Tommy Mulgrew Posted 21 hours ago Posted 21 hours ago (edited) According to Transfermarket, we paid £900,000 for Juan when his market value was £800,000, sold him for £900,000 when his market value was £2,500,000 and now his market value is £12,000,000. Didn't we do well? Anyway, a more Saintsy signing than buying Juan back from Goztepe would be Evan Ferguson, who is 21, and therefore young, hungry and guaranteed to improve, and, more importantly, injured and not expected to play for another month or two or evan three. Veritably, a perfect fit for us. Edited 21 hours ago by Tommy Mulgrew added a y to Saints 1 3
Ex Lion Tamer Posted 20 hours ago Posted 20 hours ago It's possible that Juan was happy in Turkey and wanted to stay there rather than come back to us after his loan

We could have signed Juan directly from São Paulo; €900,000 is a very small sum—São Paulo fans used to mock him, calling him a "catfish." We took a risk and worked on his development for two years, yet he never even set foot in the Southampton facilities. 1

SW5 SAINT Posted 19 hours ago Posted 19 hours ago (edited) Seems to be players we fought tooth and nail to get decent fees for last year are now fetching more than twice as much one year later - Fernandes, Tall Paul and probably Ballard. Waiting for Dibling, Sulemana, Bella Kotcha and Edward’s to go for extraordinary fees…..! Edited 19 hours ago by SW5 SAINT Edit

I’m broadly pro multi club model in theory but I don’t understand the way the Juan deal worked. Sharing players, expertise, networks etc I’m on board with but the Juan deal felt odd. 2

hypochondriac Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Absolutely bizarre that he'd rather be there than here
Saint Matty 76 Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Assumed he was going to go to Scotland which would've been fair enough. Going to a much worse Championship team is really strange though. He must have really taken issue with us delaying the contract talks, which was a fully understandable move from our side. 1
ally_uk Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Fuck him..... Move on from Stewart he is made of glass. Get the next one in. 1
Dman Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago 6 minutes ago, hypochondriac said: Absolutely bizarre that he'd rather be there than here I suspect its more that they're willing to offer more than the 1 year we are. To be fair, I get it from his persepctive, he's probably 1 injury away from being done all together. I would imagine when we left the club a couple of months back, he'd have expected to land a better gig than Swansea. 2

goodymatt Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Well that’s a surprise. Moving further away from home to a lesser team. I hope we have a good replacement lined up and that’s the position we are close to announcing.
saintant Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Reading between the lines I'm not convinced Spors wanted him here and is happy to see him move on.
goodymatt Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Great signing for Swansea btw, Stewart and Vipotnik is decent firepower and they should be able to manage his mins appropriately. 1
Themotherfunky Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Do we reckon Ross was one of the players supposedly livid after the verdict came through? Doesn't make sense that he'd be choosing to go elsewhere if that wasn't the case..

He probably didn't realise he'd have to take such a large pay cut to join a Scottish team and had burnt his bridges with us a bit...! Now watch us sign someone who's never been injured and does his ACL in the first match. 1

He seemed very keen to stay on all the club videos around the fa cup semi. We had a clause, it was no longer valid. He’s going where the longer contract is due to his fitness challenges. No player is choosing Swansea over Saints for any other reason at this moment in time. Game of chicken won or lost here? 1

HarvSFC Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Not saying it now just because, as I've been against signing Stewart back up all summer. Always said he's a good player and if he could stay fit he'd be a 20 goal Championship striker. However, the issue lies in that he can't stay fit. Signing Stewart again would leave us with just Larin as our only physical option up front for weeks on end next season and would be very reliant on Larin remaining fit, as Stewart picks up a lot of knocks throughout the season, even in the last one. Stewart bagged 9 league goals over 3 years. If he was fit he'd have got more, but he wasn't and didn't. Larin scored 8 in 16 games. Stewart's best league scoring season was last season, where he bagged 8, which again Larin equalled in 16 games. Now, depending on us not signing another Damion Downs then Stewart's goal return is very replaceable. You just have to trust that the scouting department, who have done well recently are capable of finding another striker who can bag 8 goals, or more next season. 4

And the fact he’s 30 or coming up for, so his injury history will likely get worse than better.
hypochondriac Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago I'm fine with him not coming here. The issue is we will now need to spend some proper money in a position that we could have sorted for no transfer outlay. It's also a risk getting in an unknown. We can't afford another damion downs and it's really important we get someone in who can perform at least reasonably in this league. 2
revolution saint Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago Shame, I'd have taken him back. He's a very good goal scorer at this level, knows the club and how we want to play and back end of last season showed that you probably can manage his minutes and keep him fit. Plus he would have been cheaper than getting someone else in. I get the worry about injury but I'd probably have taken it over the risk we sign another BBD, Downs, Mara or Archer (and yeah, I know they weren't all signed under Spors). Hopefully we can get someone decent in. Wasn't particularly impressed by the link with the Spanish lad on loan to Ipswich last season.
SouthWalesSaints Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago Personally I’d have offered him a two year deal, think we’ll regret this one. Him and Larin were great for one another. On multiple occasions one would be having a bad game and the other would have an impact from bench. Genuinely upset he’s not back. Hope we have something better lined up. 5

Hope we have something better lined up. Same. He’s top quality for the Championship and would have been a free. Not overly confident as SR have had a huge blind spot for strikers. Unless we are going after a proven striker in this league like Vipotnik then it’ll be a gamble. The Ipswich loanee sounded promising but if we are serious about promotion we need better. I worried the Stewart deal was off when Tonda started talking up the possibility of BBD staying.
Oh no Mick Mills Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago We were the best team in the Championship from January onwards. He played his part in this with the rotation partnership with Larin Including goals against Arsenal and Fulham in the cup. He'll be hard to replace..we might well regret not getting him back 5

Larin is great but we need someone who will get us 20/25 to be able to compete. Not necessarily. Our goals last season were largely spread across the whole team and if we keep Scienza, Azaz, Matsuki and now we've added Dobbin I don't see why they can't be spread across the whole team again - and we would have gone up last season if it hadn't been for Still and Spygate. Larin will get more with a full season too. A second striker that will score 10-15 would do but it's not the end of the world if they don't, as long as someone else is scoring.
Saint86 Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago 1 minute ago, Lighthouse said: He isn’t coming here and we can’t afford him. Perhaps, but you seem overly negative this summer - I wouldn't be so quick to rule out any big signings. I.e., last year we took azaz and fellows (key players) from established championship clubs... We will likely be selling Charles for £25M+, potentially losing some of THB, Scienza, or Jander for big money, and almost certainly seeing the backs of the likes of BBD, Archer, Ramsdale, Bazunu etc. we've also had the Fernandes money come in, as well as seeing the likes of macca and aribo off the wage bill 🤷. 1
