Pre-match build-up on BW site.

Interesting comments from Kevin Davies.

Do we play the 1st team to try to get 'in the groove' or not?

I hope he doesn't though. I don't see any value in this game or progression in the cup; Saturday's game is much more important.

Maybe play some of those who need a bit of sharpness and/or fitness (RL, Punch, Seaborne, Dickson), give Guly a try out, but other than that I'd fill it with fringe players (Bart, Wotton, AOC, Holmes, Mills, Martin etc) and see what happens. Let the rest of the first team have a night off and get right back to preparations for Saturday from Wednesday onwards.

It's an awkward game for Saints at this stage in the season. We desperately need wins to gain confidence and momentum, yet as 'the Kraken' says ,the league is far more important than this , and otherwise surely we too would be fielding a weakened side to give a game to a few fringe players etc. Worse case scenario is us putting out a full side and losing, especially to a weak Bolton side, and especially if we get a few injuries in the process.

We could turn this lot over on our day, especially if they put out a weakened team. Personally I feel Bolton need to be brought down a peg or two: Unlike us, Leeds, Notts Forest etc they are not a 'Premiership' team. I'm going for 2-0 saints.

lol at everything in this post!

They will tear us a new one and this place will be suicide central. 3-0 Bolton IMHO, with Puncheon sent off for us.

Normally I would say rest players for a cup match we don't really need. But we haven't clicked into gear yet so the only change I'd make would be to bring in Guly - although I'm in at least 3 minds as to who he should come in for!

Right -sided midfielder isn't he? Obviously it's Puncheon's place that is at risk. (Except that Pardew will probably put Puncheon in central midfield, drop Barnard and play 4-5-1)

They are ****ing Bolton for crying out loud. An ugly 'Premiership' team who can't pass for toffee and just love to lump it up front for Davies or that Elmander bloke. They will come down here with the attitude you displayed in your post and under estimate us (hence them resting their 'top' players). We CAN beat them, we should have beaten Birmingham last year and certainly would have beaten the Skates if it wasn't for James. If Saints come out, play some nice passing football, we can do them.

Bolton do represent everything that's bad about the lesser teams of the Premier League, that's for sure, and their style has fuelled more of the likes of Stoke, Blackburn, Wigan, Wolves etc plodding along and eeking out horrible draws and narrow wins with negative, stopping football. But that's nowhere near a good enough reason for me to think we should risk our first team in a meaningless game in a competition we will never win. Much rather we used it for fitness and sharpness for those who need it and for the fringe players to have a run out.

I can certainly see your point, but if were not going out to win then what is the point in us even turning up Tuesday night? Fonte and Jaidi can deal with Davies, Seabourne certainly can't. Like you I can't see Saints winning this competition but some of our first XI are obviously lacking confidence already (which is shocking) and knocking out a Prem team may just do the trick for some. But hey ho, I'm evidently in a positive mood today, ask me again tomorrow and I'll probably tell you we will get hammered regardless of who we put out!

Didn't AP say (in saturdays match programme I think) that we want to win every game? If we lose so what? no one expects otherwise they're EPL after all. If we win surely it's a confidence boost? on the other hand the idea of a league one side putting out a weakened team against an EPL side is quite funny lets play the youth/reseves for a laugh.

I'm not saying we should just turn up and roll over. I just think it gives the likes of Lambert, Puncheon, maybe Dickson a good chance to sharpen up their game. And a real motivation for any of the fringe players to stake a claim for a starting spot. Davies and Elmander are a couple of strong, backs to goal forwards so would be a great learning curve for Martin and Seaborne. And what better motivation for AOC and Guly than to say "get out there, give it a good go, show us what you can do going forwards", with having very little pressure on the actual result.

I just have terrible memories of being at the Brum game last year when we, needlessly, lost a very good right back for the season.

We all know AP & NC read this forum.

They sure as sh1t won't want to set Alps off on another one if we go 1-0 down so rest assured we'll put out our strongest side

(but would expect Bart in goal) and goolies in the middle (IF cleared in time) with Hammond & MS needing game time to get up to full fitness

Bart in goal, a start for Guly and a start for AOC. Otherwise, our strongest side. We need games together and we need to win everything we play in, so going for anything other than a win is the wrong thing to do, IMO.

Got my tickets so as long as it's a good game I'll be happy. Looking forward to (hopefully) seeing Guly start too.

Just like the ugly way we play, back to Davis hoof it up to Lambert. If we get it on the deck and pass and move with the team spread out we could do well but that's not the way we play, mores the pity. I think Owen Coyle has a different philosophy and prefers his team to pass the ball like Burnley did under him.

I hope AP picks "his best team" based on performances so far. When you've had the start we've had this sort of game is ideal....absolutely no pressure whatsoever so doesnt matter if we lose, even to a so-called weakened Bolton team. The plus side of this approach is that if we win the huge boost it will give the players could be the catalyst to a big run of wins because this group knows how to win once its back in the swing of things.

We should go for the win and we should get at them straightaway. A win is a win and is just what the club needs; a win against a Prem side, whether weakened or not, would do wonders for us. Even a good performance would help and we have nothing to lose. We cant worry about freak injuries (other than sensibly resting anyone who has a knock etc) - if we did we would not risk anyone ! We did not have a game last week so most should be ok. Go for it

This competition is not a priority but we need to get the team winning again for the sake of momentum.

I'll let my heart rule my head here, put out our strongest team and aim to take the game to their second string. A win is a win, we need to start the habit somewhere.

Do not forget the "PULIS" in our list of players to get a run out :)

Shame that I am not going thanks to work. I think playing our best side would do us no harm, if you look at the Bournemouth game, after by all reports a lot of huffing and puffing with no result v Plymouth, the first half of that game was a bit of an effort but then the second half was far better and we beat a side that has since that game been smacking them into the back of the Onion bag for fun.

It would have been interesting to see how we would of faired at MK then against Orient had the sad events of that previous week not taken place. The start of a Football season can be a funny thing most teams misfire a little during the opening games then get into their stride, unless you are Chelsea and you get to play 2 teams straight away, one who is fresh into the league and nervous and another who have been Smashed by some margin the previous week and are nervous to avoid a repeat. Momentum is the key.

I hate to bring out a 'SRS argument', but check attendance figures.
I prefer to go on league status when judging who is (and is not) a EPL team. If average attendances dictated league status then I agree that we would be higher up the league echelon than the likes of Bolton, Wigan etc - but it doesn't, and Bolton are in the EPL and we ain't. They would also beat us 8 out of 10 times currently with a full strength team.

I reckon we should put out a strong-ish side with a few changes. We need a win on Saturday, so can't risk tiring out the older players in the squad like Jaidi and Connolly.

Agreed, could we not quietly slip out of the back door with quiet dignity and everyone intact ? Say a 2-0 defeat ?

Pards confirmed on Saints player that it will be his strongest avaliable team, as the likes of Lambo, Punch and Adam need the games.

If clearance is received, Gully will play a part.

Of course he should play his stongest line up.

Some need matches to get up to match fitness and the rest had the previous weekend off FFS.

Are you sure, DP, that NC and AP read this ?? I think we flatter ourselves that they would be interested with the majority of the drivel that turns up on here !!!

Oh yes absolutely.

Didn't you hear the rumours that NC broke down in tears more than once last season after being cirtiqued by large hills in a country near Switzerland (LHIACNS)? He takes these things to heart I can tell you (source - the bloke that washes the taxis that take people to the Cement truck yard)

Apparently SMS was a total war zone today, talks of people being shocked that LHIACNS wasn't over the moon.

AP's team preparations are in total turmoil simply because there's been no official word on what we should do tomorrow. They're terrified that there will be no firm proposal before kick-off and they have to second guess again.

Honest
