Deserves his own thread - having a great season and seems to be improving under MPo

- Special mention to Burnley FC too. Having a great season and should take alot of praise for Jrod's rise

Well done Rodriguez & Burnley

Welbeck is confirmed as out accordingly to my pops, so Jrod to start?

Has been mentioned. Would be great to see, especially with Adam.

We saw how well Welbeck fed from Lambert's delivery. Jay would also benefit from having him on the pitch.... It would be amazing to see a Saints front three up front for England.

Surely you'd think, to see them at their best Roy will have them all on the pitch at the same time. However this is England were talking about.

Agree Glasgow

Is it just me that is fearful of all three picking up an injury in the England game?

Just enjoy the ride while it lasts

We are Southampton the greatest team the world has ever seen

Have we ever had 3 players playing for England at once ??

MLG posted something along the lines of this last happening in 1986.

Yes:

29th January 1986 - Peter Shilton, Mark Wright & Danny Wallace played in England's 4-0 win vs Egypt

Funny, I don't think he's having a particularly great season for us. I think he's done well over the last few games but I think we've seen him play better in spells last year. I would describe his form as sporadic although there are some signs that at last he might be getting to grips with our formation and his role in it. Here's hoping it continues.

I think he's been picked for England based mainly on potential rather than form and of course because he play in the trendy wide role in the 3 in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

I agree with others that he is a physically fine specimen.

If we ever get to see a J Rod fulfil his maximum potential in a Saints shirt it will be something to behold, I'm sure. I hope we do, he seems like a good hard working lad.

Announced his retirement. Such a shame his injury impacted his career when he was just starting to blossom. After a slow start really kicked on his second season and looked like he was going to progress into and England regular. Spurs were interested and we tired to get a deal done with Harry Kane coming other way

Favourite moment his goal when we beer Fulham 3-0 at craven cottage.

Was that the one where Lambert picked him out with an outrageous long ball from the edge of our own box?

Poetry in motion that was.

Yes that’s the one, amazing ball from Lambert, he was on the left wing, cut inside and curled it top corner in front of the away end, must have had 5-6,000 in there as the neutral bit was 70% Saints as well

Yeah that injury was devastating. You can't help but wonder what could have been for him if that hadn't happened. I remember watching him when he finally returned after what felt like years of setbacks, and he looked like he was running in wet concrete. It was so sad to see because you just knew he was never going to get back or even close to his pre-injury level.

Still had a decent enough career though, and seemed a genuinely good lad.

I think he was out for two years and yes, never looked like getting close to the level he was at. It was pretty innocuous injury too an awkward landing away at Man City I think it was. He was improving every week at that time too after a pretty slow start, had just got into the England squad, quick, good all round player, bit of strength and a very good finisher. Like you say always seemed a decent down to earth lad.

Wasn’t it 2013/14 season ? I recall at one point there was talk of him going to the World Cup along with Lambert and Lallana.

Had he done so then following form he probably wouldn’t have started 2014/15 with us.

I remember it vividly. He jumped to get to the ball and over-extended his leg. His ACL went in mid air and he was screaming in pain before he even landed 😥

I had forgotten just how good he was in his prime for us. Very unlucky what happened to him - the levels he could have hit. The pace, strength/bravery/determination, and finishing in some of those clips was special.

Pre-injury he was excellent and I liked the way he struck a ball - one of those signings where a team brings in the best Championship talent and it proves a success, much like Bowen for West Ham. Sadly the injury meant he was never the same, which is a shame for him as he could have been an England staple.

One of my favourite away games ever that. 3 English goal scorers, all starting to be in the conversation for England call ups and Saints playing great football. And like you say, really good Saints end as well with taking over most of the ‘neutral’ bit.

Lots of nice accolades about J-rod in this thread, and I'd like to add one more.

Of all the signings over the time I have supported Saints, his is my absolute favorit.

Many of you will remember, the inside mole at the hotel where it was set to happen. A sneaky peak from behind a tree, back when that was cool! We broke the news before the media even had a sniff.

I was already really excited for his arrival, but after that reveal, and him doing really well for us, it pushed it into legendary status for me.

Great memories.

Yeah that was a beautiful goal. That turn and volley against Bournemouth on 5 mins in that video is a bit special as well.

For the Chelsea away game where he scored after 13 seconds the team was: Boruc, Shaw, Lovren, Fonte, Clyne, Schneiderlin, Wanyama, Rodriguez, Lallana, JWP and Osvaldo, with Lambert and Davis coming off the bench. That was such an exciting side, especially the way Poch had us playing. Square pegs in square holes, brilliantly managed and quality all the way through. Good times.

That Fulham goal ❤️

As others said, really bad injury - which was such a shame.  Didn’t he have an op on his ACL and then got a really bad infection?

Was at that game - sat in the so-called neutral section.  Superb goal.  Seemed to stick it in effortlessly.  Seem to remember 3 goals in 10 mins or so in the second half.  One of my favourite away days.  Pleasant location, friendly locals, lots of places to get food and a drink.  And Saints turning it on in style, with J-Rod, Lambert and Lallana excellent.

Happy retirement J-Rod.  Thanks for some good memories.

Great day out that was at Fulham. Result obviously helped.

Remember how annoyed I got watching the highlights that night that the commentator called it "a clearance from Lambert that might work out well".

I dunno, when he went up for that ball I winced as it didn't look like he was coming down cleanly!

That injury ....was a tragedy for a fine player who had found his best form and already had a seat

on the plane for the impending World Cup competition and many of us really felt the pain, too.

Although he fought his way back to fitness  Jay would never regain the level of form he had at his peak.

Hope he finds some consolation now that he is back " in civvy street" where only fans might recall him.

That goal at Fulham was sensational. The neutral end resembled Dellhurst park that day and we had the perfect angle. The pass from Lambert isn't done justice from the normal camera angle and JRod's finish was sublime.

Congrats on a good career lad, such a shame you never found out how far you could go due to that injury.
