Esteban Granero

According to the Mirror, Poch is looking at getting Granero from QPR for next season. Thoughts? Would be a good signing in my opinion.

Meanwhile, Southampton manager Maurico Pochettino is ready to offer QPR midfielder Esteban Granero a Premier League lifeline.

The 25-year-old, signed from Real Madrid for £9million last August and one of Harry Redknapp’s highest-paid players, is facing the prospect of relegation to the Championship only a season into a four-year contract.

Pochettino is looking to bolster his squad for next season and is an admirer of Spain Under-21 international Granero from his days managing Espanyol.

he obviously has serious quality, the reason I think hes been so ****e at qpr is because of the culture amongst the players there. Half assed effort and performance would not be accepted by MP or other team mates therefore depending on price/wages he could be a good addition.

I don't know much about him but only played 18 times for QPR this season. Anyone know why?

He's a great cultured player but QPR appear to have very little team spirit, unsurprisingly considering their general policy of signing overpaid under performers most past their best. Fact that someone didn't perform in that set-up in their first season in prem wouldn't overly worry me.

And imagine no one will be offering the QPR money as done f ck all to show he is worth it this season.

Being on a huge clubs books at young age can also get people over excited as clearly must have bucket loads of talent but application and working hard that make s you a great player. Imagine MP knows all about him though

Started well for QPR faded badly, has some quality certainly with the ball but not sure about his off the ball work. They played him out wide right a few times as well so not sure what his best position is. Would trust Pochettino though.

Certainly not worth £9 million or £60k a week but a lesser deal I think he'd be a decent option.

Wages would be very high for a player who would only offer cover for Cork & Schneiderlin.

Getting a player to add some cover & competition for them isn't the worst idea in the world though. At the moment if either gets injured or suspended, we lack anyone who could do a good job in their position. DM isn't Davis' game and JWP strikes me as a similar type of CM to Davis, with the potential to become a much better player than him.

I would be hesitant to judge him on his qpr form, as qpr have a stack of very good individual players who just don't play well together

He must have some very good attributes to be at real madrid and to be able to command that sort of fee

If the club feel than can un-qpr him he would be a good option in my opinion

He's a class act. Doesn't suit the way QPR play. He likes to have control of the ball and play at a slower tempo so he'd suit the way we play. It won't happen though. He'll go back to Spain.

That's part of the problem for me, we do not play at a slow tempo, we are constantly pressing, moving, harassing. It doesn't suit Gaston who is still adjusting to the pace of the play we are trying to impose and it will not immediately suit Granero either. It's no mistake that Steven Davis looks better in our team at times despite not having the latent ability of a Ramirez.

Don't understand this forum sometimes, there was a thread on Scott Sinclair several weeks back where it seemed 80% wanted him at the club despite the fact he probably earns 60k+ and hasn't played at all this season and in his career has cobbled together two good seasons in the Championship and Premier League yet we get linked to a player who has had a bad season but has a body of work that has seen him play nearly 70 times for Real Madrid and people don't want him

Anyone who thinks Ramirez was a bad signing should watch more of this guy. £9m and on huge wages, has been utter carp in every game for QPR.

Tbf though, you don't become a bad player over night and he looked good at Madrid. Something has been very wrong at Loftus Rd all season so perhaps a fresh start is what he needs. Same could be said for Hoilett, Park, Bosingwa etc. All would be a risk but have had better seasons in the past than the train wreck of 2012/13.

100% this.

I think he'd be a good signing. Underperforming this season, yes, but he's probably only there for the money. Pretty sure Pochettino could get him motivated again.

Having said that, the reported wages are a little daunting, as well as the fact QPR will want as much of the transfer fee back as possible.

Regardless of how good he was in the past, he's had a **** poor season and hasn't looked like he's wanted to be at QPR.

I agree you can't be that sh!t when you've played for Real, but I'm not convinced he would fit in with the philosophy or the way we play. If Poche can get him motivated and back to his best, he'd probably be a good signing, but it's not too often a player makes a bad move for huge money, goes somewhere else for less money and suddenly back to old form. Look at Adam Johnson for example. Been utter dross for Sunderland this year.

100% this.

Add another 100%.

Granero looked like QPR's only useful player when we stuffed them at their place and he didn't play 70+ times for Real Madrid because 'he's ****e'. He's actually a quality player and I'd happily have him at Saints.

To be fair to the lad he wasn't redknapp's purchase so he'd have been frozen out a bit and ignored for the new apples of redknapps eye! like most people on this forum , even the ones who seem to know everything about him,I've rarely seen him play but would have faith in poch to bring in the right players that can suit our style

His nickname is The Pirate apparently. Why do these Spanish based soccerballists insist on having these ridiculous nicknames?

It had to do with a scruffy beard he had when he first appeared in professional football.

Surprisingly, Argentine players are actually worse with that. Every average footballer in that country has a surname like he's some kind of star.

That's 1 game. Granero is normally the player who gets dragged off at HT when QPR are losing. I'm not one to trust Harry Redknapp's judgement but he can't be playing all that well if he's the first player they drag off when things are going wrong.

Once playing for Real Madrid is meaningless if you've not doing it any more. Pascal Cygan and Francis Jeffers were part of the invincible Arsenal squad, whilst Man Utd had David Bellion, Liam Miller and Eric Djemba Djemba. I wouldn't have signed any of those for Saints at the time, especially not on the £60k plus a week Granero will demand.

He has some pedigree but he was hardly a regular at Real Madrid and evetually even lost his place in midfield to to Contreau who is a left back. Mourinho did like him though.

If we want a Madrid bit-part player then we whould get Callejon who I think we were previously linted with and played a lot under Pochettino at Espanyol.

Is there any truth in this article?

Have Saints shown any interest in this player?

Is Poch actually an admirer of this player?

Has the agent started work on this players behalf?

QPR preparing to encourage interest in their playing staff?

etc etc

Looked ok from what little I have seen of him........Probably end up at that massive club down the road....PUP in the lower leagues.

Where's Flyer when you need him.....?

We paid 4m euros for him so Saints could get him for an ok fee, nothing like £6m.

Hes ok but not suited to the PL, Hes physically too slow and holds onto the ball to long and constantly gets caught in possession. Hes been out of the team for a while too and just came back to play the last game.

No tears would be shed if he left. Hes suited to a better team that has a lot of possession and time on the ball than to a non top six team that will get closed down quickly.

Ok player but not suited to Saints.

Im pretty sure a remotley interested Granero would be a fine player.. As others have said, hes played a fair amount of times for Real Madrid - no mean feat.

He probably lacks any sort of motivation, and is in and out of a god awful QPR side. A motivated and enthused player is always going to different.

Unfortunately for you we have a lot of possession and time on the ball. You don't actually know anything about saints or our style of play and your patronising attitude at the start of the season has made you look rather foolish.

Being out of the team under 'Arry doesn't mean much.

This is the footballing genius that didn't much rate Bale until BAE got injured and his hand was forced into playing him.

Actively tried to sell him.
