AI (yeah, I know) has predicted them getting a respectable points tally. I'd say they would be happy with 24 points.

Incredible, would be a massive fall from grace for Ipswich to get more points than Sunderland!!

Ipswich are the 4th biggest spenders in the league over the summer. Not that it guarantees results of course, but they're certainly backing the new manager.

Newcastle are going to be considerably lower than 6th this season.

With Oyekunle out on loan and if we get rid of BBD, Archer and Downs (big ifs I know) then surely we have to go for someone else. We can't possibly have just this new bloke and Larin.

I think Dobbin will be seen as the utility player all across the front 4 positions (or certainly 3 of them) tbh.

Not with Nuno in charge.

He’ll end up somewhere else with a week or so left.

Depends if he wants to see out his contract on mega money

Bragg has been offered a new contract.

Blackburn want BBD. We want to sell but they can’t afford what we’re after at present (only a few million) so pushing for loan with option to buy.

Edozie has interest from Rennes, Cardiff and a couple of Dutch teams.

Obviously a big caveat of Spors generally being decent with recruitment and making a few people - including me -look a bit silly last year. That approach doesn't exactly scream gunning for automatic promotion to me.

His primary position is as a striker.

Does he have previous success playing as the focal point lone striker in our system? Because the Preston fans I saw suggested otherwise.

That is something we need. Stewart was very good in rotating that with Larin. No drop in quality there.

I think that this man city bloke and Larin are a solid pair of options but if you really want automatics we need something more as well as keeping Jander, THB and Scienza.

I believe we also need more goals from around the pitch.

Leo, whilst brilliant does miss a few, and he faded towards the end of the season. Azaz contributes but Fellows was non-existent.

Charles added a few massive moments that will require someone else to step up.

Lets home a setting Fellows and co can chip in more goals/assists

Dobbin should be good for a few goals

Yes I agree we need a really good Charles replacement. If you want to really say confidently that we are at least as good as last year then we will have to keep archer or get a replacement as well.

Good idea. What's Blackburn's target fund for them to take him off our hands?

Not that I know of. At youth level he mostly played in the 10 position with Ellis Simms ahead of him as the target man, and I know that's his preferred position.

He might well be capable of doing a job in that role if called upon, but we shouldn't be relying on that as an option IMO.

JWP - it’s time?

I get that we don't have pots of cash available for transfers but the next few weeks will tell us how serious the club is about going all out for an automatic spot. With a 4 point deficit it's going to be a stretch and we do need a decent striker to share the load with Larin plus a good replacement for Charles if we really want to go for it (assuming THB, Leo, and Jander stay).

Regards the striker I think the lad on loan from City would be a good addition to the squad but, as others have said, we probably need another front man with some experience and a good track record at this level after losing Stewart.

Not sure he scores enough but I wouldn't say no.

Given he was known for poacher type goals plus his undoubted free-kick skills, you’d have to say he represents a decent Charles replacement for a season. If we don’t make it happen now it never will, but I’m easy either way tbh.

The Saudi takeover of Derby seems to gave fallen through. Not sure if that helps or hinders any potential move for BBD. Funds will be more limited, so BBD maybe a realistic target when perhaps they would have aimed higher.

That's where I'm at. Assuming West ham are happy for it, it would be a cost effective thing to do presumably on a free and he would have a fair chance of replicating some of those moments like Charles did plus he cares for the club. I'm not sure it's going to happen but if it did I wouldn't be sad

Arthur Dennis sounds like a proper old school footballer. I expect to see him smoking a cigarette at half time.

Shame we couldn’t get him in the same squad as Ronnie Edwards.

Definitely sound as if from a different era.

I would be astonished if we get another striker who is a genuine starter in the mould of Larin and Mubama.  Think the plan will be to shift BBD, entertain bids for Archer but in all likelihood go with him as the different striker option.

From what Alfie House said, Scienza last season was an over budget punt but one that worked out well. So we’d really have to be getting rid of quite a few players before bringing new in IMO. At the moment we’ve still got players onboard who were out last season and this term who likely won’t get a look in: Downs, Suga, Ramsdale, BBD, Baz etc., we kind of need to see how those lot get out and funded (if at all) before we can spend anything much.

But up front it definitely seems like Mubama is earmarked for the Stewart role.

It makes promising viewing but is he still looking like another Antonio ?   Good signing if he is and lives up to it.

We need 3 strikers IMO, even though we play one up front. Going into a long season with just 2 would be foolhardy. Ultimately it could be we can't shift one of BBD, Downs or Archer so they'll be the third but if we can shift them all, I'd want a third. And thats even knowing Dobbin can play there if needed.

Just loaned out Oyekunle too, our youth striker most likely to step up.

Archer will be number three, as it was last season. If we sell Archer then yes there’s scope but I don’t see that happening in terms we’d be agreeable with.

Good. In that case I'm reasonably satisfied if a tiny bit underwhelmed. Remains to be seen if this new bloke is a better option than Stewart. Maybe in terms of availability he will be. It's important for me that we keep archer or bring someone else as good in if he's sold.

Alan Ball was well past his best when he joined us but helped the team massively to get to Div 1 in 1978

That said I do not think we need JWP but we need a decent striker not a young kid from Man City

I think Ball was only 31 on joining us. Although past the prime of his career he had some years ahead of him, and a fantastic football brain to make up for his ‘older’ legs. Not many players of his calibre would drop a division now.

Agree with your  points though.

In agreement with Blackmore re needing another proven option. Larin and a relatively untried youngster is a high risk if we’re seriously going for automatic promotion.

Since then he has had a season in the Championship and is the 1st choice striker for England under 21s

He scored 11 goals per season in the last two seasons he played for us, so not too shabby for a midfielder not known for his attacking prowess*

(* Yes, most of those were probably set pieces, and yes, he was 4 - 5 years younger)
