Cortese speaking to BBC for first time since leaving Saints

Anyone else think Cortese has lined up a bid for the club? This whole destabilisation campaign in the media since he left, now this interview to get the fans onside and make the fans think he's a better option than the incumbents, and then his knowing smile at the end of the interview. Chances are extremely slim but if takeover talks are in progress, it might explain these player bids that are seemingly on hold, the MP talks that are seemingly on hold, and the silence within the club about the direction the board is taking the club.

I've watched too many conspiracy theory TV dramas....

He in that interview that he will never return to Southampton.

I quite clearly was, but I was belittling it because it's a second rate trophy that only the bottom 48 sides in the league can compete for. A fantastic day out at the time but nothing to hold your hat on as an achievement by a club who have spent the bulk of the last 40 years in the top division and for all but 2 of those years have technically been overqualified to actually enter in the first place.

Ok. So what did it have to do with Pulis?

Staying up in PL year after year because of basically one player is not the biggest of achievements from a clubs point of view imo (no matter what how proud I also felt of it) and personally I thought our football in those yrs 99-04 they were talking about was quite frankly appalling (probably misspelled) and nothing I ever talked widly about with friends and fans of other teams that weren´t watching us week after week.

These last years I think we have had an identity on the pitch and never more than this season and I think the club has got more recognition than ever before which at least gives me a lot of pride to be a fan of the club.

Like I said earlier, if you think the last 5 years were amongst the most successful in our history then fair play. For me it was probably the most fun I've had as a matchgoing fan. In terms of actual historical achievement, not so much. Finishing 7th in the third division and spending three years outside of the top flight while winning the loser's shield equivalent of a cup simply cannot be classed as the pinnacle of what SFC has achieved, as far as I'm concerned.

Depends on what outlook you have on it. I read the discussion as if 2009-14 was an isolated period and then I thought so cause coming in to it 2009 we were a L1 club.

If you expand that and the outlook is for example 2004-14 the answer would be different for obvious reasons.

2009 we were an L1 club and the achievement with back to back promotions (+ the tin pot cup that you´re allowed to participate in because you´re a L1 club) is a bigger task for me than if you´ve been a PL team for 15 yrs and finish something like 13-17th.

Not to mention once in the prem gaining more points and picking up more acclaim and recognition than any of those five seasons.

I wonder IF he is after Aston Villa ?

"I know I will get into running a football club. I can't tell you the details at this moment. I am in Milan because I like Milan,

but everyone who knows me knows I am most interested in the Premier League."

So can we expect to see him back in football soon? "Maybe," he says with a smile. When I suggest he looks like he knows

something, he simply responds "maybe".

Typical Saints fan mentality. At least we'll get the stripes back, thats what REALLY counts.

Finishing 7th in league one is not in the same league as finishing 11th in the premier league :lol:

I doubt Southampton is important enough for that. His connection with the club was probably limited to his involvement with Marcus Liebherr. If so, why would he want to be here now as an alternative to the Liebherr's?

Did you ever hear a single comment from him about the area being a nice place to live in? The world sadly is a much bigger place than Southampton and people such as Cortese like all high rollers are attracted by money, bright lights and glamour. After all everyone is trying to impress or suck up to somebody. More likely his interview was intended as an Epitaph on his time here to draw a final line under his tenure and connections. Ultimately the lure for something better will always be there for those able to make that step through talent or determination. Living in a backwater is for small fish.

If winning that "tin pot trophy" did anything on 2 occasions it has stopped the Chelsea fans signing their bloody Champions of Europe song endlessly at SMS as the repost of "JPT you'll never win that" has left them left them dazed and confused with no reply.

For me having been to 3 Saints Finals, a play-off Final, and the FA Trophy final (the latter 2 as a guest supporter) to finally walk away from Wembley after 30 years of disappointment as a winning supporter makes it a worthy trophy in my eyes.

I don't know whether this got picked up in any of the transfer threads but did anyone notice this part of the original piece on Cortese? http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27492019

"Manchester United have reportedly made a £27m offer for 18-year-old left-back Shaw, while Liverpool remain in talks over a move for captain Lallana, 26.

The Anfield club have also made an enquiry for highly rated central defender Dejan Lovren, while midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, also 24, has attracted interest from a number of Premier League clubs.

However, Southampton are unwilling to sell any of their players."

It's a shame there's no source and it's somewhat contradictory in that "Liverpool remain in talks" and "Southampton are unwilling to sell any of their players" but the second statement is pretty firm without any caveats.

Blimey, the vitriol and disregard for Cortese highlighted in this thread is the most shocking thing.

Okay so he's no longer with us so is open for ridicule but Christ give the guy some credit. People with short memories seem to forget that it was Cortese that bought Markus' attention to us as a viable investment. It was Cortese who implemented the foundations which we are still reaping the benefits today. He wasn't perfect, the spat with Le Tissier was disgusting and by all accounts Cortese was difficult to deal with. Putting those issues to one side... the guy delivered on his plan and then some.

He walked because KL wasn't prepared to fund the project anymore IMO. You will find that many others will leave because of this reason IMO. I wish he was still here and we were still being funded by KL. She sees things differently and I can't say I blame her either. She is not that interested in football and less interested in ****ing away her inheritance on something she has no real interest in. For the life of me I can't se why anyone would invest in football unless you have billions to p*** away.

I personally don't disagree with anything in that short article.

Sorry to take an opposing view to the majority here but I thought it worth a posting just to try and redress the balance.

You don't, really you don't. Most agree with this but there are a few prolific posters (who obviously aren't getting laid and need to! :-)) with agendas who the others can't be a*sed to educate!

Wreaks of insecurity too. Didn't realise it was physiologically possible for a 'dwarf wop' to induce a small penis complex.

Jason's post is good, but if KLs perspective is so at odds with what NCs and her Dad's was, and is so at odds with the fan-base new expectations, why doesnt she simply sell-up, safe in the knowledege that she did her bit and honoured her father's 5 year plan and got us back to the big time ?

How are they at odds with KL' father? Or our fans? That doesn't make sense.

Where's the queue of sensible, yet extremely wealthy investors keen to buy us up and take us to the next level?

Yes, yes. The same b*ll*cks was being said back in 2008 when I was saying administration would be the best thing to ever happen to us.

If anything, we are even MORE attractive to the MLs of this world than we were in 2009. We are back at the top, we have a great infrastructure, and a youth policy the envy of European football.

Yet we are far, far more expensive. We cost £12m in 2009. Right now we would be worth, what? Conservatively at least ten times that?

No, we offered a much better gamble for an initial small outlay for a return than we do now. There aren't tons of people with the right mind-set and finances looking to shell a couple of hundred million pounds.

So, tell us how KL's perspective is so at odds with that of our fans and her late father?

...and absolutely zero potential to be the next Man City. No one is going to buy us to plough hundreds of millions in. They are better off buying one of several other clubs with at least a chance of being a global brand. We ain't and never will.

Face it Alpine. Those unrivalled years of success, those triumphant days of slaying that footballing giant Carlisle United in what could be our finest ever hour for our greatest trophy, that unrivalled season of finishing fourteenth in the Premier League like we had never done before. Face it. It's over. 14th in the Premier League might never happen again. Just a crazy unrivalled dream.

If "the point" is demanding we have an owner spending hundreds of millions of pounds to make us Man City Two, then no I "don't see it".

If that is "the point" for you then I suggest you are supporting the wrong club, sunshine.

Support Man City - they've got, like, loads of money. You'd love them.

I doubt very much that Marcus would have thrown millions into the team and we were always told that we would have to live within our means. I am sure KL will carry on in the same manner as her father. Prudent investment. Where is started to go wrong was when Cortese sanctioned silly money for Osvaldo and Ramirez.
