First away match

Love to know who went to the earliest away match on this forum.

My first away game was Stamford Bridge, Boxing Day 1969 - we lost 3-0!

Anyone used to go away in the 50s or even 40s. My dad went to quite a few in the mid to late 50s.

Their can't be anyone still alive who went to away games pre-war can there?

26.12.70 - Boxing Day. Arsenal away. White pitch, blue lines, orange ball. Constant Arsenal pressure with Eric Martin a hero and Hughie Fisher nearly nicking it for us. 0-0.

I was there - the most one sided game I ever saw!

How did Eric never get picked for Scotland after that match and Brown the Scottish manager was there too!

Sept 10th 1955, away to Aldershot - we lost 2 3 (of course).

The Recreation Ground was rather odd - you paid to go in and then paid again to sit down. At half time the supports behind the goals walked down to the other end,

I remember my first game at the Dell vividly. But I'm not sure what was the first away. It was either Brighton for an evening game, or Liverpool. Which ever was first they were only a couple of weeks apart. Circa 1980 (ish). My mates dad and uncle drove us to Brighton and between them drank a bottle of Whisky on the terraces and then drove us home mullered. Happy days.

For the Liverpool game the same guy ran a coach mostly full of his extended family and significant numbers didn't make the coach home for various reasons.

92/93 season, Coventry. Lost 2-0, atrocious weather. Fat Boy Micky Quinn scored. We were absolute dross. Looking back at the team sheet, somehow Branfoot managed to get Doddsy, Franny, Kenna and Micky Adams in the same starting XI (I presume this was when Franny was still classed as a winger!)

West Ham away August 1970 1-1. Got Geoff Hurst's autograph outside the ground before the game. Tommy Jenkins gave us the lead with what might be the finest solo goal of all time, going past defender after defender and leaving Bobby Moore floundering. What a shame it wasn't filmed. Jimmy Greaves got a dodgy penalty for them to equalise. It was an evening game so we had a day out in London before, including going to the top of the Post Office Tower (now BT Tower) which you could do in those days.

Oh, bugger off all of you! :-) I can't remember but it was late sixties and I still reckon I beat Duncan!:-) If any of you have read Fever Pitch.. I lived in the same town, went to the same Maidenhead United games mentioned in the book, and had freedom to go up to London on my own at an early age (how times change)... So it would have been Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, etc. I definitely remember a 3-1 win at Spurs with Chivers scoring 2.. I was on The Shelf and cheering for the opposition was definitely not a good idea!

My first away game was at Swindon in October 1963.Swindon were undeafted at home and took an early lead. Chivers equalised and Paine got the winner. I remember running around the ground with my rattle frantically rotating in joyous celebration. The home fans just smiled at us!!
