2 New signings on OS

The Fat Controller

Recommended Posts

From what I've seen of Smith so far, he's not a player to set the World on fire. Unless he improves considerably, I can't say I'm ecstatic about him.

But he's cheap, which means that Lowe rates him highly.

Smith will have to improve greatly from what he showed on Saturday as he was abysmal. We are short on funds yet sign a Millwall reserve player no matter how cheap.

Hopefully Molyneux will help us improve in the set piece part of our game as Lallana, Skacel and Holmes efforts have been shocking.

Good to sign a left back i suppose...

Hope Scacel plays left midfield now or is Rupert selling some more of the

experience ?????

Smith very average at present so we will see, just one thing though

Only Millwall reserve and we sign him,why did they not want him?

I hope these are followed by a couple experienced players .

But what i reall want is portvliet gone and a proper man

brought in.

Distinctly underwhelmed by the signing of Smith !

Dyer, Thomson, McLaggon, White, Holmes and Bwp are all of a similar ilk and I can't for the life of me see what he can add to the squad ?

Molyneux could be ok though as a specialist LB is always good but I do have a sneaky feeling that this could be in advance of Surman and\or Skacel departing !!!

Happy new year to one and all !

I agree with you Ryan Smith seems to be surplus to requirements

Two more prime examples that the clubs transfer policy is to sign young players more as a investment rather than as an immediate strengthening of the squad . The strategic plan is to identify cheap underrated young players whom someone at the club (not Jan Poortvliet IMO) believes can be improved over time into becoming profitable assets to keep SFC/SLH solvent in the medium term .

In the short term these may not be the type of players we need right now but this medium term planning does suggests to me we may not be as near to Administration as I've previously understood and that quite possibly the Board believe we can continue to trade even after possible/probable relegation this season . Time (& more importantly our creditors) will tell if they're right or not .

Lee Molyneux Profile

Born: 24/02/1989

Nationality: English

Position: Defender

A left-sided fullback, Lee has also played in midfield.

He is something of a set-piece specialist and proved it by netting a superb direct free-kick against Liverpool’s reserves last season.

A naturally attacking player, Lee uses his pace to great effect to trouble the opposition.

He has featured for England under 18s in the past.

Molyneux was involved in the first-teams friendly at FC Sion in July 2008.

I see most of the ArseHats on here are sticking with tradition and writing off a player after less than a handful of outings. Hmm John, Crouch, Fuller and a few other names spring to mind immediately  FFS give the lad a chance.

Dont worry about it. The same knobs wrote off Schneiderlin and Holmes as someone elses rejects.

Skacel must be off, no other reason for signing another left back.

Amazed Smith has got a deal, he is lightweight.

My initial thought as well Chez. We seem to be slipping into the strategy of quantity rather than quality right now. There was a stat in the Echo the other night about how many players JP has played so far and I seem to recall 28 being mentioned but that can't be right can it?

No, it can't be. According to the Echo piece it's 29 players used purely in league games!

Skacel is off then. He really WAS waving goodbye V Reading.

Unlike most i'm pretty sure Smith will be a decent signing for us. He's shown potential (just like every other player in our team), but he seems to be lacking the confidence to take players on, choosing instead to cut inside.

If we survive this season i'm actually pretty excited for next year.

Sadly, this is the philosophy that cost us our Premiership status ultimately. Too many managers resulted in a bloated squad of mediocrity, encouraged by the idea we should not put all our eggs into three/four key players basket.

Under Burley we seemed to buy nothing but midfielders.

Now we seem to have lots of young players who play out of position but not a 22 which includes say 2 right backs, two left backs, etc.

Now, this might be my age and that might not be how modern football works, but surely we don't need more than four strikers, eight midfielders, eight defenders and three goal-keepers no matter the bloody formation??

Surely 23 best quality players affordable is a more sound financial basis (all things considered) than 35 of 'potential'??

6 months for Smith? Jury's out on this lad so fair enough no big commitment.

Good luck to the scouse lad. Might get a nice debut v Ronaldo on Sunday!

Skacel could play left mid then, where he should imo.

Can't imagine he, Lallana or Surman will play, as being cup-tied will reduce their value.

Not sure at all about Smith. Seemed a rushed and desperate loan when we first got him, and have seen nothing to think differently.

At least Molyneux is an orthodox full back, and I suppose the jury will be out until he's played a few games. The idea that he is a replacement for Skacel was something that crossed my mind.

Yes, or Surman perhaps? Skacel could move into midfield........

Smith is very poor from what i've seen of him. The fact he was a Millwall reserve is a clue to his standard of play.

It seems the club do not think we need some experienced players to get out of trouble like most teams do.

Maybe they feel picking 8 or 9 youngsters/reserves is the right way to go to get results? after all there are loads of teams throughout the history of football who have done this and been successful NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-(

Hopefully as it's only the 1st day of the window we will see some more experienced players arrive after the predicted sales of players.

That sound you can hear is the death throes of this club, pointedly more in focus when you look at Forest and their new manager. Pathetic. Ryan Smith? I thought this was a joke at first. Why aren't more people angry at how our club is disappearing? Why has JP still got a job? Why hasn't he a shred of decency to realise he should resign? Why is Lowe continuing with this farce of an experiment? Why do we not get some players in who can at least stand up? Man U could be the last competitive game against top flight opposition ever.

I always watch the players clap at the end of games and it seemed pretty clear that Skacel knew he was off. I just hope this Molyneux settles quickly as Rudi had been playing quite well recently.

As for Smith, I don't think you can go wrong with a 6 month contract, it's probably only about 50k and he will be working really hard to get a long term contract.

Whilst I'm not ecstatic that we've signed Smith, giving him a 6 month contract isn't a bad idea as it means he has to work hard and improve if he wants a longer deal. As for Molynuex, well people have been asking for us to sign a LB and now we have people are still unhappy! Yes he's young and untried at this level, but I've seen him play a few times and he looks a decent prospect. With this signing, it would appear that Skacel's move to Ipswich is still set to go ahead.

You are undoubtably right. This is not a JP 'I want to stay in this league and avoid relegation' couple of signings but exactly as you suggest a Lowe 'I want this failing business to continue for as long as it can'.

100% correct post. Sums up SLH perfectly.

We need to loan some experienced defensive muscle for the battle ahead not Ryan Smith, who looks clueless everytime I have seen him. What is JP up to?

Plus a striker if Sagga doesnt perform.

Absolutely 100% correct.

... but we both know that JP is up to nothing - this is a Director of Football selection on behalf of his plc.

Another spot on post. Well said.
