Bean counter rumour

Disclaimer: I have never posted any rumours before nor do I claim to be ITK.

However.......

A friend of a friend was auditing an accountancy firm in Southampton this week.

He got chatting to an accountant who told him he was involved in the current situation at SFC.

Here are the main points of what was said:

A deal is 99% done with English bidders.

These bidders were the first to complete the due dilligence process.

They have pre-approved to sell Surman to Reading in the summer for £700k.

There could be an announcement this Saturday.

That's it.

Yes £700000 seems realistic to me

Hope the rest is true

The way Surman's been playing of late i would say £700k aint too bad, Coppell must be blind.

Can't disagree with that but Surman was born locally, went to Bitterne Park school and loves Saints. He has the potential to be a Premiership player and the potential to become as loyal as MLT. I just hope he wants to go because if not, and we are letting him go cheap, it does not say much for any youngster wanting to come here.

Sounds very feasible to me.

One consortium did seem hot of the blocks in get due diligence done. They probably spent a fair amount to do this & could well be ready to do a deal.

Interesting to hear the Surman sale mentioned. Fry said he was working on a contingency plan in case a deal didn't happen soon. Now we know what that was. £700K would give him a few more weeks to sell the club. Good news either way.

He's had the chance to leave before and never wanted to. I hope if he does go that he goes on to better things, Reading is still local enough for him to stay living here.

Don't think Drew wants to play in L1 and we haven't got the best out of him since promising seasons in 05/06 (when he broke through) and 06/07. With the exception of some bright games at the start of this season, he's been dreadful the last 2 years and has looked under-developed on his upper body - hence always being outmuscled in games - and not fit enough. Reminds me of when Souness and then later WGS sorted out Oakley who in his younger days had a tendency to skip breakfast and not train properly. Don't think you'd find Oakley doing that now but I think Coppell would instill the right habits in drew at a real professional football environment at Reading with proper coaching and not the tinpot joke we've become.

would tie in with the daily echo reporting the jersey lot are not being taken seriously as they haven't bothered with DD. Still 700K when there was talk of 1.5M last summer is hard to take but suppose we can't bargain all that much. Stick in the 500K that Swansea will eventually agree to pay for Dyer and thats surely enough to keep us going till June 30th when all the big wages leave

Is a shame though as he genuinely has a go and his shooting seemed to be getting better - but you can understand he wants to get to the Prem. Anyway we'll still have Pulis...................

Watch him go there and suddenly become amazing

He certainly has the ability but not enough pace to play wide, I think Coppell would beef him up, get him properly CCC/PL fit and put him in the centre where he could thrive and he knows where the goal is too. Right manager to get the best of Drew IMO, sad that he won't be doing it here but ho hum. No criticism of Drew here by the way but just reflecting that we haven't got the best out of our players for many years which is a shame as it's something Saints used to do very well.

I'd hardly say Johannesburg was local ! I'd be disappointed to only get £700k for Surman. I think he's worth at least £1m, even in the current financial climate.

Surman is alright when it's going well and his team are 2 nil up and cruising.

But when we're 2 nil down and we look to him to take the game by the scruff of the neck and show some bllocks, he's nowhere to be seen.

700k is realistic.

Yeah, totally agree

I think some fans are blinded by the fact he is local & perhaps know him personally.

I've been really disappointed in him for at least 18 months now

The English element of the post would rule out GS? Or do you think they meant British?

Despite the fact that Surman is a local lad and a Saints fan, there comes a time when he needs to put his career ahead of his support for our club. If he wants to develop and improve as a player, then realistically he needs to be playing at a higher level than League One. Add to that the fact that we're in desperate need of money, then it seems almost inevitable that he will eventually leave.

Reading are interested in him, of that I'm sure, and I have no doubt that Surman would excel under Coppell. People who criticise him on here really confuse me. He's proven in recent years that he's a good player with bags of potential, and I believe he'd start to realise that potential at a decent club such as Reading. In fairness to Drew, he's been playing in a poor side who arguably have been severly mis-managed in recent times. Whatever happens, I wish Surman all the best, and I look forward to him proving a large number of doubters on here wrong.

I think you'll find it was St Marys, (possibly preceded by a short time at Weston Park), and he is Saints through and through, we were the only club he wanted to play for.

However he's ready to go and I can't believe the number of people on this site who have been giving him stick. The lad has been d-cked about something chronic and I reckon that the form of most players, under the same circumstances, would suffer. Maybe that's why we are where we are.

I for one wouldn't blame him for wanting away and I believe he will regain his enthusiasm and prove all doubters, on this forum, wrong.

Lets knock our own. he is a decent lad and has had the misfortune to be in a team that has underperformed for 2 seasons or more.Whilst he is not my favourite player i do appreciate he does try.A change of scenery at a club that is successful will bring him back on track.

Good luck Andrew and I hope you make the grade

He's a good lad who must have wanted to save us as much as we did, so no doubt took relegation badly as a result.

Sadly he struggled in a crap team, but £700K is a fair price that could be vital to our survival - a good farewell present for a loyal player as he goes on to better things.

We don't want to lose all the youngsters but let's be realistic, there isn't a lot of value in that team, and we need to prepare for future life in anything from League One to the Conference depending on further penalties.

And if The Sun reckon they can get two bigs ones for him, we should be getting them to sell our players before it all goes tits up.

Surman is one of those players who needs better players around him than he has had. I fully expect him to flourish....this site is so unbelievably negative at times its unreal.....

Just a bit concerned that the potential new owners have already pre approved flogging Surman to reading.... It will be interested to see how much money they have to bring in to strengthen the squad if the rumour is right.

Perhaps I'm getting a bit cynical in my old age - but I think Surman is one of the few squad players I would have kept - a season in L1 might not do him too much harm or at least try to keep him until Xmas. Anyway lets wait and see what happens.

No, Walcott has always clearly been class. Kelvin has proved a lot of people wrong. But Surman is average and has never done anything to suggest otherwise. He's been around long enough now.

Which, in a below average team, wasn't bad.

When's he shown premiership potential?

And as loyal as MLT? So Surman is going to single handedly keep a club in the top flight year after year, score 200 goals and turn down moves to the likes of chelsea, spurs, liverpool??

I knew there was a reason I don't post very often

For revealing what?

No specifics, no names and the Surman deal is widely reported in the media.

Besides, I changed a couple of details to cover his ass.

But thanks for your concerns.

I'm sure there are teams of legal types trawling this forum to track down loose lipped bean counters! :D

BTW Great first post. Welcome to our forum.
