What I find really odd in all the Fernandes business is that Man U haven't been in for him. Amorim knows him, he came up in the Sporting system so he'll actually know how to play in that 3-4-3 he insists on, and they can afford him. Wouldn't be surprised if the publicity about the fee is basically his agent issuing a come-and-get-him to Utd or other clubs.

Been reported he's already done part of his medical yesterday evening so would be surprised

We typically give more assistance to the opposition than our own players.

Yes, it relies on our strikers returning to their previous champ levels. I’m hoping having better and different creators in a 4-2-3-1 that we get more output. Remains a worry.

I'm concerned about that too, but the reality is that it's very hard to bring talent that will possibly/probably/hopefully good enough for the PL while you are a championship club. The big clubs have all the young talent and that leaves lessor leagues - which we seem to be working on. So for now, maybe buying championship level talent is the only way forward. We really must get promoted this season or next, otherwise the budget will be tiny compared to other relegated sides.

Ultimately never expected Fernandes to be here this season, think it's just the late nature of it that makes it feel a lot more disappointing.

Azaz and Fellows would both be really strong signings. Can't say I know anything about Jander myself but I do know a Nurnberg fan who said "Thought he'd do way better than you, figured he'd go to Bundesliga".

I'm pretty confident that Archer and Stewart will come good when we fix the quality of supply from midfield / the wings. Yet to be convinced by Downs, but time will tell.

Think the main concern about Fellows and Azaz is that we're getting 2 players whose ceiling is probably the top of the championship, arguably a bit like Downes and THB - 20 PL teams have already looked and said nope, we have better already or they're not good value. Azaz to me has a better chance as his game seems to have more variety, if you look at Fellows' highlights his assists are basically all the same assist again and again, step over, go to the byline and cross right footed. I don't think he gets away with that in the PL.

Yes, you can say we have to buy for this level, but as we saw with those 2, the money you spend on 'marquee' champ-level players then holds you back if you get promoted and you have to replace them.

So, it sounds like before the deadline we're getting Azaz, Jander and an unconfirmed player (likely to be Guilavogui) in the next 48 hours and working on a deal for Fellows over the next few days.

Bung Spertsyan on that, get rid of a couple of deadwood players like Smallbone, Aribo and Edozie and it will look OK.

I think on this front going to the French, German, and other leagues is by far the better bet. Can anyone think of an established or 'marquee' championship player who wasn't just a big club loanee who then went on to tear up the PL recently? I honestly can't...

That's a good question. Obviously our lads Bale, Lallana, Morgan, JRod and Clyne from way back when. Zaha from the same period too. More recently...Stones, Madison, Watkins, Ezze.

Goalkeeper is still a massive weakness too. 

So even if Azaz, Fellows, Jander get done, if that's it for the window then as far as I'm concerned the strikers and goalkeeping positions have still been totally misjudged/ neglected for a team apparently aiming for automatic promotion. You'd have to be a total spreadsheet nerd with no understanding of football to think that squad was strong enough overall for automatic.

a quick google search shows that WBA were wanting about 20m for Fellows, Leeds and Everton were interested. You'd think if we're negotiating with WBA then we've been told he wants to come here

Personally I’m not expecting players to be better than those we are selling but I am quietly hopeful about the squad building taking place. On paper (yes, I know) it feels like we have cleared a lot of big earners and identified players for specific roles with a consistent set of attributes (though Azaz is apparently not as physical as others).

A transfer window is only ever really proved good or bad at the end of the season but I would be optimistic if we can get Fellows, Azaz and Jander over the line.
