Has the power gone to Cortese's head?

Simple question: Has the power gone to Cortese's head? He was appointed by ML to do a job. While ML was alive, he had to do that job under the sure and steady gaze of ML.

Now things have changed. ML is dead. Are we now beginning to see Cortese's true stripes? Cortese has obviously ingratiated himself with the new owners, ML's family. But do they have as much influence over him as ML did?

It is becoming quite apparent that Cortese is a lose canon. He has no one lined up to fill the hole which he petulantly created when he sacked Pardew.

Yet again our club is being dominated by a suited egotistical man. Comparisons to Rupert Lowe are not completely without merit. Lowe had no idea what he was doing, nor does Cortese.

I will be the first to eat humble pie if Cortese pulls a rabbit out the hat before the next home game with a big name as out manager. If he doesn't then he is in the same waffle league as other suited idiots.

I don't know so much about power going to his head as he is the Chief Exec anyway, but there is no doubt in my mind that the last 2 results are directly the result of his decision to sack Pardew.

I was listening to Scott Minto on Sky Sports this afternoon who made mention of Cortese beginning to interfere in team matters.

It does make me wonder if he suddenly thinks he's a football man. I don't know whether it's true or not, but something is obviously seriously wrong and has been for some weeks/months.

What worries me now is that the disruption is putting us back where we were a year ago.

I firmly believe that sacking Pardew cost us our place in the JPT and it most definitely cost 3 points today. With respect to Rochdale, he have the resources and the players to beat them comfortably. Nice one Nic

What a load of ****.

Cortese wasn't "appointed by ML to do a job" at all.

Cortese persuaded ML to buy the club for him.

ML, in his own words "knows football has two goals and you have to kick the ball in one" and that's it.

He may well have enjoyed the ride subsequently, but as was clearly stated at the time, let NC take the helm and run the show from day one.

Oh and wow!

Ferguson really?

I don't think it's a case of Cortese's power gone to his head. He's not an idiot, and I firmly believe there must have been a bloody good reason for him to sack Pardew. Of course, we need to wait and see what happens next. We've had a shocking start, but there's plenty of time left in the season for things to come good. We do have to get a move on, but I'm sure things will be great come May.

Let's be honest, when has Southampton Football Club ever done things the easy way? We'd all get bored if it was plain sailing!

Oh do grow up!!

NC could earn a lot more, with a lot less grief, in the financial world. Look back to all the info around the take over and it is clear ML would only buy us if NC run it for him - it's all the power he ever needed - indeed ML mentioned several times, NC ran the show and ML just enjoyed the ride (recall the watch story?). Seems NC even "over ruled" ML to save AP last season.

Please read (or re-read) the only bit of fact we have on the AP sacking - the official statement on the club website - NC is very clear in that he has not done this lightly and fully understands changing managers does not help achieve success, but clearly something happened (my guess is a row over transfers, which also high-lighted massive differences in the overall longer term strategy between the two) and NC decided to make the change. IMO this was not pre-planned, hence no immediate replacement, but also not gross misconduct - just a final straw incident of a simmering wart. So however painful in the short term I believe NC made the right call, but it does not matter what I or anyone else thinks - NC (backed fully by ML's estate) own/run the club and can do whatever he likes.

I think this will prove to be the right move in time, but even if not, I remain grateful to NC (he lead ML to us - without him ML would have moved) for saving our club! What short memories we have - were you really this despondent when we only had a day or two to exist as a club before NC saved us? If it takes us one more season to get out of this awful league then so be it, despite hating the prospect it is much better than not having one !

Get the F off NC's back - wait till you know the facts around the AP sacking, and how the future plays out - then judge him - and even if things don't work out, would you rather he did not bail us out????? Gratitude is so easily forgotten.

Finally, some words of sanity.

Most of the other stuff on this thread really takes the biscuit.

NC needs to take a long hard look at that watch and the Rochdale performance. And then do something about it. The time for judging NC is right on us. Right now. He might have been the cause of unprecented investment in the club but the fans have invested a lot more emotionally over the years and will be mad as hell if he turns out to be another RL. The photographer ban was not a good sign. And neither is the start of this season.

I love teh supper dooper know it alls that think everything was rosy in Pardew land.

Fact is it wasn't, fact is this sh*te, one dimensional rely on Lambert bringing down the hoof ball football was all Pardews idea.

Remember that Northam actually Boo'd him for all the home games in charge he had at St Mary's.

Remember the fact he didn't have a clue what to do if his plan A didn't work.

But more importantly, even if it was all NC's fault, i don't want someone managing at St marys who has not the full support of the chairman, Pardew has always been an arrogant w*nker who has fell out somewhere or another everywhere he has gone.

NC has moulded us into a club that is now geared for teh top tier, wow, pardew won the JPT, so F*cking what ? Wembley was a good day out but i still woke up this season wondering why we are still in this godforsaken league with the likes of Rochf*ckingdale. Perhaps without this wonderful *cough* tin pot trophy we would be in the NPC by now ??

With respect, being dumped out of the JPT was the BEST thing that could have happened, because Pardew's insistance in going for that over the League cost us a Top Six spt

As regards Rochdale.... the losing of 3 points was down to our players not being able to hit a Barn Door at 3 metres. It might just as well of been Capello in charge, the ball would still have gone over the bar instead of under it

cortese is (after the jpt wembley and overall superb support) now crowing that he has bought a premier league club in the 3rd tier, all true, and that if he wanted to buy a prem league club he would have to shell out £150...£200 mill eg west ham everton blackburn. all he has to do is move it 2 divisions!! what he hasnt taken into account is that he has no clue how to do it,sacking yth coaches analysts kitmen, coaches managers and letting a nomark like Les Read appoint all their replacements. his transfers all involve the same shady Italian agent (vanuuchi guly pappa) guly parachuted in on 9k a week when ceiling is /was 7k for pardew. its a personal business that ML gave him as a gift and if he gets us to the prem he will sell and be gone with the profit. thats fine but at least lets have it right. this isnt the secretive world of banking this is a football club where we deserve some openess. Oh do grow up.

So because NC could earn more in banking than working here, he is a selfless saviour, who only has our best interests at heart? Why are we so blessed? And why bestow such generosity on our humble club? We should be truly grateful and never question a thing this messier has done for us. FFS.

He is exactly what the original poster suggests, power crazy. Nothing in itself wrong with that, in fact you could argue it's imperative for a good CEO, but only one who can make the right choices.

NC has lurched from poor decision to poor decision. The banning of press photographers I thought would be hard to beat, but our man stood up to the plate and showed stupidity knows know bounds. After having all summer to sack pardew and bring in a new man with time to do pre-season and spend wisely, he waits for the end of the transfer window to make the change after 3 games. What a plonker.

But hey, the rumour is ML wanted AP sacked but it was NC who talked him out of it? I don't think so, why then carry out his wishes now, as a mark of respect?? Get real.

Put this latest incident in perspective. NC is a man who thought he could make the club a few hundred quid a game extra by making newspapers buy from an approve SFC supplier.

At no stage did he stop top consider that no other football club does this in the world, even Man U, Real Madrid etc who have a lot more muscle. Nor did he consider that no other sporting event in the world does this, the olympics, the NFL, Wimbledon you name it. He didn't stop to consider that although it's a sports event, it's also a news event and the corner stone of western democracy is freedom of speech. Thats the way the papers view it and thats why hell will freeze over before they buy pictures from an approved supplier. And non of this occurred to NC. That alone in my mind makes him a liability, a loose cannon, and someone who would arbitrarily fire a manger without due consideration for the consequences.

But apparently it's their club, and they can do what they like? Thats a business not a football club.

Yes i think he's power crazy, because he sure ain't taking good counsel.

Where do you get all this sheite from? If you cannot figure out that Cortese had TOTAL control previously, there's no way you should be let outside unless clinging to your mum's hand.

He realises the impact of having to sack a manager at this position in the season, something specifically highlighted in the OS article. I don't care if you eat humble pie or anything else you stuff down your neck, you know fook all about what and why things are happening. Cortese would not have done this unless he felt it was in the best interests of Saints, even allowing for the short term damage that would accumulate.

Agree with most of what you have written.

Photographers ban is ludicrous.I read Celtic had also tried this but did a 'U'turn fairly rapidly. We on the other hand allow local rags like The Swindon Advertiser and Plymouth rag to get free publicity by taking the p!ss.This ranks alongside the original statue episode as an own-goal in humiliation.

As for taking counsel, the problem is that there is no adviser close enough,or boardroom in place to discuss measures.

To me it's not so much the decisions but the way of implementing them and my disquiet was aroused by things other than AP's removal.

Totally agree and as for waiting for the facts , then i would not advise anyone to hold their breath.

What hurts is that bit by bit i am starting not to give a stuff

Paying to park to go to away games stinks

You're far too sensible and balanced to get onto my ignore list.

[ Dinkle jockey; noun. One who rides dinkles, often in a professional capacity. ]

I am flattered. I guessed the "jockey" bit - it was "dinkle" that had me......I should have used Google: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=dinkle

I actually saw one in the toilets after the game as it happens (not attached to me!)

Nice re-writing of history you're doing there. Pretty impressive.

I will grant you that August and September under Pardew were not up to scratch. However after that things clicked into gear and we were the best team in the league. That's not my opinion, that is based on actual results.

From October onwards we won 22 of the 36 games we played, scored 75 goals, amassed 74 points and played some bloody good football. Norwich away, BR away, Huddersfield + Walsall at home....you go to any of those games? Hoofball was it?

Now for a manager who didn't have a clue, and who was booed in every game (seriously where did you get that from?!?) and had no plan B...those are actually some pretty good stats.

I'm sure you'll come back and say "well October, November, December, January, February, March and April don't matter, it's only over the course of the whole season that Pardew can be fairly judged" but that would be to ignore some cold hard facts and suit your anti-Pardew agenda.

Did it ever occur to you that these 'know-it-alls' who thought AP was doing a good job, might just be normal fans who watched a load of wins and saw a load of goals last season. Last time I checked lots of goals + lots of wins = good (in terms of a football club's success)

I think last season with Pardew in charge was one of the best seasons in the last twenty years
