Not just loans available - we can sign free agents too. Interesting piece here about the stories behind some of those out of contract. Francis Jeffers or Jeremie Aladiere as backup strikers? (not that they ever scored many) or Darren Powell as centre back ;)

Prior to Pards being sacked I thought we only needed two players a winger in the Antonio mould and a centre forward to cover for Lambo.

Now I think at least three we are ok at the back for numbers and cover we have to get a wide player with pace and power and we need another decent centre forward we also need another centre midfielder the Hammond/Spiderman partnership is not working at the moment I think Morgan is a real talent but Hammond isnt doing it at the moment.

I am yet to be impressed with Guly early days I know but so far I dont think he is the answer centre midfield we must start moving the ball quicker and making more of our possesion we are playing with no tempo centre midfield is the heartbeat of the team.

I hope Adkins has his eye on a few loans the team could do with shacking up on paper we have a great starting 11 if he can get some confidence back into them and get some competition for places in we might get back on track

ok...antonio please

In reading's 7 league and cup games so far, Antonio has started in 2, come on as sub in 3, and been an un-used sub in the other 2. And given that Adkins has probably never seen him play, and has certainly never worked with him, it's extremely unlikely he'll be coming back.

It's certainly a position that I hope Adkins brings someone in for, but it's massively unlikely to be Antonio.

We can't sign a player everytime someone 'isn't doing it' though. Simple fact is, most the team haven't performed this season. Doesn't make them rubbish, but it means the manager has to get them playing quickly. If they can't find form in the longer term, then maybe replacements will be needed, but I'm sure most will.

Think Guly needs time to settle and show what he can do. People slagged him off despite the fact he's only played in the managerless games where EVERYONE has been fairly woeful. Time to judge him is from now.

I am not suggesting we buy a player whenever someone loses form however from the start of the season we have lacked genuine competition for places in centre midfield Morgan & Deano played very well last season but if 1 gets injured suspended or loses form like now what do we do ?

I accept Guly needs a bit more time to adjust and as fans we can be critical to quickly I remember Bennett we had on loan from Reading was woeful for his first few games but then turned in some top performances and we were sorry to see him go but I can only go on what I see and right now I am not impressed I hope I eat my words and he ends up being brilliant.

Even if Guly turns out to be good is he the centre midfielder we need at the moment I think it is a area we must have competion for places and decent cover that, and some pace & power wide & up front and we have the options we need.

Our starting 11 when on form & confident are for me the best in league so if NA can get them at it we will start climbing the table but when they are not at it we havent got any depth of squad in the key areas highlighted I hope he changes that in the loan window.

100% correct! I have been putting forward the same argument for months now! Competition for places in midfield, pace and power on the wings and upfront are absolute certainties!

................. I almost hope we pick up without signing anyone just to highlight the overreaction on here................

Oh Adrian, I'm sure we all hope that, without the almost even, but hope isn't a certain way of making progress.

Reality is that this team, despite all the expectations, high wages, or whatever, is currently not as good as 20 other teams in the 3rd division. That doesn't mean all the players are not up to it, but we have heard it said by Wilkins, and now by Adkins, that new players are needed. Adkins is being careful not to demoralise people who might be replaced, but he has said it as carefully as he can.

He's also talked about Saints' highly developed scouting network, so its reasonable to assume that there is a file with names in it. Maybe the block is money, and Cortese's hold on the purse strings, but every game that passes without strengthening makes this years' project more difficult to achieve, and already sights are much lower.

Its hard to overreact when your side is in the relegation places.

Jay Demerit

Nicky Butt

Jeremy Aliadere

and we might just have a hope of squeaking 6th place.

Interesting to see Jamie White on the list of homeless footballers.

Aliadiere won't be signing for anybody to aleast january at the earliest as he picked up a bad injury whilst training with West Ham prior to the transfer deadline.

Have you actually seen any of those players play club football in the last year? There's a reason they haven't got clubs.

Money could well be he problem. The untimely passing of our owner has all kinds of implications re probate and wills as has been mentioned on anothet thread. Then there is the matter of the dismissale of 3 employees. It could well be that we are just not flush right now.

I think 6th is a fair shout. I was talking about rummaging in the bargain basement of football transfers. Aliadiere hardly scores for fun, tho he is better than what we have in an injured Connoly and Barnard. Butt is about 103 but better than Hammond, Goolie and Wotton. Demerit would be quality in L1 tho and an infinite improvement on Jaidi, Martin and Seaborne.

The early days excuse is wearing thin. We are moving ever nearer a quarter of the season gone. Saying what last season's squad did is pointless, that squad included Papa, Antonio, a fit (or interested) Lambert and a one year younger Jaidi. And a Premier League level manager.

We have had none of that this season and we also have zero confidence. If we don't bring in some new faces to freshen things up I cannot see us getting much out of 2 away trips to SHeff Wed and Yeovil and then the visit of Bournmouth and if we get only one or 2 points from that bunch I'm afraid it's the business as usual relegtion scrap for us..... yet again.

As posted on the 'no forwards' thread: none or limited loan and transfer activity and we can start to think the worst – the money has either run out (unlikely in my opinion though it starts to look like it) or, as alluded to above, NC spent more than he wanted to last Jan and needs to keep the purse strings tight for the next twelve months? If this is the case I think it would be a major gamble from NC and the club – we have a good squad and an excellent manager and still have all to play for this season, but we are desperately short in certain areas -what’s the point of saving for a rainy day that never comes? If we don’t get the personnel in to kick start our season while there’s still time we will effectively condemn ourselves to another year at this level, with the strong likelihood that some players will want-away in Jan or at the end of the season, leading to a possible downgrading of the squad that has been assembled at considerable (in Div 3 terms) cost.

In my book NC has redeemed himself somewhat with an excellent appointment in NA, now he needs to back him with a decent loan or two to give the team and the fans a lift. If we really can't afford one or two decent loans then it just might be bye-bye new Saints, welcome back selling-club Saints with NA stuck in the old sell-to-buy routine?

If there is a wantaway exodus in January (as is likely if things don't improve quickly) with the possible likelihood of Lambo, Lallana, Fonte, Davis, Morgan, and Barnard looking to move on it will be interesting to see NC's reaction. I rather fear that he will tell them that they are under contract and dig his heels in leading to a potential mutiny. The feelgood factor in the shape of three or four short term loans (we shed something like 15 players in the summer for goodness sake!) is now a necessity to support the new manager with options and moreover save this season.

Never a dull moment...

I agree with this. Up to mid June this year we were making all the right moves; we'd solved the right back problem, signed a very promising left back, the manager had stated that he was still looking to add to the squad in a number of key areas, and we'd cleared out a lot of the dead wood in the squad.

Since then we've had 1 more player who filled none of the key areas positions previously identified, and seemingly have a squad of injured, unfit or demotivated players.

Adkins has two major jobs to fulfill; first of all, get the current squad up to fitness and playing to some sort of form. And secondly, bring in the 3 players we need to actually provide the squad depth required for the course of the season.

It's all the more friustrating as the full extent of our current malaise was so very avoidable.

Good point' date=' well made. How long does it take to see we have 3 strikers, all carrying injuries, and to assess players like Pulis and Wotton before deciding they're not up to the job?![/quote']

which is why I think we have a cash flow problem and have had for a few months. Why else would we start the season with only 3 strikers of which one, Connoll, is/was a gamble?

Can't believe there's not even a sniff of a rumour about a signing. Maybe NA is going to see how we fare at the weekend before entering the loan market? Even so' date=' if Connolly is injured, I'd be surprised if there's nothing really in the offing?[/quote'] I have a feeling in my gut we'll have a loan signing by Friday evening. Not ITK just think the options seem very thin to us fans so they must be obvious to NA and staff.

Quite a few good loanees picked up today, we have plenty of LB cover so no need for george mccartney who went to leeds but jake livermore and chris wood who went to ipswich and barnsley respectively could have been great acquisitions, especially wood as that cover for lambert

the problem is all of those clubs are Championship clubs and they will get the pick of the loans from the premiership because of the perceived levels of football in the Champioship and League 1 or 2.

I think its a case of making a move quickly, the clubs make these players available for loan and the players wouldnt be holding out for a championship team if they can get a move to a top L1 club, all they want is regular competitive football....or so you would think, theres plenty of players happy not playing reguarly and getting paid.
