I owe an apology to my mate

He told me we had a striker who qualifies for both Portugal and an African nation, and will eventually become a top PL striker

Needless to say I totally ridiculed him, its Alberto Seidi

Whether he becomes PL class or not, who knows, but apparantely he chose us instead of Braga

What about Lloyd Foot ? The centre half (holder spooner or hogan wallace or something) and Jake sinclair ?

Those three have been talked about as being the next big thing ? are they too young still ?

Anyway, great great news IMO

Think some of them have pro contracts.

Holder-Spooner has been told he can find a new club and is having trials with Bournemouth I believe

It's great news for the lads. I thought this news would be coming out soon because my nephew was given a new two year contract with the academy last week so it must be renewal time. Congratulations to all who were kept on.

Interesting that the OS says the majority come from the Academy, but in fact 4 of the mentioned 7 were not academy based. Good to see that we are going back to the days of signing young talent from wherever we can instead of just relying on the academy itself. The academy is excellent, but when you narrow your catchment area down as the academy does (and to make matters worse half our catchment area is in the Solent/English Channel) it can be a bit limiting. Even one of the others is from the Bath Satellite (as was Gareth Bale amongst others) - by the way this particular lad looks about 10, needs to get a new picture taken and look a bit harder :-)

any of those lads locally born or based? Congratulations to all of them. Even making that grade is something very special indeed. Hope they all go on to great things with one or two perhaps sticking around if they do!

Looks like something out of Home Alone, a few tattoos should make him look a bit hard.

To be honest if this news tells me anything, it's that I haven't got a bloody clue how our academy works from a contract perspective, or in terms of the Year 1/2/3 etc structure - other than the player having to be 17 to sign a pro deal and probably having the chance to be there for years before (or not, as with some of this lot).

So can someone recap ? Are there 4 years of Academy and then it's "become pro" or "get released" ? What's the difference between the apprentice and the others ? I assume people can be recruited and join at any point along the way..?

What's the satellite stuff ? I get that we can only recruit within a particular area, so is it related to that and linked to their age and amount of travelling they are allowed to do ?

We have the Bath centre so we have somewhere to hold sessions for players we have spotted in the South West where there is not a whole load of competition.

Then can bring them in centrally when they reach 15/16.

If Jack Dovey, Lloyd Foot and Jordace Holder-Spooner are all being released I would assme that, since they have not been offered deals, Lee Nicholas and Ben Martin are too. They signed for the academy at the same time and are the same age. That would leave a youth squad of 19 for next season (plus anyone signed on over the summer), made up of some on pro contracts and some not

Goalkeepers

Chris Johns

Steven Mowthorpe

Defenders

Jack Stephens

Luke Shaw

Jordan Turnball

Daniel Bowman

Conor O'Sullivan

Matt Young

Midfielders

Andy Robinson

James Ward-Prowse

Calum Chambers

Harrison Reed

Joe Curtis

Corby Moore

Omar Rowe

Wingers

Lloyd Isgrove

Forwards

Sam Hoskins

Alberto Seidi

Jake Sinclair

Are we only going to have 6 players in our youth team? How are we going to make up the numbers? Do some of the reserves from the full squad drop down or do they just play 6-a-side?

it's abit complicated now.

1- we don't have a "reserve side " but the upside being that we can arrange as many friendlies as we want with an U21 side and exception for over age players, and everyone can get an "airing ".

2- Some Academy have started very early - even as U12s - and the U16 side has talent, too.

U18 side (third year Academy) can have 16, 17 or 18 year olds in it.

Allowing for injuries, loss of form etc, you can't have enough youngsters..but the real crunch comes when they reach 18 ..and haven't (made the grade) impressed enough to be challenging for a first team spot. Those who did and gone before are well-known names.

Bridge, Walcott, Blackstock, Bale, Surman, Lallana, Alex Chamberlain...and now even with Gobern and Doble on the horizon.

Of course we have " caught a cold " over the years and had a few slip through the net...Dennis Wise and Kevin Phillips (as teenagers) in the 1980's are prime examples....as some players tend to mature " late-on " in their mid 20's rather than as teenagers.

It must be very hard to look at a youth player and say .."he's not going to make it " ..but it has to be done. You can only hope we get it right.

For most of them, a career in L1 / L2, or Conference is the most likely outcome..and if someone has to go ..it's good to get £10 million for them beforehand, then it doesn't feel quite so bad if they end up playing in the Premiership with someone else.

I swear Curtis, Rowe and Chambers are Wingers too? Curtis played left wing in the under 18 cup game v Thurrock at SMS.

And we have a very very strong academy side, most of which are still a year or two too young for the under 18's, like this season, but can still compete.

I'd be interested to see what Alberto Seidi is like, I wonder if he is the same class as Ward-Prowse or Sinclair.

Isgrove is one also I've tipped to play for the first team in the next few seasons, very quick, agile, tricky winger.

Dovey, Foot, Holder-Spooner, Nicholas, Martin, Isgrove, Hoskins, Robinson are already over 18 years old.

They are all too old to play in the academy teams next season whether they have a new contract or not.

There used to be a 1 hour from training facility rule [sic] a few years back.

I remember my nephew being on Charlton's books but he had to switch to Gillingham when they realised it was taking him nearly two hours to get to their place.

Im sure that Saints had a training camp at Martin Mill near Deal at one point too.
