Minsk Posted 10 August, 2009 Share Posted 10 August, 2009 (edited) If you were given the option, even a few weeks ago, of who you would rather have had leading our line this season would it have been Rickie Lambert or Stern John? For me, it is Rickie all the way and I very much doubt we would have signed him if Stern had stayed. So, thanks for boggin' of to Palace Stern (and I hope your arm heals soon). Clouds, silver linings, and all that!! Edited 10 August, 2009 by Minsk

Saint Fan CaM Posted 10 August, 2009 Share Posted 10 August, 2009 Have to agree - Lambert is much more suited to the teams needs. However, having the two of them in attack would have sealed promotion and prepared well for the CCC also perhaps.

However, having the two of them in attack would have sealed promotion and prepared well for the CCC also perhaps. Only if you are thinking of having Stern as back-up, as I think the two togehter would have meant a definite lack of pace up front. Indeed, I am still hoping that we sign this lad from Luton (or someone else pacey) to play alongside Lambert. Paterson seems like a good prospect, but I don't think we should rely on him for the full season.

Bailey Posted 10 August, 2009 Share Posted 10 August, 2009 Lambert wins hands down. Although they're similar style players, Rickie is younger and has scored more goals at this level. Would have been great if Stern stayed, as these two would have formed a top-draw partnership for League One, but it wasn't to be. Hopefully we can get another striker in to partner RL as I'm pretty sure that Saga and Rasiak will be off soon.

Minsk Posted 10 August, 2009 Author Share Posted 10 August, 2009 bit of a daft question really...is anyone going to say Stern...? I would hope not but there were plenty of people bemoaning the fact he left and, I said above, I seriously doubt we would have signed Lambert with Stern, Rasiak and Saga all on our books. Just pointing out that some seemingly bad things can have a very good end result is all.

Chez Posted 10 August, 2009 Share Posted 10 August, 2009 you all seem to know a great deal about Lambert. I just wonder how good he can be if not a single CCC side were willing to pay a million quid for him. Maybe that says more about the state of the finances of the clubs up there than his ability, but it does make me wonder.

Maybe that says more about the state of the finances of the clubs up there than his ability, but it does make me wonder. I think it may be due to a combination of factors. His age being one - sign him up on a 3 year deal and we're unlikely to get our money back. He lacks pace (by his own admission) and probably isn't going to do much of a job for any CCC side looking to get promoted once they actually get promoted. I'm playing devils advocate here and think he's probably exactly the kind of signing we could have done with when we got relegated from the prem. However, you can see how CCC chairmen would look at it as (probably) money poorly spent. No one would touch Lee Trundle either when he looked a great player a few years ago. Dean Windass should have been signed up by a decent club long before he actually did as well - some players seem to struggle to get a good move even though they deserve one. Lets hope it turns out to be the perfect move for all parties. Lets cross our fingers and hope he avoids injury and quickly gets a couple of chances and he takes them so we don't a Forlan style wait for his first goal. Absolutely and tomorrow could be a great chance in a competition I doubt either side will take that seriously. Looking at the goals lambert scored is really good but the one thing that stands out is how much space the fella is given at this level. He wouldn't get that even in the CCC but fair play to the lad he can certainly hit a shot with power and precision. As pardew said earlier, he's looking at players that will get us out of div 3 and Lambert fits that bill to a T.

Only recently the purse strings where tightened. I read somewhere that Mr Cortese was frustrated at the inabaility we had to bring in players, and thus the money was available. God I love this club. Greenridge Posted 11 August, 2009 Share Posted 11 August, 2009 What else is needed ? unless a Rovers fan comes on here we can assume that is the basis along with trusting AP's judgement Well SJ scored 20+ in the CC? I'm just playing devils advocate here. On the face of things Lambert looks a cracking buy but looking at some of the comments on here it would seem a lot of SFC fans must have been watching him week in week out? Always appears to be a trend on this forum that when a player leaves he is absolutely sh!te all of a sudden and anyone coming in is the new messiah...I just hope that's the case!
