We were linked with Eder before I'm sure.

Why spend 8 million on him to get him in in January when he's on a bosman in the summer? We aren't going down, we aren't getting into Europe, so it seems unnecessary to pay big money when we don't really need to...?

We are only 7 points away from 18th which is 3rd from bottom.

No idea why

Why do it in January?

So we get half a season out of a goalscoring forward, rather than relying on an apparently injured Pelle, a crocked J-Rod and $hLong. And so possibly push back into and stay in the top 10. Plus it gives him plenty of time to settle, get used to the team and so start next season firing on all cylinders.

And lets get Chambers too......immediate competition for RB, and perhaps the long term replacement for Fonte.

C'mon Big Kat: chequebook time!

Apart from Blackman (and most on that list) just wouldn't give Pelle any serious competition which is the whole point of bringing someone in.

We are an established PL side and can pay good salaries. We can attract better than a midtable Championship striker with just one decent half season to his name.

We might pay "good salaries" but we don't pay the type of salary you need to attract or keep top players.

You want a top guy ? It's 80K a week minimum. You want a really top top guy, you're looking at 100K and plus.

Obviously not some world class striker. But we can surely pay enough to get someone better than the likes of Blackman?

So, we should try to sign someone who doesn't give a **** :( Think we have more sense and hopefully we won't do business with Spurs anyway.

You dont think hes been treated badly ? I'd take him and 8m for wanyama (and use the 8m for Austin) in January!

We won't spend big on a striker. He wouldn't play with pelle, and there's no way we'll be dropping pelle. Austin would be great back up but he'd want more than that. If we sign a striker it'll be a cheaper squad option.

I like pelle I just think he needs more pace around him on the wings and a number 10 behind who can also score.

Agreed, that pretty much be my take on it.

Austin is an excellent penalty box player but, like others have said, there isn't room in the team for him and Pelle.

We need a creative central player.

If Pelle needs injections to play, it would be worth having someone like Austin to start every other game so Pelle can be much healthier when he does start.

Don't know any names but we need someone who can play in midfield (in any position) who can carry the ball past someone and open things up for other players. Someone with pace or someone who is powerful. Don't care who. Doesn't need to be good at much else either.

Well that sounds like someone who'd probably cost a fair bit of money, doubt that we'll be getting one of those then...

This thing about Pelle needing injections. Was this actually said somewhere? The only reference I can find to injections before the last game was about Stek who had injections for his toe injury, but they did not have the desired effect.

Maybe, I don't know what other qualities Saints would deem are important which would impact the price. But I think that is what the team really needs at the moment and it would make a big difference. There aren't many other teams in the league who have so little pace or power as us.

from the evening with ronald koeman:

A whole stack of fan questions now… are you going to buy a striker in January?

If we sign a new player, it will be a striker.

Is it going to be Charlie Austin?

He’s too expensive.

not sure what expensive means, but he's clearly looking for something on the cheap

Here is who I would get:

Hakim Ziyech: Twente: Attacking Mid: will offer creativity and goals hopefully young talent!

Luuk De Jong - PSV : Striker: I would lay down decent money and get him in! young good strike record competition for Pelle

Andros Townsend: Attacking Mid: other option for midfield will bring him in on loan and get rid of Caulker.

Kevin Diks - right back cover for Soares young 18 years old with alot of potential

Considerations:

Sam Byram

Will hughes

Demarai Gray

Tom Ince

Charlie Austin

Break the bank to get:

Breel Embolo

Id like a right winger/midfielder with good pace- and drop Davis down to a deeper position with Wanyama.

JWP/Clasie/Romeu as reserves/allow us to mix it up a bit.

We'd all like two quality players for each position but for a club like us that will never happen.

.....latest texts seems to suggest that the Andros Townsend rumour was only a media story...wonder how much the bookies made on that one?

Tonny Vilhena's name is back. One Dutch story suggested he would have come last year but his mother was very ill and he didn't want to leave the country - that's fair enough.

OK ...he may be good.... but what we really need a good old fashioned, common or garden CF.

I'm OK with the Austin story..(if he comes, or not), but with Pelle still not 100% and JayRod's return unpredictable, it leaves us with Shane Long as the only fit striker....

If we can get him for under 1mil I'd have him here like a shot he is only 20.

Played an awesome season under Koeman, left footed AM who could do Davis role with a lot of growth potential and knows where the goal is.

Represented Holland in every age group and also was called into the prelim squad for the full team.

"Saints boss Ronald Koeman offered €2.4 million for Vilhena last January, but Feyenoord refused to do business.

"I admit that I would have liked to have played for Ronald. I like him," says the midfielder.

"But if it cannot happen, what can I do?"

It really doesn't take much viewing or even listening to dutch league fans to know this is a very average player in a very poor league. Pelle, Tadic, Clasie and Depay stood out a lot, and yet are still inconsistent. It's a very low quality league.

He will offer more than our own FEC, Dead Ball Specialist JWP
