Bailey Posted 18 November, 2009 Share Posted 18 November, 2009 Have heard a few bits of interesting 'gossip' that I thought were worth sharing, so have a read and discuss! Alan Pardew has been looking into the possibility of replacing Marek Saganowski with Cardiff's Warren Feeney. MS is almost certain to leave when the window re-opens, be it on loan or permanently, and Feeney is becoming increasingly frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities at Cardiff. Exeter are hoping to sign Saints' defender Olly Lancashire on a permanent deal. Grimsby remain keen, but the uncertainty surrounding their managerial position means a long-term transfer there is unlikely. Simon Gillett is almost certain to join Doncaster Rovers on a permanent basis after impressing Sean O'Driscoll during his loan stint in Yorkshire. And finally, Saints are working hard to extend Neal Trotman's loan deal until the end of the season, but Preston are proving to be difficult to deal with. As it stands, he is to return to Deepdale in January, but 'sources close to the club' are hopeful that a deal can be tied up. That's all folks! Read it, take it in, believe it, ignore it, do whatever you want with it, just don't shoot the messenger!
niceandfriendly Posted 18 November, 2009 Share Posted 18 November, 2009 Cheers. Interesting about Feeney, his goal scoring record isn't the best but I would certainly give him a fair chance judging Pardews previous signings, who have all been successful thus far. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Feeney
chrisobee Posted 18 November, 2009 Share Posted 18 November, 2009 It's really a given that there will be comings and goings in January. As discussed elsewhere we need another quality defensive midfielder and if Trotman does not stay then clearly a replacement is needed. My mind goes back a long way to the last time we got promoted in 1977/78. It was absolutely no coincidence that we signed Alan Ball in January 1977 and then in the close season Chris Nicholl, Mick Pickering ( who became the CB pairing) and Phil Boyer ( albeit as a replacement for Micky Channon though my view now as it was then he needed a fresh challenge). The spine of the team strenthened immensely and though clearly we are never going to sign players of that calibre the principle is the same. Lawrie Mac knew what was needed and hopefully Pardew will follow suit. I really think our promotion chances this season are very slim so to me it makes sense to look to next season though of course we need to keep stability this season. So I'd hope for a couple of permanent signings as opposed to players on loan though of course our loan signings have been good.

Of course L1 2009 -can't be compared with L. Mac Div.1 side in the late 70's but the principle is the same. The likes of Jaidi and Connolly are experienced internationals with Prem. background. Their big-time careers are over but at this level they are a great asset. Later replies on this thread also name Warren Feeney and Ben Thatcher are likely loans /signings in January. Whether such signings will be enough for a play-off spot or not we'll see in April, but it certainly gives a good basis for team building in the future. One thing that Lawrie Mac suceeded with was the integration of younger players at a steady rate; Steve Williams, Nick Holmes, Stokes, Waldron, Moran, G.Baker and the Wallaces. They all succeeded when surrounded by top players. However, it's a mistake throwing in too many inexperienced youngsters all at once.(ala Double Dutch experiment). At the moment, we have four who have " qualified in "; Lallana, James, Schneiderlin, Mills (plus loan Antonio) is really about the limit. Others new players who have 100 /150 + games under their belt are more routine types and have learnt a lot. Promotion or not; these "new" stars will be great encouragement for our promising juniors. Alanh Posted 18 November, 2009 Share Posted 18 November, 2009 I'm not overly concerned if Trottman goes back. He's done well and both Saints and him have benefited from the loan deal but at the moment I'd pick Thomas ahead of him and I'm pretty sure it would be possible to pick up a comparable CB, and ideally one with a bit more composure on the ball. I also agree with everyone who is advocating a new DM in January. Someone who can do tohe job Wotton has been doing but with a better range of passing would be a great addition to the squad. Or, have you forgotten?! At 20 years old, you can see if they're going to make it or not. He, sadly, doesn't have the key attributes to make a good centre half: Positioning, Heading, Tracking, Anticipation and reading of the game. All, imho, awful. eelpie Posted 19 November, 2009 Share Posted 19 November, 2009 Suggest an attitude problem and concerning that he’s not played for the 1st team OR the reserves yet! May offer some backup – no more imo I agree. Surely a feature of this season is that players with attitude problems like BWP, Dyer and others are no longer here. And we have an enormous squad of players including a good number who aren't going to get anywhere near the first team squad. AP, earlier in the season, said that there are too many here for him to give enough attention to during training, and the squad was smaller then. We have thirty nine players, enough for a league of their own (not a bad idea actually). Idle hands can cause mischief, and it is a miracle that we have such a seemingly settled and positive team spirit in such a large squad. Thatcher doesn't like watching from the sidelines, and he could be the person that rocks the boat. Excuse the analogy, but we ain't out of the rapids yet. January is going to be interesting. But only AP knows how many of our loanee crew he will have to replace come January, not us.

The drawn matches alone represent "dropping" Fourteen points We HAVE made great progress I agree, but I do not think we will be "flirting with the playoffs" Sit back and make a realistic assessment.
