Sharp, Maynard, CMS - who would be best for saints?

I have no idea if the rumours linking us with any of these players are true, or if we would be able to sign them over other clubs.

However they all seem to be realistic but exciting potential signings.

I have seen a fair bit of CMS and not sure he is worth money being spoken about.

I don't know much about the other two.

read this thread

Has anyone here seen enough of them to say who would be best addition to our squad?

Maynard seems to be the favorite on that thread

CMS seems to be able to create something out of nothing, which is an ability we've long lost. Having a goal scorer is great, having a striker great, but having somebody who will fight every minute and can create chances out of nothing, that's invaluable and that is where, IMO, CMS shines.

We wont survive the CCC on set pieces alone.

only scored 10 in 43 his only season at that level. Most of his career has been conference and league 2

I know, my point was that he isn't untested at that level (as suggested in the post I quoted). I didn't comment if he was a success or not. In any case 10 goals for a relegated team isn't that bad tbf.

not good either! He has clearly improved. Sounds like he is off to West Ham. Personally think he has his limitations and am glad we didn't pay silly money for him in January.

These other blokes sound better prospects to me.

I'm a big fan of CMS. Works hard, has pace an is a good finisher - But I couldn't choose him above Maynard or Sharp because those 2 are proven (and are 2 of the best) in the championship.

What sort of money are P'boro wanting for CMS? Any idea?

Round £2.5m-3m I think.

its also value for money - how much better is CMS than Lee Barnard - who is little younger and probably apart from last season not hugely different scoring rates.

Will swapping CMS for LB improve the team? Probably.

Will keeping LB and spending £4m on a CM improve the team more? Quite possibly.

Lallana

Lambert

Guly

Connolly

Chamberlain

Papa Waigo!

... but to replace Alex if he goes, and although I rate Papa upfront I would prefer any from CMS, Sharp (who I was ranting on about three seasons ago) and Maynard. If we lost Alex, Papa alongside Lambo and Lallana with one of these would be an unbeatable strike force imho.

Just add Dans and we'll make a really big impression in the CCC.

If the report today that Steve Maclaren is after Maynard for Notts Forest we can probably rule that one out. There could be a chicken and egg situation that quality players are more likely to sign for a club that is demonstrating its ambition by the status of its manager and whether it is actively making signings. Like it or not, NA does not have the status of some of the people now managing in the NpC so the first signing is important and the longer it is left the more the problem may arise that players we want may choose not to come.

I don't think Adkins will have any problem attracting players - if we show ambition, pay fees etc we will get players

Thats how I see it too

There is a lot of competition in the Championship and a lot of good managers also looking for players so lets hope we have something to offer them

I was very tempted to post the same, but thought better of it due to the uproar it would cause amongst those who worship at the feet of Adkins.

players will be swung by all sorts of factors - fact that Adkins isn't famous is not likely to be one.

Typical factors are likely to be;

1) money

2) money

3) money

4) how they think team will do

5) are the team on the way up - something we have over some championship clubs, our manager can give genuine reasons why we are on the way up, can Cardiff, Notts F etc?

6) geography

7) other players there

8) have they played for manager before

etc

etc

Not whether he is famous and glamorous!

Adkins does seem to be popular with players, the team spirit appears better than I can remember it - easy when winning and doing so impressive as Adkins did.

Some in the game may have noticed this

Maynard but quite a long way!

has the pace we need - and a great scoring record in the Championship - also has the ability to step up to the Premier League I would think

I'm not sure CMS will be that good in the Championship - he only scored 10 goals or so last time around - and Sharp has had his dry spells at this level as well

however I think Maynard would be the better fit with Lambert and the rest of the team - and he has the killer pace we so desperately need

I will give that the same reply as i did on the 'fixtures released' thread....

However,we will be up against a totally different class of opposition with a a much more level playing field interms of quality at our and others disposal.

Last season we had a massive advantage over many of our opposition. We should have done well.

indeed..and now we are back in the real world of football where there seems to be few good NPC signings with more clubs going for them...more clubs with more likelyhood of pushing for promotion that us.....

real world..not easy league 1 where people will sign for us for no other reason than being saints

What? I dont understand, how can this be when we are the most attractive club outside of the top 4 clubs in England, can get crowds of 45,000 every week and they said man would never climb everest?
