I would love to hear a view of Downs ability from one of his team mates who see him day in day out in training. Unfortunately it's highly unlikely to happen unless it's very positive comments which you do occasionally here from players about new members of the team.

I don't understand why he was on the bench yesterday if WS never had any intention on using him. The lads confidence must be rock bottom already and then having to watch yesterday a game that was crying out for someone to lead the line only for him to be totally ignored.

Now i'm not saying for one minute he should have been brought on, so far from what i have seen i completely agree with most on here he's shockingly bad but that again highlights the glaringly obvious, why was he taking up a bench spot?

Indeed... Oyekunle should have been on the bench... Would have been great experience for him and could've had a 'nothing to lose' 10 minute cameo appearance at the end which wouldn't have done his development any harm.

Having a player on the bench with no intention of being him on* is a complete waste of an opportunity for someone else.

(* That said, I would imagine the plan was to bring Downs on if we were comfortably in the lead towards the end of the game for a 'no pressure' confidence building stint... Just one flaw with that plan... Saints? Comfortable lead? Yeah, that flaw... )

It was quite amusing to hear the Sky commentators not understanding why he hadnt been bought on given his height.....obviously hadn't seen any of his earlier performances !

Yes but it's not for the club hierarchy to be swayed by fan reaction, it's about being above that and doing what required for the team. Say what you like about Cortese but do you think he'd give a fuck what the fans think about a decision? Do you think he'd be staying with Still in the current scenario or he'd have allowed us to go into a season woefully weak in key positions?

Suspect he would fit the team quite well

infact, we could have sign Kieffer Moore, Ollie McBurnie and Carlton Morris for less than it cost for Downs.

He will score and contribute much much much more than Downs will this season.

given we now have to apparently find a new way of playing now our injury stricken big lad is out for month, and all can see that under this manager we need a big presence upfront, yes, Moore would have been a decent equation for relative pennies.

we signed Billy Sharp to do a job for a couple of months, Moore would have been the same

he has more goals so far this season than Arma, Archer, Scienza, Fellows and Downs combined, and has started the season as one of the best rated players (not just as a forward)

would we be better with him available over Downs? 100%. Pretty sure he would have started for us yesterday, or at least come off the bench.

Not at all, just an obvious player who would have been available to us, for a fraction of the fee compared to Downs, who would have made an immediate impact.

is he a good player? Not particularly but he would have been a decent for a season given the manager needs a lump. 

Carlton Morris would be another, but Moore stood out given he dominated our defence when he played

Yep, players is relegated sides can be decent. Morris would have been miles better than Downs (for a fraction of the cost)

Downs is our classic “one for the future” or “resale value” the problem is we needed a striker for today in the here and now and we have done for several seasons. How much of the 7M do you think we will get back after DD shows the world he can’t make in Championship football. We’ve ended up with

I think over the next couple of weeks Downes will start, he’ll have one bounce in off him and then he’ll get a few.

I’m not saying he’ll be prolific in anyway, but it’s similar to the team as a whole.

We’ll score one or two goals or get maybe a couple of wins in a row and it’ll click.
