If they do both go (probably for something not far off £35-40m) we'll be bringing in a new first choice player. Potentially, but I am not certain that would happen. We have clearly bought Quarshie to play a decent part and have Edwards and Wood who would both also expect to start at this level. If we were to then sign someone else and relgate them to 4th/5th choice I am sure both would be pushing to leave (and fair enough). Also might still have Taylor who is a cover CB option too. So much change still to happen!
saintant Posted July 28 Posted July 28 Some seem to be overlooking the fact that Captain Jack is a sure fire starter. Ignoring his presence in the squad won't make him go away or prevent him from being one of the first names on the team sheet. 1

S-Clarke Posted July 28 Posted July 28 The media soundbites are out in force on this one aren't they. The media can't dress it up really, we know how this looks. It's an absolutely horrific decision to offer him a new deal, no iffs, no butts. We weren't losing value on a high valued player for free in the summer. We'd have had no takers this summer so we'd have kept him anyway, then let him go next year. I don't see why we've done it. He's not good enough to be the captain and first team starter for a promoted or promotion chasing team. The evidence was there last season and the season before. He might be a nice lad, good around the place - I'm not disputing that, but there's more needed than that alone (As proven by last season). I hoped we'd get ruthless this summer and stop rewarding failure and mediocrity, but alas here we are. 7

I’m still pretty convinced it will have reduced his wages for a fair representation of the squad player status he will likely be over the contract period. I do agree the extension was unnecessary otherwise but that 3rd year is probably to offset those wages being spread out. 2

You'd hope so, maybe we were daft on his initial contract a year or so ago and didn't put a relegation clause in it? I guess that's one way of looking at it, it's a contract renewal to help us financially. But the 3 years still feels too long, however it's painted tbh. 1

Willo of Whiteley Posted July 28 Posted July 28 There is no redeemable proof that he is captain material other than the occasional chatter of him being good around the dressing room. He says he’s grateful for the new deal, probably knowing full well that he doesn’t deserve it and that he’s on probably more per week than what the average person earns in a year for being not very good at his job role. He shouldn’t be a starter and he certainly shouldn’t be captain. 4

Presume you're expecting THB to go for 28.5 - 33.5M now? Good work if we get that.

A central pairing of Quarshie and either Stephens or Wood is pretty horrific even at Championship level.
Andy Hill Posted July 29 Posted July 29 This was a very strange contract extension. It would be good to know the reason why ?! 1

Sunglasses Ron Posted August 9 Posted August 9 Did I spy a cheeky hand to the ear dig at the supporters when he scored? Can’t blame him if so. 4
gio1saints Posted August 9 Posted August 9 Took a lot of stick slagged off everywhere he goes. 95th minute winner. Goal saving tackles first match of season when everyone was looking at him and expecting to see failure. Mark of the man. Respect it. 🙌 5 1

Think he held up the captain's armband as some sort of gesture of defiance though he should realise he owes the fans plenty and this game doesn't automatically wipe out all the mistakes he's made in the past. Couldn't fault him today so that's the standard he needs to maintain allowing for the odd blemish. 1
sfc4prem Posted August 9 Posted August 9 Exactly the sort of response you want from a player after continued fan criticism. Let's see him continue in the same vein. 3
Andrew Watson Posted August 9 Posted August 9 He did well today, needs it to be every week as captain.
S-Clarke Posted August 9 Posted August 9 Can't fault him today, he delivered. Covered for the roaming and confused Edwards quite a few times.

Edmonton Saint Posted Monday at 23:06 Posted Monday at 23:06 For a guy who had his contract renewed due to his so called leadership, is it pertinent to ask where is this leadership? Second worst premier league team of all time, to being rooted at the wrong end of the championship , where we are conceding goals left , right, and centre in what seems to be a badly organized and shambolic defensive structure . Not to mention being bullied each week by whatever journeyman striker our opponents have. Again I’ll ask where is this leadership ? If you ask me, renewing his contract so early in the summer was rewarding failure and as a club we accepted that mediocrity is ok. 11
Saint Fan CaM Posted Monday at 23:12 Posted Monday at 23:12 Agreed…how he has managed to retain his position in the first team, let alone be Captain is reflective of the predicament the club finds itself in. Steeped in mediocrity.

AlexLaw76 Posted Tuesday at 07:13 Posted Tuesday at 07:13 What was said at the fans forum, the decision to (needlessly) extend his contract sits with Spors incredible, absolutely incredible. It was bad enough when Martin talked down to a fan to dared question the abilities of Bazunu, but this is a whole new level of shit. As someone mentioned on here, just waiting out for the Bazunu contract extension!!!
saintant Posted Tuesday at 07:35 Posted Tuesday at 07:35 As this guy manages to continue to be an automatic pick and gets a 3 year extension on his contract our recruitment team are signing the wrong centre backs. Simple as that. 1

ant Posted Tuesday at 07:53 Posted Tuesday at 07:53 Exhausted with hearing how 'dedicated' the long-term inept are, such as Stephens. How much they care. How they'll (supposedly) put right past wrongs. I've sacrificed a lot following this club; I'll do so until my last breath. Where's my plum playing contract, and how do I get rewarded no matter how poorly I play? 1
