Why would the team suspend their training, the ticket office close and the club shut down because cortese is away?.....what a bizarre post dull days

wasnt as bizarre as your OP

So let me get this right, you think it is more bizarre that we might not sign anyone for the next couple of weeks due to the guy that controls the finances, negociates the transfee fees and agrees the personal terms, being away on holiday, than the fact that due to the same guy being away, the team suspend training, close the ticket office and shut the club down?.................... finger on the pulse there Mikey.

Now of course, things can still be done whilst he is away, but the way that he has conducted himself and run the club to date, suggest he is pretty much one man show and I can't see him delegating this sort of responsibility, so if he is happy to work on deals whilst he away, great, we might see some new faces, but if he is not, then I can't see us signing anyone else until he returns.

Can we panic now ? Really ? After all, after the last spate of threads, those sneering said that we would get players in for the pre-season tour but they would also panic/worry if we didnt have the players we need by the beginning of August.

By my estimates we are still short a CM and a pacey winger to replace the loss of Antoino and Papa.

is this the same antonio and papa that didnt really start that many games? AP has his midfield 4. yes we need backup but i would suggest these arent as urgent.

You lot really need to get over this whole chairman obsession...

thought people looked forward to the demise of Lowe/Crouch etc so we could forget about the board and talk football!

notice some post numerous posts on anything to do with Cortesse tickets etc but not once when we sign a player!

You can if you want to but with 3 weeks until the season starts and over 6 weeks until the transfer window closes I won't just yet if it is all the same to you.

Panic, lol.

There's a difference between panic and hoping things are sorted in good time, bearing in mind last season's start.

But maybe I'm wrong in thinking we failed to get into the playoffs because of a slow start. I'll start worrying 3 weeks into the season, then.

Our main problem ALL THROUGH THE SEASON was lack of drive in midfield with CM delivering almost no goals between them. And we really don't have any wide pace yet either. There's time yet to address both of those, of course. Two good signings have been made so far, so I'm sure our additional needs will be sorted, but it would have been better to get those players in for pre-season.

Or is it illegal to say that?

There was a note in the Echo (OK, I know that it's not the favoured house journal!) in June that the club wasn't expected to sign many players. I wonder where that info came from, because all the expectations from fans was for a large number - (An RB or two; another CB; one or two wide players; another CM and the backup for RL which AP was talking about. That makes some 5-7, but we have had two, and amongst those an LB which we weren't expecting.) - AP also made me believe that he was looking for lifting the squad up to CCC level.

With AP in Switzerland and NC on holiday a lot of things will still be going on at the club, but we will not be signing players unless the contracts are already negotiated, only awaiting international clearance or some other condition. Judging from the evidence I think I will prepare myself for very few signings this summer.

And the paranoid part of me says: If AP isn't top two by christmas he will be replaced, and any further signings will be identified by the next manager...

Lallana scored 20 goals, does he not play in midfield?, Puncheon scored goals as well; for the umpteenth time, it is not the role of Morgan and Hammond to score goals or be continually floating about in the opponents box, that role is assigned to Puncheon and Lallana and they do it very very well. Ths obsession with a goal scoring central midfielder is becoming tiresome, we have Lallana and Puncheon and that's good enough for me.

agree...it is quite clear that morgan and hammond are to sit in the middle of the park....neither really get forward they leave that to the likes of lallana, puncheon, lambert, harding, richardson...

playing that way with two players sitting in the middle is what allows the full backs to push on and provide withe width even more so...

You disagree with Pardew in that case, who wants a box to box CM. How tiresome of him.

There's a few people saying or at least feeling this, but it doesn't make sense - it doesn't fit with the game plan. Cortese is a winner - to be a winner you don't hold back something in reserve just in case you don't make it. He wants promotion - he needs it - and the best chance he has is to stick with the winning combination that he has assembled including AP. That means the best tactic is support AP, keeping the winning mentality going and if necessary sign the players needed to ensure we succeed this season. Conversely, if he doesn't support AP then he will be held accountable for not providing the resources necessary to ensure the job gets done, whatever the season brings (i.e. injuries that deplete the squad).

PS: One thing not mentioned much on the forum already is how the average age of the 1st team has come down since last season. Particularly in defence, we now have excellent cover.

Maybe Cortese has gone off on holiday having tied up any immediate signings but without details of who those signings may be being released to the wider world? Who knows, may be the OS will release a story tomorrow morning, for instance, saying Jackson has signed and has joined up with the rest of the squad in Switzerland...

Adjusted to take on board the very reasonable point that we don't make morning announcements!

That's an irrelevance. The squad has been cleared out and there are clearly gaps now which need filling. NC would have approved the clearing out list and also would have agreed to a fund to replace them with whatever AP wanted basically. But the one thing he would NOT have done was to short change because he has some cunning plan to sack AP at Xmas if things go wrong - he simply cannot and would not play games like that! He is a (very astute) professional businessman - not a spotty child on a interweb forum. Reading between the lines with regards to everything that is happening to re-build the club, my view is that every brick that is laid is done so with a positive spirit and everyone involved is committed to the project.

We need a starting XI CM.

That's about it for top signings, I'd think.

We need cover at centre back (e.g. someone not as good as Fonte, Jaidi or Seabourne)

We need cover at right back (e.g. I'm not sure Harding can be 2nd choice)

We may need another winger (depending on a reasonable - but not excessive - bid for Antonio or Papa, we're sorted)

Otherwise, I think we need to sign promising reserves on about £500-£1000 a week. No more.

If we can get a top signing, that's great. But I'm not holding my breath and don't think I need to.

Look at our team....

GK: Kelvin (awesome at this level) + Bart (amazing cover if he stays)

LB: Harding (top drawer at L1) or the new bloke from Brentford (also rated as top drawer), plus Mills still here?

RB: Richardson, L1 player of the season in this position, plus Harding seems okay at it (but we do need 3rd grade cover)

CB: Fonte (class), Jaidi (still pretty class), Seabourne (TBD, but not bad), Martin (TBD) - we need 1 CB on Seaborne's level

LM: Lallana or Puncheon or Dickson or Mills (plus Papa?)

RM: Lallana or Puncheon or Oxlade (plus Antonio or Papa? or equivalent?)

CM: Hammond + Schneiderlin (Wotton is not great as back-up...so either coverage here or someone able to beat DH or MS to starting line up)

CF: Lambert, Connolly, Barnard (deep cover may be needed, and hard to replace RL...but any 2 from these 3 if best front line in L1)

Although - sadly - we're at a different level to 2003, I remember then going to a fans forum and WGS saying it was damned hard to work out who he could buy (at say, 2-4m) who was obviously better than who he had already. I think we're in an equivalent (albeit lowlier) position.

If we're fishing in the 500k-1m pool, these guys are going to want to be in the starting line up. If we're aiming higher, we're looking at a player to knock out one of our starting line-up. We probably need to aim lower and get a bunch of players with promise but are happy to start as reserves.

Why would Cortese go on holiday in mid July, when every other club is is signing players?? Im pretty sure if he was holidaying it would of been in mid June.

The other thing im pretty sure on is that our transfer targets was selected months ago and many may be close to fruition. I would be surprised and dissapointed if we didnt make a signing this week

Davis

Richardson Fonte Jaidi Harding

Hammond Sneiderlin Dickson

Puncheon Lallana

Lambert

Subs: Bart, Barnard, Connolly, Seaborne, Mills or Oxlade-Chamberlain

I like the look of that, but I'm not sure Harding will start ahead of Dickson in the LB slot.
