Our support is an embarrassment

Dare I say it but with all these JCLs in the Northam it isn't what it was. Everyonee seems to think on this forum that ST holders on the epiphany of saint supporters but it's not true. I'm not saying that every ST holder doesnt sing but can you deny that the atmosphere last year was so much better?

We have a boring middle class support, been saying that for years, I only go 3/4 times a year and that is out of love for the Saints not for the atmosphere, its crap, the Island dwellers have got it about right I hate to say.

The Dell was will always be the place where the atmosphere was, sitting down certainly does not help.

The first definition of support is to turn up and pay your money to get into the stadium !

Based on recent crowds of almost 32,000 (very close to capacity) I think that we are doing pretty well !

If you are concerned about noise level as the only criterion for 'support' then maybe you should follow the 'Fratton model' - now that is a very successful concept, I must say !!

Agree with this, though I don't think it's just this season. I used to think we had one of the best home atmospheres in the country, sadly that's no longer the case, the last few years it has declined rapidly. SMS just seems to be full of middle class yuppies these days.

West Brom's supporters were mostly seated throughout the match and put us to shame. They were probably the best set of fans I have seen this season. It was the worst atmosphere I have expereienced in the Northam for many a season. WBA scored an early goal and were so dominant that they totally silenced us. It needed us to score to liven us up, which ought not to be the case, but we never looked like scoring.

They sing, shout and scream at their players and other fans, we welcome them and offer a biscuit, its also the difference between the two cities, they are Cockneys wannabes and we are more restrained Country folk, the problem with that is Country folk outnumber the City dwellers subdue the noise, I bet my ******** to a barndance that if you put the skates in our flat pack the noise would be a lot louder, an uncomfortable truth, we go and little noise is made, a few of them go and they make a racket.

Sitting down does not create an atmosphere, in fact it restricts it, safe standing is the way to go.

We reacted well when West Brom scored first, the players didn't do their bit to lift the crowd though with no urgency. Considering we were 3-0 down not a massive amount of people left really early. I agree that the Northam atmosphere is getting ****, nowadays it seems to be the Kingsland North who try and start things off.

As for West Brom's fans, anyone can sing when their team is bossing the game. Not exactly super impressive.

No idea what's happened to our support this year. We only seem to want to sing OWTS most of the time. The Northam looks and sounds sh*t from the Itchen North, and barely any one makes any effort in the Itchen North either. WBA's support was embarrassing. Mostly sat down and doing mexican waves. Gimps.

Thought WBA support yesterday was brilliant.
I didn't realise until somebody told me that WBA gave FREE TRAVEL to yesterday's game. http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/west-bromwich-albion-fc/2013/03/09/west-brom-fans-get-free-travel-for-southampton-trip/ It appears they have been doing that once a season for the last 11 seasons and only lost once which probably makes for a party type atmosphere that they generated yesterday.

Skates, Stokies, Cardiff, Millwall, Chelsea, Everton, West Ham and Geordies all have pretty good home and away atmospheres.

and if any of those above play as bad as we did yesterday, the atmosphere is exactly the same! Especially Stoke!

I think our away support vs theirs is a fairer comparison.

I would class myself as middle class- does that mean I am not allowed to be a football fan? I didn't realise you still had to be a docker to support saints.

I probably fall into that category as well, it creates a crap atmosphere if there are too many Ruperts obviously, its very sterile thats what I am getting at.

When we are losing or struggling our support is terrible. Everyone starts with the moaning and groaning like spoilt children. When we are winning and doing well I don't have too many complaints.

This x 1000! Even during the promotion seasons the muppets behind me were whining if we hadn't scored after 5 mins

Should we ban all "middle class" and above and just let the "ordinary man" in then?

They could all wear flat caps and throw them in the air when a goal is scored

I am just saying the working mans game has become for all, the atmosphere has suffered, I dont think I am wrong.

Yes and the Tarquin, Jeremy's and Rupert's could throw a poor man on the fire when we score............................

The fact we only have a couple of decent songs really doesn't help. I don't think we have come up with anything decent since the Lambert song and in fairness that is now sung a lot more quietly than it used to be.

I take it you didn't go Everton this season! Worst atmosphere I'd ever experienced at a ground.

Also when did you last go to Chelsea....full of plastics. I live in London and go every now and then, and they are awful most weeks.

We are better than some and worst than some. Admittedly we are not as noisy as the lat couple of years but then we're not winning most games.

Was surprising at Swansea i thought we were dreadful.

Swansea fans seemed to think we were decent.

I agree that we only seem to be decent when ahead these days, apart from the second half at Fulham where we were fantastic.

Have you seen the prices?!?

You want a bunch of young passionate fans then get NC to whack in some cheap safe standing when we expand and make the tickets nice and cheap! Sorted ;)

To be fair I think we're not as bad as all that and it's a bit rich complaining about the lack of atmosphere when you only going to three matches a season ... not exactly creating much atmosphere for the other forty odd games!

Hopefully we'l stick on songs for the likes of MP or something ironic about Forren's whereabouts ...

The atmosphere hasn't been getting worse and we are no worse than most other football League grounds in the country. I went to Millwall last season and West Ham this season, neither was anything special. The acoustics in Cardiff's new stadium are pretty good but the fans in there didn't sing all that often. Goodison was like a library this season. The only other ground I've been to this year is Norwich, that was pretty quiet too.

Our support isn't an embarrassment, we pretty much fill St Mary's every game. It's up to you whether you want to sing or not, it's not a legal requirement.

It's definitely a hell of a lot worse this season than it was the last few, but i think it's largely down to JCLs coming back. Not sure about the middle class bit either, me and most of my mates are from Bevois Valley/Swathling so i'd hardly count that as middle class.

Anyway the atmosphere in the prem' is embarrassingly **** everywhere. Though i did think WBA were superb yesterday. Aside from them though i can only really think of QPR and for about 20mins Villa being any good. Even United and the Geordies who are normally class were absolute shi.t.

Saying that pretty much every away fan i've chatted to has said that St Mary's has been the loudest ground they've been to this season. Which probably comes down to first season back up thing.

If you think it's bad now btw give it two seasons and see what happens. Football atmospheres are a sad state of affairs now.

How many games have you watched at Fratton Park in the last 5 years?

Poor old Baz seems to have been misled by another Portsmyth. Pompey fans are no different to the majority of football fans in the amount of noise they create. I've been down to Sh*thole Park three times this season (I didn't pay for a ticket, that should be stressed). First game of the season they were pretty good (well, until Barney nodded one in, ROFL). The other two games they were poor; against Swindon I was in the Swindon end and barely heard a thing from the home lot.

But they do love to perpetuate this myth that they're the bestest, loudest and pashunest, and Baz has fallen for it hook, line and sinker.

Won't get many better travelling fans than the Baggies yesterday. But that's often what happens away from home when your team is doing well. Lest we forget we've had Swansea fans, QPR fans and others on here and their own sites saying that the travelling Saints fans were the best to have visited all season. WBA was a quiet day for the fans, and a let down by the players. Sh*t happens.

Throw in the fact that wolves were losing too. Spent more time singing about their relegation than anything else.

I did have to laugh at that, to be honest. A good mate of mine is a Wolves fan and is obviously feeling the pain at the moment with their plight. During the game I was trying to get 3G signal on my phone to check their score, but to no avail. Right on cue the Baggies piped up with "The sh*t are losing 2-0"! Good update.

Is that a problem really?

Is there some rule or code of conduct that forbids any human being of going to a football game? Should someone who owns a business have football websites and TV shows blocked?

You have some very thick and ignorant complexes in your mind, sort it out.

I think we need to have a little think about moving the away fans. The atmosphere at all of the games in which we haven't been winning has been woeful and we've been completely outsung. Since opposition fans are bringing 3000 to SMS there is no interaction between the Northam/Itchen North.

Essentially the away fans split our two main bases of support rather than being drowned out in between them as was the original idea.
