We arent going to finish top 6, we arent going to finish bottom 3 so why not use the time to really go for the FA Cup and give players like Gallagher, Chambers, JWP, Reed, Isgrove, Targett etc more games, see how they go, they're not under any real pressure

I think this is a fair view. We won't really have a better opportunity to give the young lads a run out in the biggest league it the world.

And if we're honest, as much as having another attacking player would be ideal....we've still got Jay, Lallana, Lambert...midfield options of JWP, Davis, Cork, Morgan.....it really isn't a bad team, In fact it's still probably the best team I've had the pleasure of seeing in my lifetime.

yeah off load the dead wood and let the academy boys play (though I like Puncheon and think he could still do a job here). We're going to finish around about where we are now in the league anyway and we have an outside chance in the cup hardly worth paying over the odds on January panic buys for. Give the youth a chance to get PL experience for half season when the pressure is off because we are safe.

Great to see Kat is allowing players who are not needed here to carry on with their careers elsewhere and rewarding their loyalty with moves to clubs at their level rather than holding them here against their will letting them be ostracised from the first team. Billionaire, businesswoman and human being.

we have as much chance as finishing top 4 as we do winning the FA Cup

Does seem like January is a cost saving exercise. A bit worried that our squad looks so thin now and I'm not as convinced as others seem to be that players like Gallagher are ready. Appreciate we won't go down but a shame to give up on what could have been a truly excellent season.

Is this your version of the "Man Utd are as likely to be relegated as West Ham"?

Because of course it's a nonsense. To gain 4th position in the league requires a degree of consistency over 19 matches. Winning the FA Cup requires us to win 6 just matches, half of which are likely to be against teams in a lower position to us.

I know how it works

but with Arsenal/Liverpool, Chelsea/City etc still in, they are miles better than the rest

I just hope that those in charge havnt bought into playing our academy as a must.

They are not good enough yet to play premier league football.

Ward Prowse has flattered to deceive, Gallagher needs time and Isgrove and Reed etc need games on loan in my opinion.

Our bench looks very thin and any more injuries could see us fall away sharply.

I am glad we are getting rid of the deadwood but we also need to address the balance.

Those that are saying we don't need to sign will soon be moaning on here if we start losing a few.

This, I don't have a clue why we had so many players who were clearly never going to play for us again mooching about the place. It wasn't good for them and I struggle to see how it was good for us.

It's because Cortese priced them out of moves, all the time. Barnard could have gone on a few occasions to L1/L2 clubs, but we wanted the 'loaning' club to pay 100% wages, which isn't possible for L1 and L2 clubs. Same was said for Martin, and only Palace managed to afford that last season. He was a better fit for one of the lower sides that came in for him tbf.

We stuck a stupid price on Puncheon's head a year or so back, so he never managed to get his move. We've shown a bit of thought and allowed these players to get on with their careers, god knows why we weren't allowing that before, as there were certainly numerous attempts to take them all away from us at points over the last 18 months.

Arsenal looked beatable at SMS the other night and we beat Liverpool earlier in the season and at SMS last season. Not saying we will win it, Sunderland will be tough enough, but no reason why we avoid all of them in the next round, or Arsenal beat Liverpool and we beat Arsenal. Maybe the winners of those top four side games get each other? Who knows. One thing I do know is getting in the top 4 is a lot less likely than winning the cup.

Out of the 18 teams still in it, 11 are Premiership teams.

Of those four teams you mention, 2 of them will be out of the Cup, as they are playing each other. If we beat Sunderland, then that's another Premiership club gone. Everton and Swansea will reduce it by yet another one. Even if all of the Premiership clubs manage to beat their lower division opponents which is never a certainty in the Cup, there would still be a lower division team, either Sheffield Wednesday or Charlton, and Fulham, Cardiff, Hull, and either Arsenal/Liverpool, Man City/Chelsea, Everton/Swansea.

If we beat Sunderland and were really lucky and drew the winner of Sheffield Wednesday/Charlton, beat them and we would be in the semi-finals. With home advantage, we could beat anybody on our day.

Dear batman, barry sanchez, alpine saint

Is there anything in your life you are happy and content about. Having read your posts over a reasonable period of time I have come come to the conclusion you really do seem to be a grumpy old man?

Ps this also goes for quite a few other people on here. So please don't feel I'm picking on you just by mentioning your name.

Your mask is slipping mate!!! Be careful

As delldays you were the most boring, depressed guy on the forum. You came back as the re-branded "everyone love me" Batman and tried to kid on that you were content (Tim from the Uk Office type)

Your now slipping back to your true self

It could actually be the new CEO making these decisions, you know, not Katerina at all?

I mean, she has appointed a new CEO but everyone here is assuming she is still the effective CEO.

Whilst that might be true - it probably isn't.

Makes sense to free up some wages. There are a few in the squad due a new deal. Cork only has 18 months left, as does Davis. Jay Rod is due contract discussions as he has made 45 starts (or something like that). A number of our young players will have contract accelerators in their deals where they earn more based on starts and / or after every year of their deal. It wouldn't be unusual to see Jay Rod and Lallana earn more because they've played for England, too.

With Osvaldo leaving as well, that will leave plenty in the pot for some summer moves for whomever is in charge. I think the club have done well, though personally I'd prefer to see another senior striker join.

True, but its alot off the wage bill.

Quick calculation.... Those 21 players were collectively earning approx 250k (minimum) per week! Thats £1m saved per month

two ow sides to every thing..... If speculating, you could just as easily suggest that although it was recognised that these guys might not be good enough for us in the prem, they were rewarded for their efforts in getting us there with contracts reflective of that... Which makes them more difficult to loan out.... We don't stick 'stupid prices' on their heads, just ones that are viable from a business perspective... And not charitable..

Respectfully suggest, there is a greater reality to this side than assuming the nasty club were deliberately restricting careers... But guess it is very fashionable to find constant fault with everything under NC now he's gone, so I must be wrong....

Ehhhh ........ Holding them here against their will? On fat contracts ? Southampton Football Club will want shot if them - nothing to do with being 'human'. A very romantic notion.

It would only be difficult to loan out such players if we refused to pay a large enough proportion of their salaries to make the loan appealing to a non-Premier League club. If we'd loaned out a player while still paying half his wage, for example, the player would have been able to play and the club would have saved something on wages.

Similarly, you can only sell a player for the amount another club is willing to pay; how would sticking out for a higher price, not selling and still paying the wage of a non-contributing player make any kind of business sense? The club would be spending more than it needed to and getting nothing in return.

Of course neither Cortese or the club was deliberately restricting players' careers (and I don't think that anyone is seriously suggesting that this was the case), but it is abundantly clear that something has changed and that that has allowed various players to be loaned out who weren't getting loaned out before.

Who has been finding fault with your hero? I haven't seen anyone doing this other in your delicate little mind Francis. Still crying yourself to sleep with the Leeds programme under your pillow?

Best odds ..

Saints for a Top 4 finish ... 250/1

Saints to win the FA Cup ... 14/1

I think that should settle the argument!

LOL nicely put. We might win the FA cup with a bit of luck both on the field and in the draw we won't finish top 4 becuase that requires consistency not luck!
