Swindon and Subbuteo - The Sun

But what they don't seem to get is by doing that they are actually giving us publicity. Everyone knows it is Southampton they are talking about. Anytime they run a story on the subject they are giving the club publicity. If they just failed to mention us, our results or any news connected to the club then they wouldn't be. If anything it shows they are becoming desperate in having things to criticise us for. All the other media groups have dropped it. The Sun will too eventually when the next thing to campaign against comes along. And at that point will make them look even more stupid then they do already.

You can see it, I can see it. Everybody can see it apart from those who run the comic. I wonder what they will do when we make the headlines with our new management appointment shortly?

That was a massive shame for the Swindon faithful who did not get to see any photos

Umm why is it a shame that you can't see a picture (if they actually include any from this match)? All it is is a pic of the goal scorer being molested by his team mates. Hardly exciting. Anyway, that once proud newspaper that is now a complete pile of shi'ite and a waste of trees, can stop being so damned hypocritical. All we ever see are photos of the top 6 in the PL. If I was NC, I would lift the "ban" and then see how many pics are used.

Actually whatever your views are on The Sun, they are the one body (?) not to pick a fight with..... You can't win and won't win. Ask any outgoing politician.

As for the whole picture fiasco, the reality is you can slag them off as much as you want, but this one has come back and smacked Cortese right in the face and been a commercial disaster for the club. This revenue generating idea has turned into a loss making debarcle and a complete loss of face with the National Press.

Quite correct. Unnecessary and unhelpful.

You are right in that they are giving SFC more column inches than they previously would have had but I think by highlighting Cortese's dopey decision they make it easier for all the other media to give us the cold shoulder.

For example if we actually do anything newsworthy (unlikely) like win 9-0 with a Lambert triple hat-trick, some newspapers might have thought it would warrant putting a pic in. If all their readers are aware of the Cortese situation, and the paper knows it's competitors wont use a pic there is no need to bother buying one off SFC.

All the more reason to fight them.

They try and make Saints look stupid to their moronic following because we don't do things their way, but what is another club did it? What if 10 clubs did it? Or 20? It would be THEM looking ridiculous, even to the idiotic majority who read it. They'd be killing their own football coverage.

From Saints point of view, it just means we get more attention in the Sun than we would have otherwise.

Yeah, **** of the same people who own Sky TV - genius.

How much does(did) the club get every time they are(were) shown live on Sky?

TBF i think its more comical the sun making such a massive deal out of the whole issue, they could just ignore us instead they are looking like prats. If i were to put money on it i bet NC doesn't back down first.

Don't be so naive.

The outgoing politician was probably caught sunk to the nuts with some rent boy or similar, as long as Cortese does not indulge in the same or acts fraudulantly I see no reason why he should fear them and as yet can't see how this has smacked him in the face and been the disaster you suggest, as suggested by others this reporting is bringing more publicity to the club and I am sure their are an equal number that support the position taken as them that don't.

Exactly as I see it.

If this was do-able, Man U, Liverpool etc would have done it. All it's doing is costing us money and making us look like tw8ts.

And what about all the newspaper that are now simply ignoring us, and will continue to do so, because much as I hate to say, we need them more than they need us. And that goes for 95% of all English clubs. The only exceptions are the big 5, and even they haven't bothered doing this, because it's simply not worth it.

Why? He's an idiot. Is it that he's simply our idiot?

Why is he an idiot? if we can get money from papers from selling pics and that gets money back in then surely that makes sense? we need to generate income from every possible avenue in order to be self sufficient, good business i say. I think your being naive mate if you cant see the big picture.

You can ask for money but you probably won't get any. Do you really think that anybody else in the country cares about Southampton FC?

Not really working though, is it? Have we even sold 1 official photo to a media outlet?

As has been said above, not if nobody is buying them. And I'm not sure that everyone is aware how little a paper pays an agency for sports pix. If all the nationals were buying them NC would create a few hundred quid each game, thats all.

So for the chance to make that pittance, he's made us a publicity blackout. So yes he's an idiot.

It's f*cking pathetic actually. The Sun are trying to prove a point, but all they're doing is making themselves look completely childish and moronic in the process. Mind you, they've been doing that with their writing for years.

Don't worry about the Sun, everyone knows what a toss paper it is. Worry about all the other nationals that are now just ignoring us. As i keep trying to point out, we need the nationals more then they need us.

what do we need them for ? I am not being flippant, if you support our club you will continue to do so irrespective of what the paper does or does not report, is the exclusion of our name in national papers reducing the number of 'new' fans, surely on a national scale there are more attractive propositions for young tommy in Worcester to support ?

I think that is why the Sun is taking this stance. They couldn't give two hoots about us, but if other clubs like those that you are mentioning see us doing is successfully, then they will no doubt do it themselves. And if they do that, then the papers are going to have to pay a lot more to cover their pages with PL teams. So the Sun is basically going to d**k us over, so that they can send a message to ManU/C, L'pool, Chelsea, Arse, Suds etc

I am not saying its working, but its worth a try surely, we need as much money coming in as possible?

It's been reported in several places that plenty of clubs have tried this tack before, and it has always backfired.

If manure and chelski can't pull it off, do you really think cortese can?

the bloke is out of his depth.

I agree young tommy from Worcester ain't ever going to support us. But a significant amount of income comes from advertising, and although we have no shirt sponsor this year we will want one again one day, and not ever having the club covered in the press is going to significantly dent our negotiation position. And one of the selling points to Tommies Timber Yard, was the thought his small perimeter hoarding might get splashed across the Sundays. All for a few lousy quid. And it really is small change in the scheme of things that NC would have made if successful.

And do you remember the feel good factor when we were in the Premiership beating your Man Us and getting the Sundays the next day to read all the coverage? They aint going to happen again. It's nuts.

How can you tell that all the other nationals are ignoring us? I don't recall the last time I saw any reports, and certainly not pictures in any national newspaper about Saints, other than the JPT, unless it is a regional variation issue. Most papers don't print anything more than 1 line about any team outside the top 2 divisions, even the Championship is hardly worthy of a mention in most. I don't think the nationals are boycotting Swindon, The Gas, Rochdale, Hartlepool etc. The Sun is actually printing more about us than all of the others would normally put together. Then again even the Sun's coverage is only really reporting what is in the Swindon Adver - Subbuteo pics made the front page banner today.

This will only really be an issue if/when we get back to the Prem, and after last night that looks a dim and distant prospect.

+1, and a point I made when this all kicked off. I cant understand why its supposed to be 'bad' for the club that some tabloid rag only fit to wipe your ar5e with decides to refer to us as "The South Coast Club" and whine pathetically to mummy that the nasty mans wont let them take their piccy wiccys inside the gwound. I say f*ck them, and back the people who run the club. Our club.

LOL...some of the comments on here are funny.

Lets get things back to their most basic form;

Q: Why did Cortese introduce the ban on photographers in the first place ?

A: To make money

Q: How much money is it making

A: Jack , Didly Squat. It's actually costing the club money.

Q: Was it / is it a successful business venture

A: Do the maths

The funny thing about this is there's actually photos from last night on the Swindon website, likewise on the Plymouth, Leyton Orient, and Bolton website all contain professional photos from our games at St Mary's. Does that mean other clubs have accepted the photographer ban and are actually paying us for the use of them?

The Bournemouth site looks like they've had a couple of photographers hidden in the Chapel and Away Stand with bog standard digital cameras.

Official club photographers are allowed in, they just can't sell to press.
