It is often forgotten now. But United away were a real menace in the late 70s. Southampton was under siege when we played them at the Dell in the FA Cup. And there was the classic time when they swarmed all over Carrow Road, one United fan fell through the roof and an old lady stuck the boot in as he was lying on the ground

They were among the worst in the 70s, and their behaviour set a bit of a benchmark for others (Chelsea for example) to aim for.

They’d always come to games in droves, I remember masses of the bastards c72, and then there was our relegation match in 1974, which fortunately was a ticket match (not that a regular feature then). The first pitch invasion I recall in the national news was after they were relegated in their Man City match that season.

1975 I think they clinched promotion at The Dell which led to a pitch invasion after the game, and vaguely recall them collapsing the goal at the Archers Road end.

Made 1976 all the sweeter. But the following season as you say was potential carnage.

Arteta having a harsh word at Dowman after his late sending off.

Arteta said it was due to something they had talked about before the game. I'm reading into that, that it was that they would take heavy tackles but to watch their discipline. Dowman had been sent off in another game, I think England u-21s.

According to the paper, Arteta had told Dowman to watch Harrison Neal who was known for winding opposition players up. Dowman fell for Neal's tactics and off he went. A lipreader says Arteta is saying to him "Get to the dressing room", much as you might tell your kids to get to their bedroom. A lesson learned for Dowman. The red card appeal has been refused.

Dowman suspended for 3 games. And grounded for a month by Arteta with no playstation. 🙂

There is conflicting information on the ticket website about Boro eligibility.

Website suggests that it is on general sale today for supporters with purchase history.

I have at least one friend that I know meets the criteria but when I look at the selection it shows greyed out.  I notice it does show "Membership Priority" though.

I'm a bit lost to why I can't do it.

Feels like theyve made it more complicated than needs to be, do you have a game purchased from this season?

Friday 30th October - First general sale window. To purchase tickets during this initial general sale window, supporters must meet all of the following criteria:

- Have a previous purchase history, purchasing at least one competitive Southampton FC Men's First Team match between the 2020/21 season and 2025/26 seasons

- Purchased one or more competitive Southampton FC Men's First Team matches in the 2026/27 season.

Friday 6th November - Supporters with a previous purchase history, purchasing at least one competitive Southampton FC Men's First Team match between the 2020/21 season and 2025/26 seasons can purchase their ticket for this match.

I'm trying to buy three tickets.

One friend meets the above criteria, the other I don't think has any purchase history last season so might not be eligible anyway.  I have a membership.

I should be able to buy a ticket for the one I know to be correct but it seems the system picks me up as a member and only allows me to buy a "Membership" ticket, thus I can't.

Could I buy two tickets assigned to me and use that or is that against terms?

BBD potentially starting up top for Sheff Utd tonight as they have a few injuries. Sky just showed a stat, BBD hasn’t scored in the championship since April 3rd.

Tonight is the night…

Sheffield United doing a good job of sneaking up the League (potentially) but I still don't think they'll bother the play-offs. As long as they beat Hollywood tonight I'll be happy.

Wrexham lose, 2nd defeat in a row for the first time this year - it could be 4 in a row, they have Boro and Wolves next. Though it would be nice if they could get something from both games!

Wrexham really struggling this season. Our two losses so far have come from two very poor sides. Annoying.

Without their opening day win against us, Watford would be in the relegation zone. They were 2 up today and are now losing 3-2. Burnley should pick up so they could be in trouble.

Blackburn terrible, Swansea decent. Wouldn’t have given Stewart a 3 year contract.

Baggies 3-1 up at W Ham. Price made it again, did we sign the wrong player?

How many managers will be sacked on Halloween tonight? Especially those in the PL. Whilst tomorrow is All Saints Day!

I doubt anyone from the club will be speaking to Nuno tonight. He's being ghosted.

It’s been a sh*tter of a weekend for the Hammers TBF. Back to back home defeats, conceding six goals and eight of the other top ten won.

Surprising considering they are supposed to piss the league, with the greatest player to ever grace this level...

Not sure what’s happened behind the scenes at Sunderland this summer but they look terrible watching MOTD.

Coventry’s second goal the ball is lost in midfield and one player just trudges back, no attempt to help defend, no effort, nothing.

Martin unfortunate not to get the win.

Having dropped two seasons in a row the danger was being relegated again this year. The first job was always to stabilise and establish the culture. Only then would his team packed with lightweight attacking midfielders and pals start to show their value. I'm delighted it's happening for him and all the naysayers are eating their words.

Purchased 2 today and surprised just how few there are left. Mainly singles and a few in the chapel wings and blocknext to away fans.

Disagree with Gary Neville whining on about players having to go off and wait on touchline after going down with a head injury. He's obviously forgotten about how teams were regularly using the head injury rule as a means of disrupting the flow of the game. I remember a number of Saints game where it became almost farcical with the opposition clearly using it as a tactic to go down clutching heads after almost every aerial challenge, knowing that would mean the ref had to stop the game. At least the current rule now gives some form of deterrent for teams doing that while also protecting those players who might genuinely be hurt.

Dunno, think Arsenal were pretty comfortable.

Liverpool should have had a pen and probably red card for arse, though.

Chris Sutton on Celtic:-

"They're deficient in every area of the team. This current team are miles off it. Where is the plan, what's the strategy?"

The beeb article goes on:-

"They are still four points clear, but some other stats paint a grim picture for Celtic.

Twenty-four shots to Falkirk's six; nine on target compared to Falkirk's two (their two goals); more than double the possession and almost three times as many touches in the opposition box. Celtic had 14 corners, Falkirk had none."

So, they are top of the league, absolutely hammered Falkirk in the final third, but just couldn't finish. Sutton, in a job for being a bit grumpy, like Hansen and Shearer, but not for much else.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cmvg7d1xl8epo

There's a video clip, in the article above, where Martin O'Neil, with incredible patience, explains to the village idiot masquerading as a hack about squad rotation. He bats away the hack's other questions, and chooses not to humiliate him asking what he means by "patterns of play."

After all the hyperbole in that article and elsewhere, former manager Ian McColl said "It's not a vintage Celtic."

And that would be fair. The club are in a tin pot league, fail on a regular basis in Europe and have found that a fanbase alone doesn't amount to much in the world of TV and Champions League revenues. They, and Rangers have been slipping away for a long time.

Every year they have to be very astute in the transfer market. Their resources are finite, and this season funds were held back because they were paying off instances of child abuse by their, very connected to the club, boy's club.

Like Rangers, they think they are bigger than they are. Absolutely irrelevant outside Scotland.

The hacks think they are in La Liga and that the Daily Record is Marca. They are oblivious to the shortbread tin surrounding everything they report on.
