Surman

Another few weeks time bought, or another few quid off the asking price. No grat worry about this. Would be nice to think there's a sell on clause in the last couple of deals (DMG & Surman) but beggars can't be choosers

Good luck to him but had a strange old time since Burley left. Played as LB under Pearson, though thought he was excellent with Cork in the first half of last season. Then tailed off spectacularly - christ, those sitters against Derby and QPR still haunt me. Wolves are describing him as a winger! Don't think he has the pace for the prem.

Sad to see him go, Surman was a good professional and a Southampton fan, his form let him down a bit last season but I'm sure he'd have been a vital part of the team this season... had he stayed.

I think he'll struggle in the prem, and is going to wolves purely as a squad player. I'd be surprised if he started more than 10 games, all the same... best of luck to him.... we need the money

The Echo believes it's £1.2m initially, rising to a possible £2m.

Not bad considering he has not looked as good as he did IMO after the arrival of Pearson who seemed to single him out as partly the reason for our form at the time and playing him at LB. May as well played Idiakez at CB with that logic.

Always good to see local talent do well and I hope Surman starts playing with a bit more confidence and joy as at his best he was a good player for us with stacks of potential.

Can anyone guess who is now our longest serving player? (A clue - his last appearance was nearly a year ago & he ended up on loan last season)

Bart and Rasiak both fit the bill on that one. I think Bart just pipped Greg to it when Burley took over 3 1/2 years ago.

How sad.

Rasiak 8th Feb 06 (on loan)

Simon Gillet made his debut as a sub on 28th January 2006, btw. Bialkowski started that game.

I will never forgive him for the two clear goal scoring chances he had in the last couple of games! (F ucking 2 yards from goal on both occasions and still misses!)

He cost us 4 points in my book and possibly the chance of not having a -10 point deduction. Over rated and couldn’t score in a brothel, good riddance!

Genius. He cost us the chance of not having a 10 point deduction ? Damn Surman and his incompetent lawyers...

Lol @ Surman in the premiership, if he plays like he did for us last season then he'll become the laughing stock of the league.

Nice to see he still has Saints in his heart so soon after leaving too, or not: http://www.wolves.co.uk/page/News/0,,10307~1709294,00.html

Only concerned about having relegation on his CV!

Saints fan? Bet he doesn't donate his signing on fee to Saints like Lee Cook did to QPR on his move to Fulham.

Surely Gillet is out longest serving player though? He came up through the youth ranks didn't he? He's been here for years.

Fair play to Surman, he would have got a nice contract and a chance to sit on the bench in the prem. He is a decent player, I think he struggled as he never really established himself in a position, he's too lightweight for centre-mid and lacks the pace of a true winger. Arguably his best form came on the right side of midfield under Burley.

Thanks Andrew for providing the money to keep the club going for a little longer. Strange that some people expect a young player of 22 to be able to play at peak form week in week out - it just aint possible as Theo would concur.

An England Under 21 international, your skills will be better suited in the Prem than Div 1 / Conference or wherever we start next season.

Good luck and thanks for the memories.

Nice lad, just couldn't deliver when we needed, I wish him well.

But it's an amazing bit of business in this climate, and a lot of money to give a vagrant begging in the gutter, cos let's face it, in footballing terms we are a grubby tramp with wee down our trousers...

If Mr Fry has negotiated this he has obviously saved his best work for this week...now he has covered his fee perhaps he could get the sale sorted, at least get us into a hostel, and maybe some shoes.

Admittedly, he was below-par last season, along with a lot of other players.

I can see him proving people wrong and being a success in the Prem.

I'll remember him for the final game of the 07/08 season against Sheff Utd when he played out of his skin and ended up getting mobbed in the pitch invasion after.

Very sad, dont know why people are so down on AS, he's a very good player and i can see him doing very well in the prem

Thanks Drew, you were saints through and through and there isnt much else we can ask of you in such a torrid time for the club (except from not missing those sitter last season!)

McCarthy seems to be making the same mistake he made when Sunderland went up - buying a load of lower league players and hoping.

Think they could have a long tough old season ahead.

Good luck Surman, though. Saints fan and good servant but not quite as good at dead balls as he thought he was.

very dissapointed to see him go and only the fact that I knew he had to leave for both the club and his own career has lessoned the blow from the Bridge-like nightmare.

I think I am more dissapointed at the reaction of the `supporters' on here than anything else.

22 year old Surman has given everything over the last few seasons and all people can point to is a miss against QPR.

Ok so his form came and went but that happens with young players. Mark my words he will be replaced by a much much worse player and in 12 months time you will look back and yearn for the likes of Surman who have terrific first touches and the ability to play in tight spaces.

Who is next?

Erm...James did okay, he could get 200k surely?

Lallana maybe 750k?

Morgan 750k?

Then.....erm.....so that probably gives us 2 months wages at most.

the more players you sell the less wages there are to pay. Getting rid of Rasiak and Saga's wages would make all the difference. As I said at the end of the season Rasiaks £15k a week for 16 weeks before leaving on the last day of the window for nothing is what will hurt us most.
