Stoke City?

Believed that Manager Pulis has strong connections to Southampton family and all that.

Married to a Southampton girl, so I am told? Secret clubs even?

Has a young son who is an up and coming footballer waiting to explode onto the scene...

Is being held back by the Saints not giving the yuf a chance in the first team.

How much did we actually pay....yes we paid for his transfer as part of Davies deal, before you start little Pixies.

  • 1 year later...

What went wrong for Fuller here?

In Stoke, pretty much every Stoke fan seems to think he's their best player of the last few decades and he's consistently excellent, even when not scoring.

Were his knees really plaguing him that much at Portsmouth and Saints?

Sorry, forgot...Mr Pulis if you really loved Southampto, loan us a few players for nothing.

Not Pericard, ideally some that can play at Back or up front...alright, just some players.

We can loan you some young talent....Pulis, Gasmi, Smith, Spiderman,,,,Fair swap though.

Which, I suppose, shows how much Morgan has improved in the last year or so, as I wouldn't want him loaned out now! He's not been consistant this season, but he's certainly improved playing in a better side.

I think he's been one of our best players this season. Having said that though, i'm not sure that any players in our squad at the moment could be described as being one of our 'worst' players.

(Although i'm sure some of you pessimists will have a go anyway...)

He was out of form here in an uncreative team and for some reason Burley decided he would rather have BWP.

Yup so out of form he had scored 6 in 6 when we let him go ??

I would have thought he was earning too much, and that is why he went. But then i know at pompey he was on a pay to play so i just don't know.

Weird decision for me.

Don't get me wrong, I wanted to keep him and his form was good at the end of the season. Can't believe we got rif of him and Oakley in favour of BWP and Wright. That was however his 'Saganowski moment' in an otherwise unproductive season.

It didn't help that our fans were on Fullers back the entire time he was here. He had the boo boys on his back all the time, on and off the pitch.

I remember an interview with him post-match, after being boo'd at the start of a game then bagging a couple of goals. He look utterly fed up and just said he was 'working his ******** off' to do well and would see what happens. He left shortly afterwards.

Fuller was very good for us and our results were far better when he played. However, this was at that weird time when everybody said we needed a million pound striker and we got Fuller for 95 000 from Pompey. Therefore it was decided he was derided before he even started. He wasn't a high scorer, but he did play well.

Holy thread resurection Batman!

It was either that or face the condescending ST Landrew admonishing posters for not remembering threads one year ago let alone a month. You need to remember most of us posters are mere mortals and Diplodocus is either super human in his memory or is in the middle of some major catching up.

Can someone explain what it is with ex saints players and Stoke!

Rory Delap

Andrew Davies

Rick Fuller

Danny Higginbotham

Vincent Pericard

and now

James Beattie!

Sheffield United have just accepted a £2.5m bid

Andrew Davies excepted, they were all rubbished on Saints forums as not good enough for us (like quite a few ex Saints now playing in higher leagues).

There is always SOMEONE to "rubbish" even the best players, but in each case there is some logical explanation.

Delap was ignored by successive managers, who played him in a utility role to cover injuries everywhere in the team, hence he never had a regular spot. He was mercilessly criticised (by well-known contributors on this site) for his " useless " long throws, but which Pulis (senior) made him into a terror force on his own. Quite simply, we never had strikers good enough to convert his efforts into goals. Fuller was a former 'arry favourite, good but overpaid and under played. Like Higginbotham both were worthy of better and didn't want CCC football. Andrew Davies (a good defender) was desperately sold (by RL) for survival money. Only Everton ever thought that Beattie was real Prem. material, and few have been convinced - even now, but he had his best days with us. The unfortunate Pericard may have talent but has been a " misfit " in every club he's moved to.

Many players find success in one certain team at one time, Pulis (snr) - who was a candidate for Saints job ten years ago - has found the right combination and has a respectable League position to prove it.

Holy thread resurection Batman!

Especially as it was a duplicate thread from Jan 2009 which lasted less than a day...

...the other thread on the link is far more informative (i.e. it has my full list of ex-Saints at Stoke in Jan 09, not the abridged list here...).

If it's not too boring to answer the original question, it's the red and white stripes. They miss us and it comforts them. ;)

This.

It's the same reason Beats went to Sheff United and KJ went to Sunderland. Once a player wears red & white stripes, they never want to wear anything else!

Seabourne from Exeter is another... and haven't we had the occassional player from PSV or Ajax in the late 90's early 00's?

See.. conclusive proof! :D

And probably Davies was not the best player of that lot anyway

Well no, but he was one of the best in our (bad) side at the time, while the likes of Delap and Fuller clearly weren't, which bought him a lot of affection.

Why am I perpetuating this crappy thread anyway?

Which pretty much proves that you should disregard the opinion of every poster on this board when it comes to players ;-) (Not that that will stop us from expressing such opinions)

Fuller was good, after his loan spell at Ipswich he came back for the last 15 games having lost about 4 stone in weight. he then went an scored about 7 in 7 and RL didn't renew his contract.

No, Burley sold him. Another baffling decision on his part.
