Today I’ve kept having a feeling of dread and tenseness and wondering why, then I remember the match is on tonight.

I'm usually on the optimistic side, but I'd be glad just to escape Anfield without a complete drubbing. If I had an ounce of sense I wouldn't watch it. But when did sense ever come into being a Saints fan? 😂

Liverpool 7-8 Saints

Possible, if there are 50+ penalties and the Liverpool players have all done swapsies with their boots. I'm optimistic though.

Personally, I don't want to see Bazunu, Harwood-Bellis, Stephens and Downs anywhere near the first XI.  I'm tempted to include Manning and the RB as well, but not sure about their replacements.

I would urge Still to leave the scars on the bench. We all know though that Cap’t Calamity will be first on the team sheet swiftly followed by Manning and AA.

Knowing us, we'll win this one then lose to Middlesbrough on Saturday when Still brings back all the 'traumatised' players that didn't start tonight... #thesouthamptonway

I don't know what to say really.
One hour and a quarter
to the biggest battle of our professional lives
all comes down to today.
Either
we heal
as a team
or we are going to crumble.
Inch by inch
play by play
till we're finished.
We are in hell right now, gentlemen
believe me
and
we can stay here
and get the shit kicked out of us
or
we can fight our way
back into the light.
We can climb out of hell.
One inch, at a time.

Now I can't do it for you.
I'm too old.
I look around and I see these young faces
and I think
I mean
I made every wrong choice a middle age man could make.
I uh....
I pissed away all my money
believe it or not.
I chased off
anyone who has ever loved me.
And lately,
I can't even stand the face I see in the mirror.

You know when you get old in life
things get taken from you.
That's, that's part of life.
But,
you only learn that when you start losing stuff.
You find out that life is just a game of inches.
So is football.
Because in either game
life or football
the margin for error is so small.
I mean
one half step too late or to early
you don't quite make it.
One half second too slow or too fast
and you don't quite catch it.
The inches we need are everywhere around us.
They are in ever break of the game
every minute, every second.

On this team, we fight for that inch
On this team, we tear ourselves, and everyone around us
to pieces for that inch.
We CLAW with our finger nails for that inch.
Cause we know
when we add up all those inches
that's going to make the fucking difference
between WINNING and LOSING
between LIVING and DYING.

I'll tell you this
in any fight
it is the guy who is willing to die
who is going to win that inch.
And I know
if I am going to have any life anymore
it is because, I am still willing to fight, and die for that inch
because that is what LIVING is.
The six inches in front of your face.

Now I can't make you do it.
You gotta look at the guy next to you.
Look into his eyes.
Now I think you are going to see a guy who will go that inch with you.
You are going to see a guy
who will sacrifice himself for this team
because he knows when it comes down to it,
you are gonna do the same thing for him.

That's a team, gentlemen
and either we heal now, as a team,
or we will die as individuals.
That's football guys.
That's all it is.
Now, whattaya gonna do?

Manning aside, I actually think that’s a reasonable teamsheet. Robinson should be getting more time really, but I guess they don’t want the World seeing he’s our best player.

Good to see Leo and Jelert start. Quarshie and Flynn back too. Why aren't Jay Robinson Stewart and Matsuki all starting? COYR 😊

Robinson's still traumatised by being dropped and Matski's been drummed out for scoring a great goal.

A return to the 5 at the back system that has served us so well. Joy.

Four at the back has averaged us 0.5 points per game

Feel free to speak your mind. Don't be shy about sitting on the fence.

I was just thinking that. If anything we've looked better in a 5.

The back 4 has been worse, and people have been calling for Stephens and THB to be replaced and they have been.

We'll get smashed whatever team we put out, and I'd rather we tried a different combo at the back in a game that doesn't matter.

It's midfield that bothers me more.

I'm begining to realise that Will Still is full of shit. His pre match statement says "I just want to show them what we're all about". The fans don't know so how does he intend showing them?

Looking clueless and lacking ideas are the only things I could say we're about?

Also, it's a team with about 6 changes. Nobody has seen this 11 start a game so how on earth is he going to show them what we're all about?

If it were an established 11 that had been picking up points then fair enough but I'm struggling to understand how he's going to show anyone what were all about when I don't think he knows himself. 😂

We really could do with some points from this one.

It was a flippant comment. But in any case I much prefer the notion of 4 at the back. Especially if we listen to Still who says that he wants to play wingers, not sure how we do that effectively with wing backs as well. I don’t like the idea of 5 at the back, especially with the players we have doing it.

This game was always a free hit and it’s good to get some game time into the squad. I just thought Still might choose to do it within his so-called preferred system, rather than reverting to something he referred to as a stop gap until we bought players to play the system he wants.

He’s on to a hiding whatever he does let’s face it. At least he gets to allow players that don’t usually get a look in, well, have a look in and show him they’ve got something to offer. In some respects if this team show more intent going forward the result is immaterial.

I was busy at the weekend and didn't follow the game and I certainly didn't come on here to depress myself more, but yesterday I watched the 8 minutes of highlights on the OS. What utterly appalling defending from our two more experienced CBs, such basic goals to concede. None of the other defenders covered themselves in glory either. But it doesn't surprise me not to see them playing tonight.

Off down the pub in half an hour, and they usually have the sound down, which is a relief as I won't have to listen to the probably nauseating commentators.

Onto a hiding to nothing really. Damned if he makes changes and damned if he doesn’t. I’m hoping that the three centre backs show a bit more urgency than Captain Jack and THB.

Yep, inclined to agree. We spent the first month of the season supposedly not being able to play Still's preferred formation due to not having the requisite personnel, and he then foregoes the opportunity to help bed in said preferred formation in a free hit scenario, as you say.

Even more reason to take every opportunity to try and get it right perhaps, given it's Still's stated preferred system...?

What does Robinson have to do to get picked?

Quite honestly prefer he is on the bench tonight, Liverpool would probs be tapping him up otherwise.

Well it seems to me that he is fed up with senior players making glaring errors and not 'showing what we're about' so has decided to see what some of the fringe players have to offer which is a perfectly sensible approach. What would be gained by continuing with those who have let him down so badly? This is a free hit, we don't expect to win so why not experiment - at least we may learn something.
