oxfordshire_saint Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 Nah, they're staying up for sure, they've got the squad depth and stabli........ Who am I kidding, we'll happily relegate them from the CCC next season!
Matthew Le God Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 My only worry is that we'll miss them as we head in opposite directions and don't get to play them. i.e. Pompey go down this season, Saints miss the playoffs. Saints then go up to the Championship next season and Pompey go down to League One. I'm sure I could live with that series of events though. But would prefer to have two games against them in the Championship.

Saint Samuel Posted 12 January, 2010 Share Posted 12 January, 2010 I think Pompey are destined to play Championship football next season, what chance is there of them also starting on minus 10 next season like we had to? Would be good to keep them in the Champioship for 2 seasons, as I think we've only got an outside chance of reaching the play offs. Even if we do sneak in on the last day, its a lottery and we've already lost this season to likely play off contenders Swindon, Huddersfield and Colchester. Though to be fair, we're a lot better now then we were when we visited Huddersfield and Swindon back in August, when those teams visit St Marys soon we'll see how far we've come since then. Give it to Ron Posted 12 January, 2010 Share Posted 12 January, 2010 Nope they have the luck of old nick and will get out of this f'sure. Mandaric buyout and then the collapse of ITV digital are proof of that. I also think we will just miss out of the playoffs as we have too much of a mountain to climb this season. No pre-season, poor squad to start with, -10 all combined may prove too much.
slickmick Posted 12 January, 2010 Share Posted 12 January, 2010 Pompey will pay the same fate as Swindon did, for tax evasion and get relegated two divisions. Smirking_Saint Posted 12 January, 2010 Share Posted 12 January, 2010 I have always had faith in a southampton playoff push and have always said that we are a real force going forward, with the correct defensive purchases we could be a massive threat in the second half of the season. I have no doubt that fonte will strengthen that aspect and now expect saints to march on to wembley. If i was one of those 7 teams above us arizona, i would be worried. Jack Posted 12 January, 2010 Share Posted 12 January, 2010 Think we'll be lucky to make it to the playoffs, then if we do I'm not confident that we'd win it. We'd more than likely have to beat 2 out of Charlton, Norwich and Colchester. Fairly certain that the skates are going down. And when they do, who's going to bail them out?? As has been said before, all they currently have is premiership status and 2 or 3 premiership standard players. When they go down they will have neither, and nothing. I like that thought. SaintRobbie Posted 12 January, 2010 Share Posted 12 January, 2010 I dont think you're being over optimistic about playing Pompey, just optimistic. Pompey will be a CCC club, but we are still not good enough to guarantee promotion yet. Survival was the aim this year. I am content that we're not relegating to League 1 after the damage done by Lowe and Wotte. But, there IS a chance... a slim chance we could do this. I hope we do as I think Pompey will be League 1 the season after next and we'll miss them again as we rise to the CCC!!
SNSUN Posted 12 January, 2010 Share Posted 12 January, 2010 If somebody offered me promotion to the CCC this season in exchange for Portsmouth staying up, I'd take it. I'm not concerned with them, I just want to see what's best for us. These are exciting times (for us). The only thing that's letting us down currently is League placing. The sooner we move on up, the better. (Though I'm not too concerned with the Premiership, I just wish we could be in the CCC again.)

Wes Tender Posted 12 January, 2010 Share Posted 12 January, 2010 The likelihood of the Skates bring relegaated has grown as the season progresses. I believe it to be almost a certainty. By contrast, after a slow start, we have come on in leaps and bounds and if we succeed in bringing in the calibre of player that we are chasing, we will be in with a decent shout of scraping into the play-offs. If we achieve that, I am fairly confident that the impetus we will have and the confidence in the squad will give us an edge over the other four teams. So although by no means nailed on, it is certainly not beyond the realms of possibility.

Scudamore Posted 12 January, 2010 Share Posted 12 January, 2010 I don't doubt Saints, I doubt the ability of at least 7 good teams above us to really f**k up in the last 20 matches. Sorry. Half way through the season and without the ten point deduction we'd be in the play offs. Meaning we've been just as good as those teams whilst winning one game in ten at the start of the season. We cut out runs like that and i feel pretty confident that we can push on and get fifth or sixth place. And hopefully with the wind in our sails and confidence high and some added quality in the side from this transfer window we'll be in a prime position to win those playoffs. Now in my perfect scenario dirty Leeds without the goals of Beckford will drop like a stone into the play off positions and we'll have the beating of them going into the game mentally having already humiliated them in the JPT final. The game will then play out not disimilar to the game against Norwich this season...with a last minute heartbreak goal for Leeds, scenes of unbridalled joy in the stands from the Saints fans and ultimately a penalty shoot out victory which leaves Leeds fans crying all the way up the M1. Wes Tender Posted 12 January, 2010 Share Posted 12 January, 2010 It's like the halfway stage in the 10,000 metres. We're about halfway down the field, having got off to a slow start. We're still within reach of the leading pack. Some of them may have gone off too fast and we might manage to catch them. We know that we have a fast finish in us and are running comfortably within our ability. If we can get on the shoulder of the leading pack and put in a sprint around the final corner, we will have the psychological advantage that might see some heads drop around us. Tamesaint Posted 12 January, 2010 Share Posted 12 January, 2010 No way will we be playing them next season .... unless we get relegated and I do not think that is likely. They are going to be relegated this season as they are clearly not good enough for the Premiership. Their ex Chairman, chief executive and ex manager will all end up in prison for tax evasion & these misdemeanours will cause the Football league to sling them out into the Blue Square before they are reinstated to Division 2 on appeal. It happened before to Swindon. I do not think it is unlikely to happen again. Consider the punishment meted out to Luton for offenses nowhere as serious as those that Mad and Rich, Storrie teller and Saggychops are all facing. They are going down .... and I do not just mean Saggy and his chums.
Wes Tender Posted 12 January, 2010 Share Posted 12 January, 2010 According to Clown Prince Al Fahim, Pompey are the greatest investment opportunity in British football for somebody with £100 million to spend. http://www.sportspromedia.com/notes_and_insights/_a/sulaiman_al-fahim_advises_bids_for_portsmouth_west_ham_and_leeds_united/?utm_source=Syndication+Websites&utm_campaign=Syndication+Websites&utm_medium=syndication_websites I think that on the contrary, they are the best prospects for some wealthy lunatic with more money than sense to flush his fortune right down the drain. It's like being in an F1 car. Doing 10mph is not problem. Going 10mph faster than a Ferrari, very very difficult. I think we'll make a dent in the 10 point gap, but I don't think we'll get much higher than 8th/9th and 5 points adrift.

We don't need or expect anyone to do us a favour and even if we did why on earth do we need seven of the buggers to do us a favour? Seven? At least seven in your words? TijuanaTim Posted 12 January, 2010 Author Share Posted 12 January, 2010 Gotta say these are some fascinating opinions - thanks. In anticipation of your next response, I know four of those teams are within 5 points and I fully expect us to finish above them. However the other four will prove more dificult and we need to get ahead of ALL of them to reach the playoffs. 6th place last season was Scunny with 76 points. As it happens Swindon in 6th are exactly halfway there after 24 games with 38. For Saints to get 76 points would require another 48 points. That means winning 16 out of 24 games. It's a big ask. We've only managed 38 in the first half of the season and I don't think Fonte is worth another 10 points.

So basically we have to have the same form as the top 3 have done in the first half of the season. It's doable if we can produce Leeds or Norwich form for the remainder of the season. Trouble is we've only beaten 3 sides in the top half so far this season and none of them are in the top 6. I've been to games against Leeds, Norwich and Colchester and we aren't as good as them yet. Fonte will have improved us, as will potential other signings. Whether they are worth an extra 10 or 12 points combined I'm not convinced.
KK the 2nd Posted 13 January, 2010 Share Posted 13 January, 2010 I think it is a possibilty but still very unlikely. Pompey are likely to go down and are 1/3 with most bookies, best price 2/5. We are still outsiders to go up, 7/1 in most places. Best priced double on the two outcomes is 11.2 or 10/1. So based on the above, and allowing for bookies margins, there is about an 8% chance of this happening.

We have decent cover for the rest of the team, hopefully we sign a new midfielder (Stock/Danns) then it's just a case of keeping Lambert in cotton wool between games.
