Two pretty big unallocated shirt numbers.

To pass the time.

Who'll get the 7 and 8 numbers this season?

Posted

The Charles replacement will take the 8, Scienza might move to 7 if there’s clarity on his future unless there’s an attachment to 13 I’m unaware of

Something to do with a birthday - his or his Dad or something. Can't quite remember.

Ah yeah, he was born on Sept 13th so he chose that number when he arrived

Slightly worryingly, I don't think Scienza hasn't looked particularly happy in any of the preseason footage so far? Considering he is also one of our star players and the fans' favourite, I'd say coverage has been fairly Spartan of him to date. Could be reading into it too much, but when combined with the news of potential moves to Italy / prem / Brazil (I.e. no smoke without fire) it's not clear that he'll be here come October.

Edit... Saying all that, it's surely a good sign that Jander and Leo are 8 and 7? You would like to think they will both be here come October now!

Hopefully that’s an indication that Leo and Jander are staying.

Big indication we want to keep them sure, but it probably means nothing in the scheme of things. Hope I'm wrong as we keep both, we have a bloody good chance of autos.

Yeah, what it tells us is that the club are planning for them to stay, and the players have not indicated that they are desperate for a move.

Nothing is certain, but this is about as good of an indication we will get.

Yep. Could still go but you'd imagine that anyone coming in would replace them so hopefully would be of a similar quality. At least shows there's a chance of keeping them.

Charles not getting a new number is telling.

Charles won’t be here I think that’s fairly obvious. The club are waiting to get the valuation they want and he will go.

If the choice is keep Charles or keep Jander then for me it’s an easy choice. Jander has a much higher ceiling.

Surely (surely) the club wouldn't be making hay with that mlt shirt picture if they weren't confident in him staying? Tbf though I remember being burnt by the old saints fc calendar one year when half the players in it had left by the start of the season so no guarantees.

Think Charles will be off, he's got decent value and he doesnt get in our best XI...plenty of teams keen too. Guessing he's refused new contracts too.

Sure he'll develop into a very decent prem player, but we dont need that right now.

Scienza 7

Jander 8

Hope they’re able to live up to the challenge of taking those numbers over from Joe Aribo and Will Smallbone

His transfer value to us is probably higher than his value to us as a player. As you say he's not a guaranteed starter and close to 30 million may mean we have made enough money from sales once Archer, bbd, the Japanese full back I can't remember the name of etc.

Weird isn’t it. Good enough for a big bid from multiple premier league clubs but probably not a starter for us.

Goes to show our strength in depth in that position. I think Downes at the top of his game is our best midfielder and I think Jander was showing at points that he was a better performer than Charles. Charles is a moments player though no doubt and has real personality on the pitch which we will miss. No doubt we will bring in a replacement of some kind though.

That's because it's a myth. I posted stats on here somewhere that showed he started the vast majority of the games he was available for last season (he missed 15? due to injury). He's more than good enough for us, as is Jander. The Club are holding out for at least £30m but we'd be better off keeping him and it appears he isn't pushing to leave.

His nasty injury and his time working back to match fitness have been overlooked by many. I think he’ll be a very good premier league player.

His agent clearly is. Leaking every rejected bid to the media.

He is good enough I don’t think anyone is suggesting otherwise. Also stats don’t tell the full story.

Your original stats were incorrect. He started 21 league games and was sub in 10.

In our final 10 league games of the a season, he started 6 times. That was when he was largely over his injury.

Over the season, started in approximately 2 in 3 games he played in. Missed 15 league games largely due to injury.

I like Charles a lot. But there’s nothing wrong with saying that by the end of the season, him Jander and Downes were pretty much a rotating three between two positions. Bragg also to a lesser extent. I’d prefer to keep Charles, but the idea that he started almost every game he played is off beam.

Charles wants to leave and he only has 1 (2) years left on his contract.

I also like him a lot but we've got to be realistic. If we can hold out for £25m plus £5m add ons then that's a decent deal for us.

Of course he's good enough for us. No one has ever claimed otherwise.

Hey, that number 7 shirt also belonged to Tomasz Hajto and Andrei Kanchelskis, have some respect for those greats.

As reported in the Belfast Telegraph after N Ireland's last international.

From what I recall he said something along the lines of he was looking forward to getting back to Staplewood for pre-season training.
