Petard~from the middle French word pétard, homorously derives from péter—meaning “to break wind” or fart.

Who knew Peter meant that?

anyway …we fell on our own fart!

"Hoist with his own petard" is a quote from Hamlet. In this instance a Petard is a small explosive device, a type of bomb. The name ultimately derives from the French for fart, as you have said.

It's classic Shakespeare innit? Bawdy word play hidden in an otherwise serious speech. I bet he guffawed to himself when he wrote that. Bill loved his fart jokes, (and willy, fanny, bum and even 'Yo Mamma' jokes), but Hamlet really does mean, in the context of the play 'small bomb' (as he plots revenge on Claudius) and he means 'hoisted' in the sense of to get blown UP...

...See, Shakespeare also understood the physics of explosive devices and they blow you up and away ('hoist').

Hence my questioning the phrase as written by Egg; by falling on our own petard, I wondered if he was suggesting some act of self sacrifice, where we purposely jump on the bomb we laid. Perhaps not, but, as a wannabe cunning linguist myself, I immediately wondered if it was a purposeful bit of idiom blending - or, as they are otherwise known, an "eggcorn".

*Thanks for your consideration and time in this matter.*

Michael Stipe of REM fame loved this phrase. He was initially told that it meant that you like the smell of your own farts. Hopefully someone put him right. I can confirm that it means being blown up by your own bomb (used to blow in doors or walls in medieval times).

His "I didn't realise it was against the rules" routine is not going to hold up that well. Especially if that implies he was doing it at Barnsley for two years.

We just need the ban to be matches not months.

No. We need there to be no ban or, at worst, a suspended ban. The club has been punished already out of all proportion to the offence. Tonda has been punished, presumably, by not getting his promotion bonus or Premier League wage deal. Give him a telling off and we can all move on.

Dragan might have made a cock up not at least putting him on gardening leave pending the FA outcome.

Well, yeah, it would have sent a small message of remorse /contrition. Gesture politics but our current gesture of "fuck you" might not be that effective either.

Our new legal team might though.

It's just taken the FA eight weeks to interview the accused then, no rush.

I'm guessing the whole case must have stalled when Gibson went on holiday after his Wembley breakdown.

Any further disruption to the start of the season is really not welcome - the FA are sp slow because they’re knee deep in shite themselves, particularly when it comes to dealing with the likes of,Man City. I really hope Solak has the balls to take legal action if they’re too harsh on Eckhert given the punishment already dished out by the EFL.

Hah, the myth of "legal action" once again. When you break the rules, and that is undisputed in this case, you accept the punishment. There is no legal action, just plea bargaining at the time of the hearing.

We didn't break any FA rules.

Misconduct. Same as most other cases that end up in the FA disciplinary basket.

Unless they go for the bringing the game into disrepute avenue.

Misconduct will get him a fine and a short'ish ban, suspended perhaps. The other charge will get him 10 games or more.

Bringing the game into disrepute, misconduct. As I've said before, the thing that the FA will be most interested in (not saying it's right but because they are woke) is the allegation of bullying.

I see that we've been up on at least 2 other FA disciplinary actions for June. Both involving the U21S. Player sent off refusing to leave the pitch and some sort of kerfuffle against Leeds U21.

Well, if it’s a long ban, it looks like John Yems should be available if we need an interim 👍🏿

Something I didn't know. Eckert has already been suspended by the FA in the past for something involved with a Barnsley Stoke game 5 years ago.

So a repeat offender, not for the same thing perhaps.

Yeah, he got that for looking at the Stoke bench a bit funny.  Clearly the FA weren't aware that he always looks like that.

Touchline dust-up apparently. Both Barnsley coaches got bans. Stoke's got fines.

Repeat offenders get ankle tagged. At least Middlesbrough will now know the whereabouts of Tonda and if anywhere near thier training ground.

Is this behaviour defined anywhere, or is it at the whim of the commission and/or Steve Gibson?

Totally agree.

I would be laying it on pretty thick that we are still considering legal action against the EFL for the potential loss of hundreds of millions of pounds (and genuinely feel we would win this case) and then be reminding the FA of Tonda's double jeopardy. Don't even know if a touchline ban is acceptable.

The Boro board don't meet until next week so the FA will presumably get their guidance after that.

In the meantime, just to cheer myself up I'm going to watch the climax of the play-off final again with the Radio Tees commentary...

Oooooh, the defenders stand off because they're all grossly unfit, here comes a cross, it's okay, flappy the keeper has got that covered....shit, there goes the whole fucking season.....it's not fair, we demand a replay, best of three? 😄

Dom Shaw outdoes Neil Factless Allen and Sam Fishyface on the cunt scale x10. As for that Radio Tees presenter who called our fans scum…

I think its make it up as you go along.

Influencing factors likely to be, nature and size of those charged, and media furore that could follow .  Saints or smaller well hit 'em hard make an example of them , Chelsea/Man City ... 'well we thought we'd impose a token fine, just to send a message out and being seen to be doing the right thing... if that's alright with you that is.... although on reflection we could reduce it a tad ...'

No substance to this but just a fleeting thought:

Bringing this back to Tonda, rather than the charge, I see reports talking about Klopp taking the Germany job. Am hoping that he does not see Tonda as the bright young coach to work alongside him (ie do most of the work whilst Klopp does the media rounds).  He might have considered Rohl but Klopp has placed him at Salzburg.

If we stand by TE through all of this... he better sign a long contract.

This event has hardly put the game into disrepute. It was a Peeping Tom in the bushes. It simply made great content for all journo's and washed up comedians.

Klopp would probably go for one of his trusty sidekicks.. Big job, not to be tarted about with at first.

This is probably the truth of the matter, and for me it is insignificant by comparison to trying throw a bung at officials, or seeking opposition to throw a match.

Unfortunately though it gives the FA the opportunity- especially with some media interest - to make a big posturing stance.

FA Disciplinary regulations on Misconduct would suggest otherwise. If you fancy going through the 115 page document to satisfy yourself that it's all made up as they go along be my guest.

This interview is a complete waste of time. Tonda could submit a planning application for extension to his home and FA would even notice, doubt they read or listen to anything.  EFL, FA they have already decided and made thier mind up in a few seconds. Just get on with announcing what's been decided. EFL and FA complete waste of space and incompetent.

A reserve goalkeeper walking out into the centre circle and taking a massive dump in it is probably not "defined anywhere" but that doesn't mean its not misconduct or bringing the game into disrepute.

I think it would be good to stop pretending that spying is some transgression that only applies to the EFL because they wrote a rule about it. It doesn't mean that unit legal or fine anywhere and everywhere else.

If the FA want to punish then they can.

I’ll bow to your knowledge of the regulations, but out of interest does it go so far as to the penalties or measures that might be imposed for particular breaches ?
