Grealish must be an adjective and not a name.

"To greal" - to roll around on the ground whimpering.

Why is there a group of butchers in the stairwell?

In case you really dont know, the stewards used to wear the white coats.

Definitely one of my favourites of all time. The caption for me would be… ”…and stay down you f*cker!”.

What was the story behind the black eye?! (and well done whoever gave him it!).

One of the rumours at the time was that it was Dave Jones’ wife, after Rupert visited their house and told Jones he was suspended.

The explanation given out at the time was that it was a hockey injury from playing at his son's school the week before.

You have no idea how funny that is… (assuming you are taking about who I think).

That is me! 🤣

I don’t have his looks or money, but have certainly been called worse!

BTW I wrote an article for the programme (published in 2 parts) on that match, actually inspired by that photo (which originally appeared on the club website).

Best squad pic ever. Likely our best squad ever too.

Though the team a couple of seasons later was arguably even better… having a decent keeper helped

Put Keegan into the 1983/84 team and we would have done the double. It was a shame that Graham Baker was sacrificed so we could buy Shilton.

Interesting thought. 1983/4 it was a bit of a slump in Oct/Nov as I recall that cost us.

I often wonder how things might have panned out (1981/2) had Lawrie been able to bring Trevor Francis to The Dell as he wanted to at the time.

The frustrating thing is that what cost us that season was the East Midlands. Home defeats to County (who were relegated) and Forest, losing at Leicester in the game replayed after it was abandoned due to the rain and drawing at home to Leicester. Just 4 more points from those games and we would have been champions. But will never forget standing on the open terrace at Notts County on that Thursday evening knowing that I was seeing the greatest team in our history take second place.

Some great photos on this thread - not my photos but these three are up there. The Milton in all its glory mid-70s, some fan playing the last post as the last few walked out of the Archers for the very last time in 2001 and the 7,000 at the San Siro in 2016

One of them in that picture was my grandfather. Ex-Army boxing champion and Southampton docker, a bit of 1960s and 1970s terrace bother wouldn’t have fazed him…

My old man was a docker, as well as my grandad and a couple of uncles, none of them stewards but plenty were. And there was the well known ‘Dockies Gate’.

And while the stewards did don white coats back then it was also a thing for fans to for a while, decorated with your club’s colours. Most famous at the Dell for the butchers coat was, unusually, a Millwall fan ‘deaf Tony’ who regularly stood under the Toomers.

I was under the West Stand with my Dad - was actually terrified by the crush. I wonder how many were actually there that night?

Well I didn't count in the figures, someone managed to pull a Milton Rd exit gate partially of it's rollers right next to where I was queuing. I would guess it was between 10&20% higher than the official maximum capacity.

I reckon there had to 30000+ in there that night… one of the few games I’ve been to when I was actually scared for my safety

I believe the picture of the packed Milton Rd end was taken at Mick Channons Testimonial game v QPR the Monday after we beat Man Utd in the FA Cup Final

Wasnt that before the semi final v Everton at Highbury when he played half fit.

We had enough chances to win that game anyway and would have been favourites to beat Watford in the final.

It was a great final, which we could have and should have won, after a pretty bad first 25 minutes. Even though we did have a goal ruled that should not have been. I drove down from Carlisle and back the same day, as I did for the play off final!

I think the official attendance was just under 30,000 but that's because they had to shut the gates as so many were finding ways of getting in without paying and not clicking through the turnstiles, they lost count! I remember it being 'guesstimated' there were probably around 35,000 rammed in with thousands more locked outside.

That ramped up even more when they opened the gates towards the end of the match to let people leave which very few did but just allowed many more to pile in. That's why fans were spilling over onto the pitch before the final whistle.

I’ve always wondered whether that was the largest crowd ever at The Dell…

It must have been. Although they never posted attendances for the Jehovahs Witness get togethers held there every year.

(was that actually a thing or am I dreaming it?)
