for_heaven's_Saint Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere, but a friend from work claims that he saw Matt Holland at sms yesterday. Ewell Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 I think he would be a very good signing. He could be our Matty Oakley in league 1. i.e. a class above whose experience allows him to dominate and dictate the pace of a game. Along with Murty good captain material too! Matthew Le God Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 His legs and engine have gone for a holding midfielder. I hope to be proved wrong but at 35 I think it may be too late for him in such a role.
S-Clarke Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 He's exactly what we need in midfield! He obviously isn't the youngest anymore but he still has alot to offer, esp. at league 1 level IMO. He'd compliment Gillett perfectly, someone who you can trust with the ball...and someone who has the ability to lead from the centre. If we can get experienced leaders right down the spine of the team then we will do fine...supplement that with the likes of Lallana/Mills/James/Morgan/Gillett and you have a pretty good team. I had hoped we would sign him a few years back when GB was in charge, but we didn't...

The Kraken Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 I doubt he could manage more than 15 games in a season Perhaps a bit harsh, but on the right lines. According to their OS he started only 17 league games for Charlton last year. Hardly the type of signing to base our team around.

Channon's Sideburns Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 Has shown class in the past. We need someone who will put their foot on the ball and then organise things. Matty Holland could be our new Jimmy Case. I said as much on the HCDAJFU thread... ;-)

AlfredKo Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 Should we after another free agent and ex-charlton, the China skipper Zheng Zhi? He is a free agent and had trial with us in 2004. In addition, if we are after experienced players. How about Yorke, Sun Ji Hai, Radhi Jaïdi, etc.

shurlock Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 (edited) Should we after another free agent and ex-charlton, the China skipper Zheng Zhi?. seen him a number of times - think he is an excellent midfielder. a very good passer of the ball and, unlike schneiderlin, not afraid to get stuck in. surprised a premiership side didnt snap him up when charlton first went down. not surprisingly, spent alot of his latter time at charlton, either injured or sulking.... derry Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 If we want to play a front sweeper he has to have a pass completion rate approaching 100% not 10% and be astute enough to not give too many free kicks away. HCDAJFU.

SuperMikey Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 No thanks, we have enough older players in the squad. We need players in the peak of their careers, 25-30, to get us out of this league properly and quickly. We need to build, not sign players who we can only realistically squeeze another half season out of. Never really liked Holland in the first place either! Andy_Porter Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 haha this seesm to be the case not bad IF true IMO what I would like is ENERGY in the middle of the park though Gillett, Gobern and James. I'd prefer to get an experienced midfielder who will chip in with 10 goals a season. Matty Holland will just be another slightly more talented Paul Wotton. Schneiderlin looked a fair bit better yesterday as well, I was gobsmacked when he actually won a sliding tackle! The last thing we need is a 35 year old holding midfielder imo. Hopkins Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 Wouldn't be ideal and I doubt Pardew would sign him as only a player. A player/coach could be possible though as I have no doubts he'd be wanting to go into coaching very shortly. Don't see him ever being employed by this club soley as a player. Miltonaggro Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 Despite last season there is a possibility that Holland has another good season left in him, as per the great Jimmy Case or Alan Ball who were both doing wonders for Saints at 35. It might be down to motivation and whether the player is up for a final hurrah in what should be a very strong side in division 3. A motivated Matt Holland would be a good aquisition IMO... SFC Forever Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 With Murty and Perry close to earning their zimmer frames do we really need another candidate for oldest player in the team and or league. We need a big strong midfield general but not only that, he must be able to move above snails pace, ie Wotton.
Polaroid Saint Posted 20 July, 2009 Share Posted 20 July, 2009 35 is, quite simply, NOT too old to play football at this, or indeed any other, level. If he is fit it really doesn't matter how old he is. There are dozens of examples of footballers (athletes) playing at their peak at that age. Whether or not he has the talent and drive is another matter and nothing to do with age. Personally I'm one of the ones who wanted him to come 'back in day' to partner Prutton in midfield. so, I guess shows what little I know ;-)
AlfredKo Posted 20 July, 2009 Share Posted 20 July, 2009 Come on you reds! This is league 1, not the premiership. Age is not important, it is not even important in the championship at all. How much good football can you play is much more vital. Darren Moore, Kevin Phillips, Perry and Yorke, Jaidi are all old pros but they can easily beat our first team all ends up. Too many people are mixed up the awful old players with the high quality old players. They think that Wotton and Darren Moore are at the same level which is absolute garbage. Hand break on, skid violently, end up facing other direction.... They're all too old, it's like Dad's Army out there, chuck the young'uns on FFS. Who would you rather have alongside Gillett - Holland or Wotton?

CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 20 July, 2009 Share Posted 20 July, 2009 Matt Holland certainly was a decent Premier League player a few years ago - but his manifest inability to merit a regular place in last seasons awful Charlton team indicates he's almost certainly past it now I'd suggest . It's a trap we can all so easily fall into , we hear of a player being linked with our club , we remember how good they were in their prime and suddenly HCDAJFU ! - it ain't necessarily so . Unfortunately for every 1 Chris Perry out there you will find 5 Jamie Redknapp's who's body's are just no longer up to the demands of professional football anymore , Exhibit No 1 for the prosecution being a tape of Mark Hughes playing for us in 1998 . ericofarabia Posted 20 July, 2009 Share Posted 20 July, 2009 Haven't we been linked with him approximately every season since 1997? We don't want to rush into things Don't forget the club have been very busy over the last few years trying to sign Rudi Whilst agreeing he is the sort of player we should be looking for, I don't think he is the right one. I was hoping Wotton was going to be able to fill that roll last season, but fell well short of the mark. Maybe a revamped Jason Euell, or even a recall for Rudi and put him in a midfield slot
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 20 July, 2009 Share Posted 20 July, 2009 Rather not to be honest. Never rated him, always flattered ti deceive. Too old and engine has gone now. No creativity, can't pass, can't shoot, no energy. Just because we're in League 2 it does not mean we have to sign someone like Holland.
The Godfather Posted 20 July, 2009 Share Posted 20 July, 2009 Do we really need him? He would only take a place ahead of Gillett or other midfielders we have in that position already. I would like decent creative centre midfielder but not Holland.
