Half time Honour for Channon

INFLUENCED.COM

Contribution to racing bigger than his contribution to football. Discuss.

Has been well documented he had a passion for it during his playing years, would be interested to know from his perspective what he enjoyed the most scoring the best goal ever for Saints, his first horse romping home or if they simply can't be compared.

As I said on the Big Ron thread, Solent Uni should be looking to complete the set of Saints Legends by honouring Ron Davies in the same way. Mick deserves such recognition as does MLT and Lawrie, but I think Big Ron would be just about the ultimate - the greatest centre forward the world has ever seen.

Surely even Nineteen would agree Mick was a legend.

or will he be knocked for going to City

I'm sure you have read my previous posts but Channon is my boyhood hero and what he has gone on to achieve after a great career in football by most standards is nothing short of astounding. I'm not a racing fan but with his modest background to go and train Group 1 winners that are normally the reserve of those of the landed gentry and closed racing circles is without equal.

He is one of the all time great sporting heros and a hardworking man of great vision and integrity. With the exception of Bates for his unique role at Southampton and no doubt in football Channon is without equal and others barely come up to his knees in regards to ambition and lifetime achievement. I have huge respect for Mick Channon.

This award is great but barely scratches what he deserves in terms of recognition for achievements in both his chosen careers.

Why would the Welshman Ron Davies ever be regsarded as the greatest English centre forward ??

You are such a great Saints fan that you think Ron Davies is English ! Priceless!!

Totally agree. A legend! Great to watch in those heady 70s and early 80s!

Oh dear Tame you can be a bit of anorak.I think you know what I meant but just to clarify for you. Its the same when we agreed that McMenemy could not be regarded as one of the top 20 managers past or present in the English game..

Also, anyone under the age of 40 would be probably pleased to have this little nugget of information passed on just in time to sit their Saints GCSE and get their season ticket application approved.

Perhaps you'd like to explain his move to Portsmouth after more than serving us well. Do you think a move like that today for one of our better appreciated players would be so well accepted by our tolerant fans?

Don't ask him questions like that!! You will be termed a Saints anorak. When Channon and Davies were playing for Saints, our friend 19C used to support Leeds United. He then went on to support Charlton. He has told us this himself in countless posts. He is clearly completely unaware that both Channon and Davies played for Pompey in the twilight of their careers.

No wonder he dislikes MLT and Lawrie. The Southampton teams that they played for / managed used to play and beat the team(s) that he supported at the time.

An honour well deserved.I have never really taken much notice of stats, but looking at his goals per game ratio's for Saints, Man City and England they are not too shabby.

Amazing that the guy has mixed with the gentry, held his own in their company, and excelled in both his careers, fantastic.I can still picture him walking down the corridor of the Dell in his flat cap and wellies, shouting "Mornin you ***kers". Mick Jnr. if you are reading this sorry to shatter your allusions, but yes your old man did swear a bit.;)

Great post, Teddy.

He's come a long way from Orcheston but all the way he's proven that "you can take the boy out of the village but you can't take the village out of the boy"!

I have similar memories but among the funniest was watching him trying to ride with jockey-length stirrups when he was 6' 2" - clinging to his dream of being a jockey while his knees rubbed against his ears.

And then seeing him trying to pick himself out of a gorse bush when the aforementioned riding style lost out to basic physics and centre of gravity stuff. During those few minutes he emitted more profanities than I had heard in my entire life to that point.

I am laughing away here, i can picture him in the bush, cursing. When i see him on the tele i always feel he will let "f" go by accident, decorum doesn't come naturally to Michael:smile:

No, I don't think so either.

Good question and one that can't be answered until he hangs up his saddle or whatever trainers hang up. If he stopped tomorrow I would say that football however if he continues to be successful at racing then the balance may tip in the racing favour.

I was a Leeds fan like all the other kids in my primary school. No different to todays being full of Chelsea and Man U and us Dad's still buying them Saints shirts although it was different 6 years ago, just ask the Saints the Community team. A Saints shirt is a rare sight and it was no different in 1976 when one particular 8 year old got caught up in the wave of local emotion.

So correct I never saw Ron Davies play - couldn't afford the bus fare - but i did see Channon and Ball and well aware of their Portsmouth connections and Channon's at Norwich which will make Saturday hopefully even batter for him.

It is ironic though the reception we would give a player who left us to go to Portsmouth in this day and age of ever deepening hatred and dissatisfaction.

The priceless thing about you Tame is your obsessiveness towards my posts when I haven't made a mistake as everyone but you accepted I was talking about the English game and as you usual you try and belittle me with asking answering a difficult question.

Here we go to another 3 months of being reminded of Tame's misunderstanding dressed up as my mistake but in any event where is the harm in new 8 year old fan not knowing every fact about every Saints player prior to his support. I was 8 ffs all I wanted was a new Saints nylon tracksuit.

I don't mind the abuse Tame but not from posters who never put their head above the parapet and actually voiced an opinion or started a thread worthy of discussion.

Nearly forget, I lived in Blackheath for 3 years with my young family so rather than travel to watch Saints as time and money was tight I watched Charlton for a while as my Mum's family are from the Bexley area and all Charlton fans. So yes unashamedly, I watched then quite often without losing my love of Saints or fix of watching football and yes I still like to see Charlton do well except against us. Then again I'm probbaly alone in thinking it would be great if both Pompey and ourselves were both established in the Premier League.

I think my reasons for my issues with MLT and McMenemy have been given and with my reasoning to my opinions. Also, lets not forget my issues with them have been after their playing and managing career and I doubt MLT would have shown up Norman Hunter more than once and Charlton weren't in the Premier League when I supported them and we moved house after they beat Sunderland in the playoff final. Saints v Charlton in the mid nineties, Priceless  ( Go on research it and tell me there was a cup game)

I saw Ron Davies play many times at the Dell, walking there rather than taking the bus. In my humble opinion, having watched many great centre forwards play at the Dell, St. Marys and many other stadia all over the world, Ron Davies was the best orthodox centre forward in the world. You never watched him, but the way he hung in the air, defying gravity as he headed the ball, explained why Ted Bates thought he was the best centre forward in Europe. I think he underestimated him...

what used to wind me up was the way the media and tv "bigged" up Wyn and ignored Ron.

Just because he played for Newcastle

Totally agree with you, Nineteen Canteen and everyone else! However, the subject of Mick not receiving any honours at all has been discussed before, as far as I'm aware he has not received anything though I believe that can only be due to MC turning down any honours he has been nominated for in terms of the Queen's honours list. However, that is just a guess on the basis his careers in football and horse racing mean he must certainly have been nominated. Does anyone know this for sure?

19 C, I would suggest that for Christmas you ask your wife to buy you a copy of Duncan Holley's rather excellent book on the history of the Saints. I know that you like to sneer at it (Duncan had a row with Rupert so therefore Duncan is a bad boy in your eyes) but if you were to read it and learn a bit about the club that you purport to support, your opinions may be regarded in a better light on this forum.

It isn't pricey but the contribution it would make to your knowledge would be priceless. :-)

Well as Mick once famously said to Lawrie Mac football is his hobby, horse racing his profession ! I find it very hard to compare the 2, suffice to say he has excelled in both fields.

Well my original copy complete with my name and that of my late Dad alongside is certainly priceless to me as is the knowledge. Which reminds me I must find out where my Mum has put my Dad's copy and hope her tendency to throw things away does not apply in this case !!

I think that might be an exaggeration with the greatest respect to Ron Davies. Saints yes, English maybe, The world - I don't think so.

Regardless of any view on this I suggest there is no doubt Big Ron deserves to rank alongside our all time greats, cannot imagine anyone who saw him disagreeing nor indeed anyone who didn't ! I would say certainly the best header of the ball I have ever seen anywhere and scored some cracking goals with his feet too which tends to get overlooked !!

As I suspected all along you have very little knowledge of Saints if you think Big Ron was English. You also clearly don't recall the song and if you had seen Big ron play you would have great difficulty in naming a better CF in the world. I'll stand by what I said.

I guess you also don't know then that Channon played for Saints before Ron, and like Channon also played for Norwich.

This hatred of Pompey that you seem to know so much about is a relatively new phenomenon, in the days when our great players moved down the road (pre M27) to play out their careers at a lower standard club was in the days when there was a rivalry, rather than hatred. The two things are very different, rivalry is healthy, hatred is not. Many many supoprters of Saints in those days would also slum it in the intervening weeks by going to watch Pompey (and vice versa of course). I used to regularly watch Pompey (though I did usually have the sense to stand in the away end). We were almost always in different divisions and so it was quite Ok to support both. In my time the real rivalry was with Spurs, not Pompey.

It is a reflection on sad people like you, not the players that you would find it difficult if a Saints legend player for Pompey. Just in case you are unaware by the way, I'll let you into another little secret, Bobby Stokes not only played for Pompey but he was a Pompey lad. While Bobby is not in the same league as Mick and Ron (in legend statsu) he is still something of a Saints legend primarily down to that one moment of glory - but I guess you would have had a problem with that as well.

Ron Davies, the greatest centre forward the WORLD has ever seen. FACT.

19C you really shouldn't get involved in discussions where you have little knowledge. Like GM says go look and go listen.

Ron Davies was acknowledged by Sir Matt Busby as the best centre-forward in Europe in 1969. Now I accept there might have been someone in S America who could make a similar claim but Pele was not a centre-forward therefore Vectis is within his rights to make his claim.

I have tried to treat your posts with respect because you do have original views but there are times I really do think it best if you keep maintain a silence. Take it from me Ron was the best. In short "Ron is King"!

My boyhood hero, can still see myself at school scoring & doing the Channon windmill to celebrate. What an absolute hero he was for Saints. What he has done since in the Racing world (not my scene I hate horse racing) is nothing short of phenomenal. To reach the top in 1 sport is the pinnacle of most people's careers. For Mick to go on & do it as a Trainer at another sport is truly what Legends are made of.

Congratulations Mick a well earned honour, enjoy your day back on the hallowed turf, Your true home.

Given your open, pure and repetitive hatred and disdain for MLT, McMenemy and Crouch in post upon post this has to be the most incredible statement you have ever posted on here.

House....stones.......glass spring to mind.

PS - Loving your football knowledge being torn to shreds on this thread.....now where else have I read or heard of someones lack of football knowledge showing them up ? Oh yes, your hero, Sir Rupert of Lowe life :) ;) xxx

I would like to think that Ron would "complete the set". I really don't think anyone else (given that this sort of honour is for living legends) would merit this status, and more would devalue it. Of course Sir Ted could have been rightly honoured in this way, but sadly that is not possible.

Think its great that some of my heroes are becoming fellow alumni of Solent Uni (OK, OK, it was the College of Technology in my day :) )
