He was successful last year in this league as opposed to Downs and Quarshie who were not. He's also been played out wide which Preston fans told us was where he goes missing. Where I agree with you is that if we get to the end of the window and have lost a couple more key players and replaced with cheaper and slightly less good alternatives, I would argue that 9 million pounds is a fairly large amount that may have been better spent strengthening weaker areas of the time than stocking us with two players who are must comfortable in attacking midfield. Hadn't realised how well he did for Preston. Yeah Still think prioritising 9m spending there then vs cm was odd. 1

It depends. Maybe we will get a top cm in as well and Dobbin is more of a cherry on top. My concern at the moment though is that we will need to sell more in order to bring in more reinforcements of good enough quality.

Chez Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago 1 hour ago, Midfield_General said: He'd definitely be a better fit, but even with CL I'm not sure Celtic are paying anyone £100k+ p/w any time soon. Robbie Keane is their top ever earner I think, and he was on £65k (though admittedly a few years ago now) Though if its getting near deadline day and we're getting desperate to get him off the books, you could maybe see a loan with us covering some of the wage. Agree, they aren't paying that. The question is, are we paying him that having been relegated? Did his contract include the usual relegation wage reduction (40% is often mentioned) or not? You assume so, but it's hard to know for sure. If it was reduced, then you are getting closer to that Robbie Keane weekly wage amount. Obviously last time we got a £4m loan fee and that adds another £75k a week to their outlay. But to bring a keeper in they are going to have to spend some money, so its more a a decision about how they spend. Feels a great fit in terms of club and player character 1
CSA96 Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago (edited) I’m not worried about the CM situation and don’t understand why some are pitching replacing Charles and buying Dobbin as an either/or scenario The club have been very, very clear all summer that the plan for the summer was to sign Dobbin (one of the best for G/A last season) to give us another option in the area behind the striker and then replace any of the genuine first team contributors if they go, while needing to bring in some money via sales to plug the gap as our financial support decreases and we continue to eliminate the Covid loan Charles will get replaced appropriately. No part of me thinks the midfielder money has been spent on Dobbin and it’s an either/or scenario As recently as Friday, the manager himself confirmed they will replace Charles with a new signing rather than an internal solution and we’ve also had the owner speaking publicly to say the same. Alfie House has said a matter of hours ago that it’s the top priority for Johannes Spors. Can only presume that people are just getting restless for a transfer fix because the league games have started and the end of the window is coming into sight Edited 5 hours ago by CSA96 6

Can only presume that people are just getting restless for a transfer fix because the league games have started and the end of the window is coming into sight I haven't seen anyone suggest that. A number of people have suggested that we only have a set amount of money in order to spend to improve the team this summer. If the amount we have to spend is smaller than some people imagined, then perhaps 9 million may be an awful lot to spend on one player to rotate with Azaz rather than perhaps a guaranteed starter where we are weaker in other areas and maybe a slightly cheaper Azaz alternative. No one has ever suggested that we wouldn't replace Charles when he left.

Also allowing them a pre-season. Do we start every season slowly because we're cursed, play minnows in pre-season, or does leaving transfers until the last minute every year play some impact? Starting the first two Premier League games with Alex McCarthy between the sticks certainly didn't help us get off to a good start. All 3 of the above - certainly that the case so far this season. Pre-season started too late and was too short. Plus we played too few friendly games against teams that were too weak We needed to hit the ground running this season with the -4 points so really needed to bring the key signings in early. But we always seem to start badly anyway - so we are a bit cursed. I think the whole club was focused on Spygate over the summer - and whether or not Eckert was going to get suspended and resign or got sacked. Everything else kinda got put on hold or delayed. Or that is what it looks like right now. Personally I think we should have sacked him and moved on - Danny Rohl would have been a good alternative for example. Or even Thomas Frank. I think we will have a slow start to the season - due to late signings and the half-arsed pre-season. But I also think the team will be weaker overall than last season at the end of the transfer window. Right now we don't really have any squad depth in key positions - if Larin gets injured we are going to struggle up front. I think we will just about make it into the top 8 and the play-offs - but we wont be good enough to get through the play-offs and get promoted. I don't really get the Dobbin signing - he's not a winger or a number 10 really - he seems to have been a second striker who plays of a big man in a 2 up front or a centre forward who plays with a second striker. Preston seem to have played 2 upfront last season (3-5-2 for the most part) which is not the way we have played. Hopefully he's not cover for Azaz at number 10 - or cover for Scienza at left wing. But then I don't really see where he plays. 1

Signings will be calculations and spending more in one area will necessarily mean that we commit less elsewhere (maybe why Mubama has come in on loan for example -not that that is necessarily a bad thing.) this is all speculation at the moment and maybe we will do what we did last year and go on a signing flurry at the conclusion of the window, I just have some concern about getting players to gel sufficiently when the season has already started and we have a 4 point deficit to make up. Win well on Saturday and this will seem less consequential I am sure.

Wolves are getting going on business now, Burnley have been focused on outgoings and will surely move onto incomings any time now, West Ham are getting busier with AWB to Villa and Piroe coming in (both on loans), Boro are trying to bed in about 7 new players (I think?) and we'll be trying to settle in maybe two, or three perhaps Personally I just hate the window being open once the league games have started but nature of the beast and can't ever see all of the different parties getting round a table and sorting out a convenient alternative that works for all. Until then it's always going to be until after the September international breaks that team lineups actually start to settle down 1

Doesn't think we will do anything in defence unless THB leaves.

On top of that Boro have gone about their transfer business very well and the other usual suspects are stronger. We don't have a bad team but we have only really signed Dobbin and Mubaba to last season's squad and lost Shea and Stewart. We're almost standing still by other team's standards. I still expect a flurry of activity late on in the window though, there's only so long we can go with 3 CMs anyway for a start. 2

We did bloody well to get players out the door last summer (god knows how much of their wages we were paying), but if we somehow now get £6m after all of that I'd be amazed.
