That’s good to hear. What are they because a good the government the dates are ‘not before’ 17th May and not before 21st June.

On 29th March restrictions were lifted on outdoor meetings and sports for up to 6 people.

On 12th April most non-essential retail was reopened along with establishments serving food and drink outside, gyms, nail and beauty salons and other premises.

On 18th April fans were permitted to attend an FA Cup match in limited numbers

This weekend up to 5,000 people were allowed to attend a trial music event with no masks or SD.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, but I knew that already. These are not measures that were earlier than planned though, are they.

Football crowds could learn a lot from the BLM protesters. Smash up some property, attack a few coppers, cause mayhem all day, as long as it’s less than 50% of those in attendance doing it and You take the knee at some point during the day not only are you untouchable the police will wish you a good day the public will applaud the largely peaceful support so every ones a winner.

Yeah but India

India has just reached its highest daily deaths total of around 3689 in a population twenty times that of the UK. The highest figure in the UK was around the end of January at about 1800. There is a widespread view that their official figures are an understatement.

Each death is of course a tragedy.

Yep.

  • Full crowds at the crucible.
  • Boris reckons SD could be gone next month
  • Potential foreign travel in 2 weeks.
  • EU planning to restart leisure tourism.
  • Fewer than 200 people on ventilators

Lots of good news today. Our Covid strategy has clearly been highly effective since January.

Remember the days when the government were lambasted by the masses for not locking down early enough, easing lockdown too early, only caring about the economy, not having enough PPE, prioritising pounds over lives, not issuing a circuit breaker, closing down schools, not closing down schools, prioritising popular decisions over the good of the nation. The list is endless. Now they’ve got a strategy that’s worked They’ve got that wrong too.

Contrast that with the little sheep worried about their teams lack of pay rise and not really having much thought other than being a loyal little Tory boy who gets upset when anyone dares to criticises his little darlings.

As a low education, low wage, limited ability effort guy, it’s quite strange you would try to accuse me of being a Tory boy. Such a shame your pathetic little digs Aren’t credible as they lack any consistency.

This brings it home

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/05/04/opinions/india-covid-world-help-lall-gala-gupta-bhatt-jain-khan-roy-arora/index.html

400,000 new cases a day a “gross undercount” resulting in new more dangerous variants to evolve that are suspected to “evade prior immunity” from vaccination.India is a major supplier of vaccines and medicines, and doctors and nurses, to the world - this has clearly long term consequences for everybody not just those suffering in these countries with inadequate facilities and supplies.

Yep, they're in a mess and that mess will go well beyond its borders, whether that be variants, vaccines, medicines, medics, etc.

As for their true infection / death numbers, we'll never know but their population to ours is roughly 20:1. On a rough adjustment, 400,000 cases a day is like us having 20,000 and 3,500 deaths a day is like us having 175. If the pictures we see are telling an accurate story, I'd imagine its a lot worse than that.

When you consider just how horrendous the air they’ve been breathing for the last few decades really is, as well as how large and dense their conurbations are the true numbers must be horrendous. Especially as their health system has basically collapsed and the ratio of cases to deaths will be much, much worse. People who would have survived easily with oxygen and treatment are dying, something we thankfully never saw in the UK.

Some of those make-shift crematoriums looked like they could incinerate a couple of thousand corpses each, every day. Not a nice thought.

Indeed. I'd hate to guess how far short their issued numbers are from the reality. The crammed living in crammed conurbations, and the seemingly heightened risk to south asians, makes for a proper horror story.

For them we can do very little. For ourselves, all we can do is tighten our borders and hopefully we can carry on easing ourselves back to normality.

Public health experts have recommended a version of the Indian Covid variant found in the UK to be made a "variant of concern", the BBC has been told.

Public Health England (PHE) has been tracking a variant known as B.1.617.2, which appears to have been spreading more quickly in the UK than others.

Scientists believe it is more transmissible than the version of Covid first discovered in Wuhan, China.

Pretty sure that 'scientists' also said yesterday that whilst it was more transmissable (haven't we heard that about every variant so far?), it is also less lethal....

That's how natural selection work. Those variants which become dominant are the highly transmissable one which don't kill the host they need to spread them. The variants which kill the host quickly dont get transmittted and die out

Here we go again. Yep, same old message, more transmissible, not sure vaccines will be effective (even though they already said they were) don’t be complacent, just a few more months. Then research will show it wasn’t that much different to any other variant.

Del, you're making more of a fuss than the article does. Nobody is saying "just a few more months". We're opening up a bit more on 17 May, and then more 21 June. That's a few more weeks and there's no suggestion that'll be delayed. In that time groups 1-9 will be all jabbed up, and I'd suspect that all remaining people over 35, possibly younger, will have had their first jab. We'll be all systems go then.

In the mean time, people will get on with life using common sense and discretion.

How can a virus that has already been shown to be thwarted by the vaccine, be more transmissible in a population with millions of vaccinated people, compared to this time last year?

The figures don't add up...

Not making a fuss, but we've been here a number of times before haven't we.

The massive surge we had over winter and the start of this year was mostly caused by the UK variant being far more transmissible than we'd seen before. At the time as the numbers were starting to get worse, everyone was putting it down to people being stupid and lockdown fatigue, combined with restrictions being eased. We didn't imagine it could be as bad as the first wave because numbers were so low over the summer, and the country knew what it was doing after the first wave, as bad as that had been. Then before we knew it we found that everything we'd been doing up to that point wasn't enough, because of a variant, and we were back to a worse position than we'd been at the height of the first wave.

Since then, despite the data that the UK's provided on it, and the forewarning that provided, that variant has caused surges in the US and the EU.

The situation in the UK is looking pretty good now, but at a worldwide level, the pandemic is still worse than it's ever been. Because vaccines are targeting the spike protein, there's a lot of hope that any variation that allows it to completely escape a vaccine will also mean it's not as infective or deadly, but right now the worldwide situation means that by sheer weight of numbers more variants are being randomly formed than ever before.

Hopefully it won't happen, and it's probably unlikely, but if one of those variants escaped the vaccine completely and was still infective, and was still as deadly, it's possible we'd effectively have a situation where the population isn't vaccinated. Like before the vaccine, our only effective defence against it would be to lock down again, as hard as that would be for everyone to accept.

Right now there's nothing emerged that will stop us lifting the lockdown and restrictions here in the UK, so we'll continue with that plan, but there's no doubt that we're lucky that that's the case here. It's possible that that situation could be undermined by a variant, and it's possible we'd need to put measures in place to combat that, as well as re-starting the vaccine program with an updated vaccine, should the worst case occur.

No-one wants to see that happen, and hopefully it won't happen, but it is possible, so if you're going to go looking for people watchful of that possibility, and talking about what would need to be done in response, then you're going to find them.

Or maybe it was down to the fact that from March-September all education was shut, from september onwards millions of kids and students were mixing together, the vast majority of them asymptomatic and they were spreading it like wildfire back to their families. Suddenly in October onwards there is a massive surge with another lockdown in November. Or it might just be an amazing coincidence.

Like I said, at the time, that's what it was easy for people to put it down to, and of course the lockdown easing contributed to how far and fast it spread, but there's more than enough worldwide data now that's there's no doubt it's far more transmissible, hence it becoming the dominant variant in so many different places.

Interestingly it was reported by this boards favourite newspaper along the lines of my view on it....

Fears grow student Covid infections will spread into local areas in England and Wales | Universities | The Guardian

Martyn Moss, the University and College Union (UCU) north-west England regional official, said student areas in Manchester, such as Fallowfield, were reporting soaring rates of infection. He added: “We are in a nightmare situation where large numbers of asymptomatic people may be spreading the virus to higher risk groups in the local community.”

I also like the ones How the Chinese invented a virus to bring down the west, yet unbeknown to them a western multi billionaire, former owner of the worlds largest software company Had invented a vaccine with a microchip in it to control everyone Which he delayed releasing until the virus was out of control.
