Graeme Murty On Trial

35 in November. Solid full back, and we need some of them, but a bit bloody slow. Nice balance of experience and youth with James and Murty fighting for that right back berth. Perhaps we need the same sort of older head at left back to complement Mills if we get him (and assuming Molyneux goes).

Should the club be publicising these trialists as others can nip in and get them as we aren't in a position to offer anyone a contract yet?

TBF I wouldn't think other clubs get info on which players are out of contract from Saints OS.

Why can't we be signing someone like Alan Bennett from Reading. He's available since the 25th of June on a FREE. Has nobody told Wotte about the guy. He started badly but became a hero afterwards. Would have stayed had Lowe not refused to pay him.

hold a significant place in the Club's history. Graeme was a fantastic captain and the memories of him lifting the Championship trophy at the end of our promotion season will never be forgotten by any Reading fan." Murty will also be remembered for his charity work while at the club. The club said "He will be known as an ambassador with all of his charity work and work in the local community

voted both Readings best ever RB and their best ever capt

How do you manage to make up this nonsense? Bennett was recalled from loan by Reading who wanted him for the FA Cup. For whatever reason we then didn't try and sign him the following summer, probably due to going for Perry instead.

lloydy in midfield then. would be quality there imo. anyone else agree?

Yes. With luck somebody like him would bring the sort of solidity that Dodd did to the RB slot and James could be the player ahead of him able to push up when able and track back to support if needed.

Christ on a bike, THAT changes my perception of what's going on behind the scenes completely.

I mean, yeah we can't currently offer him a contract due to untakeoverness, but he was Reading's captain when they walked the CCC, he must know the situation and even though he's now 34 (and played for Charlton 8 times last season) he's got to still have something to offer if he's fit.

This bloke was playing Premier League football regularly in 2007/8.

Would be a very good signing for us IMO, especially in League One. Murty has bags of experience and he's a good, solid defender. I'd be delighted if we secured his signature, he's exactly the type of player we need.

One question though. Should we be publicising the fact that we have these players on trial when we aren't in a position to offer them a contract just yet? Other teams may hear about it and try to sign them from right under our noses.

Reading released Marcus Hahnemann, Michael Duberry, Leroy Lita and Alan Bennett as well as Murty this summer. Although Hahnemann's gone to Wolves, we should try and get the rest of them as a job lot.

I suspect that might depend a little bit on whether there's a takeover by people with a wad of cash or not.

They'll all be available on frees and our own wage bill has been cut back substantially. Although we won't offer them silly cash in League 1, we're not far from Reading geographically speaking and there might be some appeal for them in going somewhere where their ex-teammates are also headed. I don't think the wad required is all that big, to be honest - they've all got to make a living so they'll want to sign for someone.

I'll be amazed if Lita drops down to League One.

It also just made me laugh to think that we're all getting excited because we've brought a 34-year-old Reading reject in on trial - talk about having been starved of any sort of positive news for ages

Fair point, but he's recently been a good player with a professional attitude and he's about as good as we're going to get at the moment.

The fact we've even heard of him puts him streets ahead of most people we're going to be linked with anyway.

Hopefully we'll also learn to start handing out 1 or at most 2-season deals to players over 32 as well...
