The team that scores the most goals wins. I would be far happier if all the other managers were saying, "Southampton are the best goal scoring team in the league".

If you think thats negative then so be it. It is still better than if they were saying "Southampton are the best at conceding goals in the league". :)

We have an extra player in midfield to most teams which is why we can pass it round in that area and is also why we have **** all in the opposition's box. 'Propaganda football' is i think what WGS called it. Ultimately it achieves **** all unless you are getting players in the box and can produce a final ball.

Its like being the best turned out horse at the national.

No it's not.

It shows our boys have real potential. No-one's pretending it's all going smoothly so far, but i don't see why that's a good reason for this forum to be so ****ing negative about everything.

I'm off to read saintslist on my email. Bit more productive.

shows what most of us thought / knew imo. All we needed was a decent couple players at the back (davies for example) and a striker who knows where the goal is aka Rasiak

Indeed, apart from a specialist right full-back, we had the players at the club at the start of the season, to compliment our ability to pass the ball around. But hey ho, finances had to come first.........apparently.:smt102

Thats very good to read, its nice to know that some fellow professionals respect and admire what Saints are doing even if some of the fans can't see it

Why can't the fans see it? Who are the people who have told us that we are crap at passing the ball? Most of us on here have acknowledged that we are good at passing the ball. Has anybody who has posted on this thread disputed that?

Great at passing the ball, crap at putting it in the net, or defending against rivals' strikers. That is what people say. Argue against that.

Maybe this is Chris Coleman explaining to his own fans , why they did not pick up all 3 points against a team who are in the bottom 3. Obviously makes him look better and justifing why they only got a point...maybe the Coventry fans will swallow that excuse..

Its like being told your a really nice bloke but crap in bed really though isn't it

I was thinking of something very similar.

My analogy was going on a blind date set up by a close friend, only to be met by a big, fat, ugly munter.

The next day you tell your friend the blind date had a lovely personality.

Until the League start awarding points for pretty play or completed passes, methinks we should stick to gaining points the orthodox way (i.e. scoring and winning, or at least drawing).

If we could become moderately successful playing this way it would be fine by me.

I saw enough of our crap over the seasons and while I agree with the comments about Arsenal being brittle, what a wonderful type of football to watch.

When we start invcreasing our win rate (if) then things will look so much better. Of course the fans who delude themselves that we are some super club will not be satisfied. Its time to accept the fact that we are viewed much as we do Cov, Ipswich Norwich Boro etc.We have not for decades been viewed as a rival to Liverpool Man u etc on the pitch.

Easy now Wes, why would you want people to argue with you?

I was just alluding to the fact that lots of posters call the team sh1te and have a pop at just about every player and everyone else they can think of (you don't have to look too far to see that) whereas in reality, without a white knight supporter willing to donate a few millions, we have to make the best of what we have and that is largely down to the development of young players (as opposed to recycling old journeymen). They should have our support. Many of them are very talented but inexperienced and lacking in confidence. That will take time to achieve but will happen quicker with our backing rather than to a backdrop of boos, snipes on the forum (God forbid any of the team should actually read any of this stuff) and negative chanting.

So to hear people from other clubs, professionals not just other supporters, saying how well the team is playing is something to be pleased about - isnt it?

West Brom played good football and got out of this division and this has to be 200% better than last year's Saitns team. Tuesday night's football was sublime at times and we made Cov look pedestrain. We were unlucky and deserved more.

Once we get the new bloke/a fit Svensson in at CB the defence will improve a hell of a lot. Then its just the small question of scoring goals.

I think JP is doing a very good job with little or no resources. He deserves our support as do the team. Grumpy stay away fairweather fans should go and buy Chelsea TV and shut the **** up. .....IMHO.

I think JP is doing a very good job with little or no resources.

The thing is, when he took the job he did have the resourses (Davies, Safri, Saganowski, Rasiak, John etc.) One by one these have been taken away from him by either Lowe, Wilde, Barclay's Bank or by his own decision.

He has replaced some of them with good players like Cork and Schneiderlin but the fundamentable positions at the back and up front remain very weak. A fit Svensson (I wish) would help and I hope Alex Pearce doesn't turn out to be Ian Pierce (but as I said on another thread, IMO another 19 year old is not what we need in the centre of defence). However, plugging the gaps at the back is one thing. I just do not know where the goals are going to come from.

So to hear people from other clubs, professionals not just other supporters, saying how well the team is playing is something to be pleased about - isnt it?

This being a forum, it is entirely appropriate that there are many diverse opinions, so I would encourage argument and debate; pretty dull with everybody agreeing with everything everybody said. If anybody is critical of any player, the more intelligent posters will give a reason for that opinion and that opinion might be challenged by others who do not share it, which is what it is all about. Sometimes there are generalities about sections of the team, such as "our defence is crap", "our strikers couldn't score in a brothel" and I have some sympathy with those generalities and statistically it is evident that we are not scoring enough and at the same time conceding too many.

But I challenge you to find many who would argue that the midfield do not generally play decent passing football. Even on this thread I don't see much argument about our ability to play a good passing game. Having identified where our weaknesses lie, is it surprising that passionate fans will criticise those who they feel are responsible for those attacking or defensive frailties and haven't addressed them sooner (Pearce), or exacerbated them (John)?

To your last sentence, yes, it is always nice to hear people praising aspects of our team, but being a cynic I tend to agree with the opinion that Coleman and other managers who have done that might do so for selfish reasons, possibly as an excuse for not beating us, or more perversely because they realise it doesn't do them any harm should they wish to get a job here in the future.

wonder if Coleman had been into see JP before the game in his room and inhaled some of JP's herbal essences ;)

Best passing side in the league. Is playing long ball really counted as passing? To be fair though Coventry punted it up field just as much as we did!
