eelpie Posted 21 April, 2009 Share Posted 21 April, 2009 Unless the FL have decided in advance of the Inquiry they have set up to re-write the Rule Book and throw even more points deductions at us, like they did to Luton, and relegate us three leagues. Nothing would surprise me from the FL ******s.
Frank's cousin Posted 21 April, 2009 Share Posted 21 April, 2009 (edited) Quite vbelievable if we had indeed committed financial irregularities a la Luton etc - but we have not - everything has been avbove board - we just ran out of money after not being able to off load high wage earners quickly enough as gates receipts fell - lest we forget the mast majority of our debt is not over indulgence on players and wages - but infrastructure - money loaned when in the prem and easily serviceable - no one has done anything dodgy, we are just symptomatic of many clubs who have spent a long time in a division where the entire club infrastructure and cost base was based on Premiership income, not being able to adjust in time to a massive reduction on relegation. ;-) the only point of contention on this would be if asked why we spent 7.5 mil under wilde (which Mr Crouch did NOT veto as FC Chairman at the time) - when we knew it was gamble that if it failed would though us into turmoil? No financial irregularities, but financial difficulties will get the job done. If we fail to fufill our fixtures for this season, Blue Square here we come, something even Crouch has just realised. I don't think that will happen, but it is a distinct possibility.

OldNick Posted 21 April, 2009 Share Posted 21 April, 2009 This is the important bit though. Without that gamble would we have a £6m overdraft? The very same overdraft that ultimately bought us down.It was a gamble and was IMO a major part in where we find ourselves today. I agree with Umps stance that it was due to our relegation that is why where we are but from my standpoint, you react to the current conditions, we had gone down due to a catelogue of errors by RL /squad/managers but when the decision was made to spin the wheel the people in charge knew the financial problems we were up against and the consequences if it went wrong. In a funny kind of way RL has been made a mug of by MW and the rest as he came back and will forever be the one who most will point thir finger at and the people who did the reclkless mistakes IMO can sit back and let RL take the flak. The9 Posted 21 April, 2009 Share Posted 21 April, 2009 As the Blue Sq Prem is the highest league below the Football League's auspices it's perfectly possible that general enquiries have been made in the unlikely event that there's a need to turf a club out. We won't get booted 2/3 divisions for "financial irregularities" even if they found them, no-one ever has been and even Swindon only ended up going down one division in 1990 when they got caught - but they might be checking if a club kicked out for failing to fulfil its fixtures, or a club following on from Saints but a separate entity, was able to be admitted to the top level of non-League, just in case... I seem to recall in the dying throes of Newport County 1912-89 there was a similar discussion with the Conference (where Newport had just failed to complete a season), and the erstwhile Chairman of the bankrupt (and groundless) old club claimed they had been accepted into the Isthmian League Premier (then one League below the Conference) for 1989/90, while the "replacement" Newport AFC club joined the Hellenic League which fed the regional section of the Southern League. Needless to say the Chairman who presided over the death of the original club failed to produce a team at all the following season. When it comes down to it, all clubs are members of the League, and if they can't keep you because you've broken the rules, but liked having you around and want you back, it makes sense for them to check you can be dumped as near as possible to the top of the pyramid. Ken Tone Posted 21 April, 2009 Share Posted 21 April, 2009 This just goes to show how desperate football fans will clutch at any rumour straw. With chester about to go down to the Blue Square, their fans will hope against hope for any way the club might avoid it. We're just the latest straw that some bright spark has thought of. Kenilworthy Posted 22 April, 2009 Share Posted 22 April, 2009 Probably half this story is true at least. If Saints fold it would leave league one short of a club. So I guess one of the clubs in the current relegation places won't go down. That would leave league two short of a club - that would probably mean Chester won't go down. So it seems entirely possible that the league might be thinking ahead and asking the Blue Square how they would deal with having one less club? Now I guess it is possible that would leave a slot for a reformed Southampton. But that would be very kind to us when we could reasonably expect to have to start from the bottom. But there is not a great deal of precedent since I think the last league club to fold was Maidstone in 92. And I am not sure if a club outside the bottom division has ever folded in living memory.
