I'm not looking to blame Uncle Les. He's done a very good job overall. He did however enjoy putting our approach to transfers and player development up on a pedestal, especially last season. You can't expect people not to scrutinise this if the evidence points to something which looks very different. Either we are overly reliant upon Koeman which insinuates that player profiling ins't bespoke or we have miscalculated what was actually needed.

he player profiling is bespoke to Southampton,” says Paul Mitchell, Southampton’s head of recruitment. “Really we try to interline our recruitment with our philosophy. It’s important our players play in our system and in our style and cope with the demands of the manager and the coaching staff. Our lists aren’t endless. It’s not every player that can play in our style but we look for the best fit for us when we put together our recruitment targets.

“At the moment we are a very athletic team. We cover an awful lot of distance. We’ve matured a lot over the last few years in the Premier League. The attributes of a Southampton player? He has to be athletic, he has to be able to move and engage with the environment and engage with the information that Southampton give them to make them successful in their careers.”

Identifying potential new signings is a collaborative effort but Southampton will already know who they want to buy next summer. Mitchell and his team work on targets for Koeman and he will make suggestions too. A lot of time is spent in that room they call the black box and the system means that Southampton were able to move quickly for Pellè and Tadic, who have both been a roaring success so far. Southampton do not want to block the path to the first team for the academy players but signing proven, experienced talent is also part of the ethos.

I guess Les believes in bespoken profiling in the same way he believes in not loaning out academy players.

Daily Mail claiming we are front runners for Remy.

The Daily Mail are not claiming that at all.

They say Saints are the "latest club to show an interest", that is very different form being "front runners" to sign him.

Chelsea striker Loic Remy to quiz new boss Guus Hiddink about plans as Southampton join clubs keen on January move for him

Loic Remy is to hold talks with Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink over his future after Southampton became the latest club to show interest in signing him.

The France international is eager to see if Chelsea will let him leave next month with Southampton, Swansea, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace all keen to take him on an initial loan. The 28-year-old joined Chelsea last year for £10.5m after a move to Liverpool fell through but he has been limited to appearances mainly from the bench with Diego Costa established as first choice.

Remy is mindful of keeping his place in France's European Championship squad and is willing to leave if Hiddink agrees. St Etienne and Lille have also made contact with his representatives but will fall short of the finances required.

Trying to put a positive spin on what is rather a depressing forum mate.

Regardless- if the DM is right- nice to see we are looking to get someone like Remy in.

Seen we have been linked with Sebastian Haller from Utrecht this morning 22 year old centre forward in the same mould as Pelle.

French bloke, came from Auxerre originally I think, has had a few decent games for the Bleuets so that's good but Utrecht is way way down the ladder and I'm surprised we're looking that far down.

Absolutely, unless we're going to pension off Stek or send back Caulker.

The Red Tops do not consider PL rules when speculating though.

Gardos isn't far off being fit isn't he? Caulker's been linked to Sunderland, too. Sounds like what happened with Djuricic would have to happen with Caulker, then we could sign Chambers.

Am i wrong in thinking Caulker is only with us until January?

I'd go with that. but are we not already max'd out on domestic loans?

Caulker and Stek?

Think it was Andy D, who seems to post half decent info, said he expected Stek to sign permanently. If this were to happen in January it would free up a domestic loan space.

From memory this is what Palace did with Puncheon.

Daily Mail claiming we are front runners for Remy.

that would do nicely

Would bring some much-needed pace and energy to the centre-forward position, whilst also proving that you don't need to be a big, immobile, bully-boy target-man to do a good job of holding up the ball. Very versatile centre-forward and a harder worker than a lot of people might appreciate (you only have to look at how badly his absence hurt Newcastle).

If we got Chambers we wouldn't need Caulker any longer.

lets be honest, would we miss caulker?

he has been terrible

Quite. Another defender who was overrated because he was physically a fully-grown man aged 17 and so was playing first-team professional football as a teenager, and therefore presumed to improve to a world-beater. A bit like Micah Richards but worse, and only a few rungs above the infamous 'once-a-6'3"-14-year-old' Cherno Samba.

It sounds like we are about to do our best bit of transfer business for a long time and bring back Calum Chambers.

Double V D was our best bit of business in a long time. However Chambers would be a great addition in a position we need to strengthen. Really can't see him accepting it though. Would feel like a failure on his part I'd imagine. Even if it is just a loan.
