Professor

Recommended Posts

In his first term Alan showed that he has a good understanding of the subject but he could improve his consistency in putting this knowledge into practice. Alan has generally displayed a positive attitude, although he may tend to be a little less certain when challenged by the headmaster. He does have ready explanations for failings which is appropriate when necessary to deflect criticism but Alan should avoid being mislead by his own propaganda as he assesses what is required to achieve success in the coming term.

last season:

came into the club late with incomplete, unmotivated unbalanced side

after building during 7 games without a win (worrying time) he managed still to earn 83 points.

(Last season Leeds went up with 86 points.)

Over the next 39 games therefore we earnt 78, exactly 2 points per game - or projecting over 46 games 92 points.

A team capable of earning 2 points per game is a very good and extremely consistent one, and shows that he can keep team motivated against a variety of opponents even when it looked likely it would achieve nothing.

He also won our first trophy for years.

All permanent signings have been successful.

A very very good start.

Important year ahead.

How often are you going to repeat this completely one-sided summary ? Are you trying to bore the dissenters / concerned to death ?

Some of the points are reasonable explanations for last season. This season (including a disappointing pre-season) there are NO excuses. NONE.

Irony - that is all.

Alan came to Saints High with a mixed record of success from his previous schools and last terms exam results were not all they could have been frankly . Nevertheless with the help of some new friends Alan has shown some good promise lately and he has assured the Headmaster that he intends to knuckle down to his work this term and reach the (high) standards we all know he is capable of .

You can rest assured that the entire staff will be monitoring his progress very closely .

In this post Professor has displayed a tendency for condesension and pretension. Within the aspect of living up to his username and perceived role on an internet forum this is entirely in keeping with his online persona. However professor should realise that other threads exist to express his opinion on without having to start a new one based on purely upon his own need for validation of his opinion.

I mean, honestly? "Alan showed that he has a good understanding of the subject but he could improve his consistency in putting this knowledge into practice" You pompous sod!

one-sided? Well its mixture of fact and my opinion.

Seems you don't like it because he did well, says more about you than anything.

I "dont like it" because I think he could have done better. I reckon our best chance for promotion has been wasted.

What the f*ck are you talking about, the season hasn't started. How can we have wasted our best chance for promotion before we've even kicked a ball?

Jesus H I think my brain is melting.

Already melted, I reckon. I was referring to last season.

Right, OK.

So we've swapped Norwich, Leeds and Millwall for Plymouth, Wednesday and Peterborough. The league is weaker this season.

We are 10 points better off this season than last.

We have a better first team and better back up than the start of last season, and 90% of them have been in place for a long time.

And yet you think LAST season was a better chance for promotion than THIS season?

Agreed, this season our chances of promotion are much better than last. This is a FACT.

Last season I backed us to win the league at 150/1. This year, the best odds available are 5/2. That is all the evidence you need.

See, that's at least one point that is heavily in dispute.

We have weaker attacking options than last season, and even then we couldnt unlock the likes of Wycombe and beat the likes of Exeter, Tranmere, Brentford and Oldham.

How boring; another "you dont agree with me so you dont know what you are talking about" comment....

Lecture me when we've won against Plymouth rather than achieved the usual bore-draw, OK ?

I know where you're coming from Alps, So far we've played 0 Won 0 Drew 0 Lost 0. It's not good enough.

it's such a stupid thing to say though. Last season was never about promotion, your pre-season prediction last year proved that.

We will be promoted this year with or without AP.

Last year Alpine predicted we would finish 16th - 18th. Being as this year he thinks we'll do worse, I can only surmise we're going to have a relegation dogfight on our hands this year.

You reckon our best chance for promotion was when we had a ten point penalty and needed to completely rebuild the team. Could you explain why please?

Strange isn't it - a quite original theme to a thread and it has almost entirely transformed into an 'Alpine slagging moment', thanks largely to Alpine. After reading through that diatribe I can't find the enthusiasm to respond to the OP. Probably why many don't bother posting here anymore.

agreed,

I'll try and bring it back on topic.

I think Pard's performed well last season, there were moments you questioned certain aspects of his decision making but most of the time they were proven to be the correct decision. His signings last season were faultless, maybe only Mellis the one having a question mark over his name (and he was only a short loan).

This season i think it's just a case of carry on as you were in the grand scheme of things, but i still think there is room for slight improvement in certain areas such as away tactics etc.

Overall i think he's overwhelmingly the right man and hasn't done anything wrong to warrant any major criticism. He's one of the reasons why we are hot favorites for the title.

This is the team that Alpine claims to think stood better chance is league with -10 (first game last year)

Southampton: Davis, Murty, Thomas, Perry, Harding, James, Wotton, Schneiderlin, Lallana, Paterson, Saganowski. Subs: Bialkowski, Gillett, Holmes, Lancashire, Pulis, Thomson, Gobern.

Must all be glad they were not around last season, with that strong line up from last year above, as they would never have got in the squad - but guess Alps is right, the squad in post 37 stood a lot better chance of promotion even with -10 than this lot does starting on zero!

Without going into tobelerones comments, I would say that AP has had a very good first term. he shows lots of promise but needs to reach out to acheive his full potential.

He is strategically and tactically aware on the playing fields but just needs to know the precise moment when to tweak the team to make them work to optimum levels.

I believe this will be a good term ahead of him and I believe he will achive great improvements this season

The only downside has been his weakness in the Home economics and Art classes

Lets hope the report at the end of the season doesn't read .... "At the end of last season we said good effort, but can do better .... well, it seems we were wrong"!!

The truth is that our expectations for this year are infinitely higher than last year (with the odd (very odd) exceptions ;)

It's got to the stage where anything outside the top 2 at Xmas, there will be masses of posts calling for AP's head on a platter. I actually think even a top 2 place will still have the same murmerings of discontent if we fail to score 3 goals every week!!

How on earth can you come to such a daft conclusion. Last season we had a 10 point deduction, a dispirited demoralised team, curtailed preseason and need to bring in lots of new players, added to the fact that by most measures we were in the strongest Division 3 for many years, maybe ever, with 7 or 8 outstanding teams (and 16 mediocre/poor ones). The League is considerably weaker this season, we already have 10 points more than we did last season, we have the same 1st team as were the best team in the last part of last season, we have a settled management team and we have 5 weeks to go before the transfer season closes, we also have 3 good players added to last season (admittedly we have lost 2) plus we have a fit DC. Yet somehow you think we have a lesser chance than last season. Sometimes you talk a lot of sense. Other times you remind me of the press officer for Ferrari.

Saints best chance for promotion was a season with...

-10 points

a manager taking over in mid July of a team that was a mess

a team not probably taken shape until the end of the January 2010 transfer window

???

Some of your posts are beyond belief!!! :D

As stupidly disingenuous as usual, NickG. The squad in post #37 only played a few games in that form, and you know it. Compare the squad from the last games of the last season with now and the first 16 is weaker.

You prove time and again that any sensible discussion with you is as big a waste of time as any discussion with me is accused of being. However, you strike a better chord with the happy-clappy contingent, of course.

Lets wait until later before we make those kind of judgements injuries to Dickson and Richardson are unfortunate but I fully expect some more players to be recruited.

How can you say this ? You have no idea how the team will gel, how the new signings will perform, if the likes of Morgan and Rickie will stay fit.

Maybe last season overall with the form we had will turn out to be the best window of opportunity for some time to come.

Disappointing that the average Saints fan refuses to see the uncertainty in all this and is being totally complaicent about this season.

EDIT: I wonder if that is the reason for some of the aggression towards me - pointing out things no-one wants to hear...
