Horrendous news, what a signing he was. Did so much to put Southampton on the map.

He'll never be forgotten at any of his clubs. Loved his football and attitude.

Watching King Kev week in week out from under the West Stand as a 13/14 year old kid are memories that have and will continue to stay with me forever.

Great memories of the Kevin Keegan Soccer School as a nipper. Full red, white and blue KK kit and black Keegan Kid boots with orange stripes. Thought I was the bees knees!

Which shows you how little they knew about what made him tick. It was the challenge that made the success that much better - the move to Hamburg, to us, or to Newcastle were all unusual. He was happy to take the roads less travelled, and that made all the difference to those clubs.

The press conference at the pub that night to announce we had signed him was just amazing. Never to be forgotten. Little old Saints had signed Kevin Keegan. I was 14. What a time to be a Saints fan. RIP Kevin. Thanks for the memories.

RIP Keegan - a true English legend. Disgusting that the BBC managed to completely overlook his time at Saints in this evenings news piece.

I had never watched him play, far, far too young for that. But he's revered and so many have great stories to tell of him, so I've read up on him. To think we once had players of such a calibre sign for us. RIP

I'd like to pay my own respects if I may.     When did he join Southampton, 1980 or thereabouts.    I was at early primary school back then and don't really recall his time there but can imagine older fans of the club must possess great fondness and excitement of his time involved over there. 

His passing seems too sudden.  The cancer news was only released to the public a few months back but even now it all feels too quick to take in.    You're right when the BBC didn't give a mention, I saw the omission myself.   That's not fair at all allowing all other involving club names Keegan was with but leaving Saints out.    Don't know or understand the reasoning behind that.    Someone should ideally offer an apology.  

Take the opportunity to provide condolences to Kevin's immediate family and those closest.  Game lost a true great today. I only wish I were a few years older to have seen him play like some can remember and allow proper plaudits and recognition the man would deserve.

I must have seen around half of Keegan’s 80 games (42 goals) for Saints, and as a player it was like watching a lightning bolt, pure magnetism, a shining star - 5ft 8ins but a giant on the pitch. The ball stuck to him, was drawn to him, powerful in possession, shades of Maradona in that sense. The first superstar player of the modern era, and he was an Englishman. Twice European footballer of the year after becoming superlative at Hamburg, and in his second reign in 1980 he signs for Southampton. Nobody saw that coming, a McMenemy masterstroke, and every Sotonian knows where they heard the news. Saints profile went through the roof, and had we invested in the defence and keeper, got Shilton a season early, we would have been challenging for the league and won silverware. Keegan was right in his assessment of that, but watching him as a fulcrum and heartbeat of that brilliant slick Southampton side was incredible, a fantastic and one off memory. After he left football and went on the corporate circuit lots of people I know came into contact with Keegan and all would speak about him as down to earth, cheerful, kind, he would give the public time. Had he been in the current England side in his pomp we would have likely won the world cup in the last week, that good. RIP King Kev, a unique talent and genuine man of the people!

After the home leg of the league cup first leg tie v Watford – the one when Nick Holmes scored from the half-way line – and in which Kevin Keegan went off injured in the second half, I waited in The Dell car park after the match for autographs and was the first one to get to KK’s car. Being first there I got the chance to ask him a question and asked “Do you think you’ll be fit for the second leg Kev?”. Having won 4-0 he responded “I don’t think they’ll need me son, do you?”. As Saints fans of a certain age will know we certainly did need him - we lost the second leg 5-1 in normal time and 7-1 after extra time! As had been documented elsewhere, Kevin hung around to sign 60 or so autographs that night (him using my green Pentel pen for every autograph was a great source of pride in my teenage brain!).
 

What a legend Kevin was. An incredible player that I feel honoured to have seen play in those two years with us – perhaps the  greatest two years as the Saints fan for me, watching that star-studded team – and seemingly an outstanding human being. RIP King Kev😇

With me Dad coming from Armthorpe, there's a special place in our hearts for KK in our house. . Keegan Kid boots were a must and I have a pair of match worn Patrick socks that I like to think he wore. He was simply brilliant. His touch, movement and work rate endured him to all fans. I'd really of liked to see him be our manager. Not sure he could emulate his Newcastle feet, but it would have been nice to see him try.

Many, many moons ago I was at a Bobby Charlton soccer school in Southampton with a bunch other kids. News quickly got out that Kevin Keegan was training with the club nearby. Then as soon as you would know it a massive queue of keen kids formed up a stair way and over the other side, with Keegan taking time with each kid (there must have been over 100) to sign an autograph, me included. I was struck then by what a great guy he was. So kind with his time. And that seems to have been a consistent factor across his life. It also coincided with him in THAT team, in my view the best ever, with England players everywhere. Happy memories.

Keegan was a one-off and I have been strangely emotionally hit by his death.
