Saints 1 Espanyol 1

Perhaps Isgrove is on the verge of a loan (or just injured).

McCarthy was in the Europa League match day squad rather than Stephens and Turnbull on Thursday, with Stephens at the time close to a loan to Middlesbrough and it seems Turnbull close to returning to Swindon.

Are we Chelsea in Disguise :scared:

Will be interesting to see if Caulker can operate on the left of centre with Jose on the right. From what I know, Caulker has tended to be right sided (or maybe Jose will play left).

Pity we don't still have Osvaldo, he could take on Espanyol single handed based on their display at Reading :-)

Wonder what the future holds for Isgrove? Signed the contract last season but not in squad or featuring with first team squad. Seems odd....

Featured in every pre-season match up to and including KVV Quick. Not seen since, suggests possibly an injury, perhaps just not room in the squad for today. I would guess whether he goes out on loan or stays with us may depend a lot on our progression through to the Group stages of the Europa. He won't get many games next season otherwise (unless he plays as an over age player in the u21s).

From last nights game v Reading!!!

67mins

The battle of the Mad Stad

Wow, this game has just exploded into life.

Jordan Obita has been sent off for Reading, as has Alvaro Gonzalez for Espanyol.

It was all started by a really hefty challenge by Obita which lead to an almighty flare-up involving pretty much everyone on the pitch and the substitutes. That wasn't pretty. Things have calmed down now but both teams are down to 10 men.

73mins

Friendly? What friendly?

The two managers are now going at it.

Steve Clarke angrily pointing and shouting at the Espanyol boss after a bad tackle on Sa leaves the striker prone on the turf.

The fourth official has to step in.

Once that has calmed down, Royals make a change. Stephen Quinn goes off, on comes Hope Akpan.

Hope everybody keeps a cool head today. Certainly don't want any silly injuries or suspensions!!! Thegame ended 0-0 ( 1-1 on Red Cards!!)

Alvaro playing today!

39 year old KD couldn't get down quick enough? Who would have thought it.

Having seen the replay he should have saved it. But we all know he isnt good enough and hasn't ever been in the PL.

Still very weak at GK beyond our no1.

Gazza should be the no2 and should be playing today.

STILL need another keeper.

Of course Davis was woeful, he has been for at least a year now, too slow. That said, the defending was appalling, leaving Sevilla acres of space to fire home. Targett lost out to a header in the centre of the box, but the whole defence had been pulled over to the right leaving Targett horribly exposed and no-one covering their right.

Gazzaniga has done little (if anything) wrong in pre-season. It was Gazzaniga on the bench vs Vitesse Arnhem, so perhaps he is second choice.

True but when the pressure has been on at PL level he has never been able to hack it.

Gazzaniga probably the least reliable 2nd keeper in the league. Certainly in the bottom 3.

Really don't see why we're not after a young keeper as backup/for the future. Keepers need game time to improve but since we're in three cups this season it's not like the opportunity isn't there. We're the best club in the country for developing young players and getting them a reputation, so it's not like we should struggle to attract any. I'm assuming the club still think Gazza is filling that role, but he's nowhere near good enough for us.

Ha so he was out of position then? Great!

it is going to happen.

Fonte is the only real starter playing

it is to be expected in pre season when we have to change half the defence every summer...we were alright last year

it is the absence of morgan that will hurt us more, IMO

Perhaps having worked with David Watson for a year he has improved. A lot of Gazzaniga's problems when he played for the 1st team came from poor decision making (and that then affected his confidence) which can be taught, he has a lot of other good attributes to be a decent keeper.
