NickG Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 my view was this month will tell us huge amount; squad gets worse and bad streak continues -running out of time and looking bad squad about same/better and couple of wins in month and will be a lot more optimistic. not rocket science I know but so far LB, CB and CF in, with loan players out -and a win. so far so good..... SaintRobbie Posted 11 January, 2009 Share Posted 11 January, 2009 We lost the game and won the match. Great to see a more sensible line up. Great to see Total Football has seemingly gone out of the window. Chuffed to see a win, but cant help but think we were lucky. We're still going down IMHO, but there is at least a glimmer of hope. St Landrew Posted 11 January, 2009 Share Posted 11 January, 2009 I'm getting tired of saying it, but the present Board will make sure we work towards an operating profit in League 1, then League 2 and so on. But it's not the stuff of football and the fans will eventually disappear. The South Coast is a diverse region with plenty of other interests for those who want something different. And honestly, if things don't change dramatically to an upward direction, I think all but the core[est] of core supporters will end up doing them. We're still not used to being second tier, and we're fast heading for the third.

Agreed but the recruitment of Sajeis is a step in the right direction, I want to see 2-3 more in that mould if we can move one or two of the worse bigger earners on (ie Euell but that's real optimism!). Doncaster is huge now - if we win that brings a few clubs into the struggle. We MUST win a lot our remaining home games now starting next Saturday, if this result is to have any relevance. We could have been cut adrift this week but we haven't been and the lads must cash in, no allowances will be given for age etc. Football is about pressure, we need those clusters of 2-3 wins as Forest are starting to pull away, we need to draw the likes of Blackpool and Barnsley in. Charlton must be pooing themselves, if we and the clubs apart from Donny win and they lose again next week, they are miles adrift and weaker minus the likes of Bouazza. League 1 would be even tougher for them than for us.

I was watching an old MOTD I have, where we beat Liverpool 2-0 at home, and Jonathan Pearce said of Harry Redknapp's side... It's not the Great Escape, it's not even the beginning of the Great Escape. But it's enough to start a Great Escape committee... And we know what became of that season. Well, we're probably at a similar point right now, albeit a division lower, with a smaller chance of succeeding.
Micky Posted 11 January, 2009 Share Posted 11 January, 2009 If we win all of our remaining games we will stay up - no problem. Errrrr but... current form says that aint likely to happen and we will struggle. Win away at Reading, lose at home to Forest. The problem is not consistency though - becuase from what I have seen, we are consistently poor. Even yesterday - we were apparently lucky to come away with the points. If I were a betting man - it would be on us to be relegated. We now need a huge improvement in our home form in order to get out of this mess. It's in our hands - as I said in an earlier thread - time to stop talking a good game and start playing one - consistently.

Under Weststand Posted 11 January, 2009 Share Posted 11 January, 2009 All depends how we do in the next three games I will believe we have a chance to stay up if we get at least 5 points from them. If we lose to Donny & slip back to what has been our general cycle recently of win 1 & lose 2/3 then we will be in deep trouble. I think January will decide our fate IMHO & our ability to change it, results & what happens in the transfer window. It would be good if we were able to bring in a Right back & a forward. Lets just hope for the best.

Mole Posted 11 January, 2009 Share Posted 11 January, 2009 I know i'm anti Lowe Mr Negative but we really were crap yesterday. I know the players are lacking in confidence, but they were all scared of the ball. Lowe would call it one touch football, but it was school boy football. Don't get me wrong they did try and at the end you could see how much they wanted the win but they are just too young and have been unfairly thrown in at the deep end. I really do hope they pull off a miracle and stay up, but i can't see it.

AndyNorthernSaints Posted 12 January, 2009 Share Posted 12 January, 2009 If Saints get in a striker, experienced midfielder who can tackle and pass and another defender i think we might be alright. I'm still worried about the lack of goal threat, the lack of awareness of forward players to make space/runs into the box to score. Although McGoldrick has been better recently i don't think him, Paterson, Saga and BWP will get enough goals, meaning we have to rely on Davis to save us each game. DT Posted 12 January, 2009 Share Posted 12 January, 2009 The downside of the win at the weekend (and probably the only one) is that if Rupert Lowe's little purse was just beginning to open up, with the gravity of our situation at least beginning to dawn on him it has now firmly snapped back shut, leaving us with little in the way of striking capability or indeed back up at CB still and a ball-winning central midfielder. By the way, we need to be safe by the last game because we ain't winning at Forest, who will by then be in contention for a play-off with Davies at the helm (anyone else notice what he said about needing some older heads in? How apposite).
John Smith Posted 12 January, 2009 Share Posted 12 January, 2009 The fans know what it takes to stay up, question is, do the players have it in them to deliver? We are not down yet, but we need to start fighting, scrapping and clawing our way out of this situation. The future is in the teams hands, there's nothing more that anybody else can do (once the window is shut).
ExSt Peter Saint Posted 12 January, 2009 Share Posted 12 January, 2009 I'm not making any predictions, but I don't feel that confident, especially with our attrocious home form. One place above the relegation places would do me right now. I'd take that for our finish at the end of the season if offered it today.

With the side we've got out, 5 away wins is OK although we need to grit out a few more draws like we got at Sheff Utd & Charlton. We need to win Saturday however scrappy, the result is king and we need to win the bulk of our remaining home games.
St Marco Posted 12 January, 2009 Share Posted 12 January, 2009 The CCC is all about little bursts of form, all teams go through it then have a bad patch. The question is will this be just one win or will we return to losing/drawing in our next game? If we win our next game which is a must we will probably be out of the relegation zone going into the game at Norwich. If we win that then we will give us a good chance to scrape away from the bottom 3. However if we lose at Doncaster and they then win their game in hand will leave us adrift in the zone. Which will then make the Norwich game gigantic, lose that and i really can't see us coming back. Even with a win at the weekend we still find ourselves needing a point to move up the table and out of the relegation zone. One thing is for sure next saturday will either be a day were all very happy as we have won against a team below us or complete and utter misery because we lost. I think were win though. I'm still unsure if were survive. I said pre-season we will finish 4th to bottom, the performance on saturday we were very poor but had that luck factor and that is what we need. That is what it was like with Saints teams in day's gone by. So it really is 50/50 for me. The next 2 games will confirm for me if were down or were survive. Sadly important as they are the next 2 games will not tell us if we stay up or go down. Of course as fans we will take the optomistic view, which is why the majority will beleive before every game that we will win [look at the pre match predictons each week]. All the facts this season unfortunately lead me to beleive we will be relegated and if we go in to the last game with it still in our hands i will be surprised. The problem with us is we talk a good game but then we have to play the match and the other team spoils our fantasy [more often than not]
WestSaint Posted 12 January, 2009 Share Posted 12 January, 2009 We are mot winning our home games and if we want to stay up we have to do start winning. We will however make it very difficult for ourselves if we contine to play with only one man up front at home. We need to take take the game to the opposition and need two proper forwards. Scoring at home is a problem which needs to be addressed.

I don't think that it is more acceptable Alps. Doncaster is MASSIVE now, 2 wins in a row would be a move forward and we'd drag a few more teams in the mire. If we can lay our Carrow bogey and get something AND we kept this squad together through the window then I'd start to feel more optimistic. We need more like Saejis - that sort of player prospers at CCC level and helps us keep clean sheets. If we sell Kelvin though, we've had it. I'm not sure all of the above will happen which is true for most of us fans so this is why Doncaster is such a vital barometer.
