SNSUN Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 First choice IMO is: Davis Murty Trotman Jahdi Harding Waigo Hammond Morgan Mills Lallana Lambert with a pretty good second team of Bart James Thomas Perry Molyneaux Mellis Wotton Gillett Holmes Saga Patterson ...and you still have a couple of extras like Gobern and Lancashire and White and Thomson. Looks pretty good - the only changes I'd to the above is trying to stick James and Saga into the first team!

NickG Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 Davis Murty Trotman Jaidi Harding N'dayie Hammond James Holmes Saga Lambert something strange is going on Alpine - yet again I totally agree. Think the James spot will go to the form player of James/Gillett and Schneiderlin. James deserves is currently. Schneiderlin I believe has more ability but needs to show more - maybe odd games/sub appearances etc for first half of season.

JibMcdo Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 ---------------Davis Murty-----Jaidi-----Trottman----Harding ----------James----Hammond Waigo---------Lallana------------Mills --------------Lambert If Mellis or Morgan start playing well than put him in for James. ExSt Peter Saint Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 Potentially the best team could be: -------------Kelvin Murty----Jaidi-----Trotters-----Harding Papa---Hammond--Morgan------Mills ---------Saga---Lambert But Lallana has talent, so do James and Mellis, who Pardew seems to like, so if Saga's attitude isn't right, we could either use Papa there or put Lallana as a more attacking player. Ditto with Morgan and James/Mellis to replace if he's not doing it. Some good options, though, I reckon now. I haven't seen Hammond and don't know how good the defensive side of his game is. If he can sit, then put someone more creative and attacking alongside. There are few weak points on paper at the moment if all those players are fit. Saga Bench: Perry, Spider, Mellis, Bart, Paterson, Wotton Yup. I see this as our probable starting line-up vs the U's on Saturday. It looks well balanced too. Lallana is improving with every game on the left and starting to offer width as well as the tricks to get him inside his marker. My only concern is Thomas as right back, but he's done it before and we have few options. We shouldn't bolt James back there, just because of an injury, as he is far more effective in midfield. Excited to see Papa's pace, hope we get the permits for Saturday for him and Jaidi! :-D

derry Posted 3 September, 2009 Share Posted 3 September, 2009 I think Schneiderlin is the best and most incisive passer of the ball we have got. Up to now he has been completely negated by the lack of players wide so his only targets were clustered in the middle of the pitch. I would play a back four of Thomas, Jaidi, Trotman and Harding, a central midfield of Hammond and Schneiderlin with Waigo out wide right and Mills/Holmes wide left with Lambert and Saganowski to battle it out up front. That would leave the option of Lallana coming on for the last third up front/wide to get at the defenders with fresh legs.

Brussels Saint Posted 3 September, 2009 Share Posted 3 September, 2009 (edited) Personally I think the Saga/Gradel loan exchange is still on and Papa was bought here as a striker (Quote from AP "He's a quick, creative forward player who will help us score more goals and I can't wait to see him in a Saints shirt."). Also if you play one natural wide player the other side does not need such width and can accomodate a lallana type. If the Saga/Gradel exchange does happen I would go with: Davis Murty(Thomas), Trottman, Jaidi, Harding Gradel, Schneiderlin, Hammond, Lallana Papa, Lambert If it does not happen I suspect AP might go with Mellis on the right. That is a myth that width is one sided. To pull the defenders apart there has to be a player/s on one touchline with at least one player initially wide coming in on the blind side behind the back defender. Proper width is using the whole width of the pitch to create gaps. If a one sided winger is employed it allows the defence to compact and push over to meet the threat without worrying about being outnumbered on the blind side. The midfielders drop off and we get exactly what we have at the moment.

Matthew Le God Posted 3 September, 2009 Share Posted 3 September, 2009 That is 442. No it is 4231 which is a very different style of play to how we have been playing so far this season in a conventional 442.

J Bizzle Posted 3 September, 2009 Share Posted 3 September, 2009 No it is 4231 which is a very different style of play to how we have been playing so far this season in a conventional 442. No, it's 4 at the back, 2 centre midfielders, 2 wide men (which drawn on a football chart are normally set slightly forward to the centre mids) and Lallana playing as a striker off the Centre forward Lambert. Forwards never play 2 up top, one is always dropping and the other is pushing forward.

CWD Posted 3 September, 2009 Share Posted 3 September, 2009 I think AP should have a go with this, perhaps in the JPT to try it: ------------------Davis-------------------- Murty------Jaidi-------Trotman------Harding -------Schniederlin----Hammond------------ Papa------------Lallana------------Holmes/(Saga?) ----------------Lambert------------------- IMO this is a top six CCC team, esp with the likes of Fish, James etc on the bench

The difference is provided in the balance between an atypical winger, byline/cross type with a creative player who can come in from the wing when needed. True both midfield wide players need to maintain their width, but I quite like having one of each type in a team.
